#

Its usecase is incredibly narrow

pure karma
#

its usecase is when the framerate starts dropping below 30 and your desperate

#

and mobile hardware at all times

#

for efficiency

dire igloo
#

Your CPU doesn't magically calculate the physics faster

jagged snow
#

But the game still only runs at 60fps ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

pure karma
#

at that point i would just play at 60fps so yea if you see it that way then yea its fuckall and useless

jagged snow
#

You have that right ๐Ÿ˜‰

#

If you're at 30fps and desperate you turn down settings/resolution and maybe use upscaling

pure karma
#

i use it on my laptop to just get the extra few frames i can but its not a miracle

jagged snow
#

It still looks wildly unpleasant

pure karma
#

and since the true frame rate is like fucking 5 only inputs on the real frames actually happen

jagged snow
pure karma
#

which is another issue

jagged snow
#

Yeah you're doing a really good job of explaining exactly why that's not the right way to use framegen ๐Ÿ’€

pure karma
jagged snow
#

Not entirely true

#

There are plenty of things you can do to reduce cpu load as well

#

And on a laptop, the less work your gpu is doing the higher your cpu can clock

#

Especially if you're running on battery

pure karma
#

not the case here since it runs minimum clock unless plugged in and running performance mode which them leads to being thermal limited and lower performance in the end

jagged snow
#

Hm?

#

That is not a valid english sentance, my friend.

Which is stop icon.
Two lines is pause.

#

Which is very annoying when Twitch doesn't do Pause for live streams, and still shows that icon.

pure karma
#

thats.... awfull

#

not only can you not rewind anymore but if you pause it doesn't go back to live and stays permanantly delayed until you refresh

twin dew
#

I have several times "paused" in Twitch, and then tried to resume, to just continue playing from current live, instead of the "pause" point.

sand saddle
#

I got a 5.0 sound system ๐Ÿ˜ญ
Bought a reiceiver that needs an active subwoofer but my current one is passive.
Everything audio seems kinda expensive.

pure karma
#

everything tech is expensive other than adapters you dont need ๐Ÿ’€

soft bloom
sand saddle
#

Thatโ€™s not the point rn though. The cheapest Chinese subwoofer amps Iโ€™m looking at are still like 40+ on aliexpress

#

Iโ€™m looking at ones with an RCA connector cuz thatโ€™s what my receiver uses

thin trout
#

they are also a lot more complicated (there are more seperate devices - and the exact position, orientation, volume etc of each device matters a lot)

sand saddle
#

I already had a very old used cheap setup but the receiver gave up

#

Now decided to opt for a more expensive one, aka the cheapest one with hdmi arc so I could use a single remote.
What I failed to notive was the need for an active subwoofer...

#

The previous setup was around โ‚ฌ50, 2008 Samsung, all low end probably.
Now the new receiver cost me โ‚ฌ80... opting for a used active subwoofer or a new subwoofer amp(can't really find used cheap ones) costs like another 50...

#

I enjoy watching TV with my friends every once in a while and the surround makes it a little better.

sand saddle
#

Oo found 2 floor speakers and an active subwoofer for โ‚ฌ50 on facebook. Could probably haggle it to 40.
They both seem superior to the current shit cuz the speakers are 120-50k hz and subwoofer is 28-200hz compared to the current 140-20k hz and 45-160hz

Idk about the speakers but I'd imagine I could hear/feel a difference between 28hz and 45hz.

charred relic

๐Ÿ™‚

#

should work nicely for retro arcade stuffs and pinball

#

Also 200Hz is getting nice, into that good rumbly can feel it in the chest area

pure karma
#

idk i feel like i would hate it

charred relic
#

it's just an adjustment

#

so not used to what most are accustomed to olooking at

#

but it's actually pretty damn useful

pure karma
#

its just one of those things were i feel like id only do if i was desperate on space

charred relic
#

Also depends on what you're doing.. like for me I'll have documents up... pdfs usually

pure karma
#

and even then i have no monitors with standard mounting or that can actually be mounted in diffrent orientations

#

yea i can see a few uses

charred relic
#

so i can fit more than a page on the screen and read it

pure karma
#

short form content/steamer chats and documents lol

charred relic
#

also retro arace machines at a monitor orientation closer to this than wide or 4"3

#

it was wide but on it's side

#

so... technically not on it's side sinjce they were designed for that purpose... but yeah

#

oh for content stuff having one of these would be golden

#

i want to add one to my main rig as a 3rd now just for other shit

pure karma
#

the amount of monitors you need to reliably mutlistream is wild

charred relic
#

i gotta get some mounts first and mount what i have... need to mount a 55" TV to the wall and get an arm for a 34" ultrawide...otherwise I'll never have room for all that

pure karma
#

like even when i tried twitch/youtube for the fun 3 monitors was not in fact enough to monitor every failure point

#

you got both chats both stream home pages(brower) both streaming softwares + primary monitor on whatever game or thing your doing

charred relic
#

I dunno I did ok with just 2 lol

pure karma
#

now if you use the streamlabs version of obs and pay a bunch of money you only need one streaming software but for free you need one per website

#

so i cant even begin to imagine the people streaming on everything at once

charred relic
#

Also used a tablet for macro grids

#

triggers are fun

#

where i need 3 more is when i have a bunch of audio related shit going

#

daw, amp interface, amplitube... the main ones

#

ideally those are all on their own so there's 3 right there lol

#

although with the ultrawide i can manage better with 2 now for sure since i can reasonably get 2 on there it's just not "ideal"

#

this vr shit is getting closer to doing away with the need for physical displays, kinda freaky really

pure karma
#

im at 4 now but i also have 2 computers

#

on the same setup

#

oof the latency of linux+arc+framegen+game streaming is rough

#

its probably over 500MS for sure

#

feels like a second of delay on keyboard inputs honestly

tough owl
#

what you need is a server

pure karma
#

and thats what i made

pure karma
#

or a second of latency at about 40fps... il take the latency

jagged snow
#

at that point I'd get a book ๐Ÿ’€

pure karma
#

but books dont need 3 years of optimising the way you do something

tough owl
#

they do?

#

books aren't written overnight

pure karma
#

i refuse to write a book

tough owl
#

explains a lot

pure karma
#

id rather make a robot to write the book for me but thats expensive and not exactly what i care to do

The hoops you have to jump through for performant JS

db = await SQLite.openDatabaseAsync('issueLog.db');
                const data_res = db.getAllAsync('SELECT * FROM downtime ORDER BY startTime DESC');
                const index_res = db.getFirstAsync('SELECT COUNT(*) - 1 AS new_index FROM downtime WHERE startTime > ? ORDER BY startTime DESC', newTime ?? 0);
const [allData, {new_index}] = await Promise.all([data_res, index_res]); //Run both of these at once
                data.current = allData;
                newIndex.current = new_index;
night girder
#

๐Ÿคจ

jagged snow
#

Yes?

night girder
#

no all good.

#

Read sync. So I was like duh.

jagged snow
#

lol

night girder
#

Is that a function? Or part of a function?

jagged snow
#

Part of one

#

Updates ui from user refresh action

night girder
#

Ok, because the await fucks over your async. Just so you know.

jagged snow
#

Uhh
You mean awaiting the promise.all?

night girder
#

Yeah, if not mistaken. That tells wait for Promise to fullfill. So it stops further execution of code.
Which would result in null I think because that alldata and new_index and they might be still null.

jagged snow
night girder
#

Ah right!

jagged snow
#

Await is basically just a heavily sugared way of polling to see if the result is ready and executing other code in-between

#

And the reason I'm doing it in the slightly convoluted manner I am here is that the sqlite interface I'm using will automatically combine those queries so I start them together and then wait for both to finish before pushing the relevant data to UI

night girder
#

I think I use .then() function with my promise

#

promise.all().then(date -> do something funky)

jagged snow
#

Ahh, yeah

#

That works just as well and is more or less the same thing at the JS engine level

#

I just prefer the async syntax for larger functions that are dedicated to async operations

#

If I need to call one async operation from synchronous code and then trigger a side-effect on its completion I'll use .then()

night girder
jagged snow
#

MDN is the best

night girder
#

The then() method schedules callback functions for the eventual completion of a Promise โ€” either fulfillment or rejection. It is the primitive method of promises: the thenable protocol expects all promise-like objects to expose a then() method, and the catch() and finally() methods both work by invoking the object's then() method.

#

I just like the syntax. It looks and reads clean.

jagged snow
#

Very much so, especially in the right places

languid gulch
#

got a fun one: is there a way to "fake" rescaling a UI in a game that doesn't have it natively?

jagged snow
jagged snow

languid gulch
#

would something like ReShade make it possible?

jagged snow

And there is a community patch for it but even that only works at 1080p

night girder
#

where does the data come from that feeds the UI?

jagged snow
jagged snow
languid gulch
night girder
#

If the MMO supports mods, there should be documentation. If they don't, that means it can be possible. But not in a clean way ๐Ÿ˜›

languid gulch
#

what about not rescaling the UI, but "faking" the UI scaling, so that it'd be like "UI scaling at 1080p, rest of the "action" at 1440p"

languid gulch
night girder
#

If you fake the UI and it has buttons, how does it register mouse clicks?

languid gulch
#

that's kinda what i was wondering

jagged snow
#

Yeah if it's that locked down you may be sol, although it's not something I have much experience with

night girder

You gotta enlarge the actually UI I think, or build a costume one and hack in the interaction.

languid gulch

16GB of RAM for a laptop that is used to browse mainly. Am I crazy?

The old laptop had 8GB ... but I don't feel like that's enough for this day and age, not sure.

thin trout
#

16 is not a lot today

night girder
#

Right?

thin trout
#

the minimum amount of DDR5 for a consumer CPU to get good memory performance is 32GB

night girder
#

Nah, that sounds overkill too ๐Ÿ˜›

#

It's for my mom, all she does is open the browser. And print stuff.

thin trout
#

in terms of capacity, maybe, i am just talking purely about latency/bandwidth and the RAM performance impacting the speed of doing tasks with the CPU.

thin trout
night girder
#

but I was tempted to keep it at 8GB.

#

I opened task manager and saw the 8GB was doing fine ... but then again. W10 and the system has some tricks when it comes to balancing memory.

thin trout
#

Well, depends again how you get there

#

you get 16GB of DDR5 on dual channel by half of the memory chips being missing, and so effectively half of the bank groups, which impacts performance.

You get 8GB by taking that crap memory setup and running 1 channel instead of 2

night girder
#

let me see what W11 recommends itself.

thin trout
#

which starts to have far larger performance impacts even if you are only using 4/8GB of memory

night girder
#

RAM 4 gigabytes (GB) ๐Ÿ˜ (W11 requirements)

thin trout
#

1ghz 1cpu core also required ;D

twin dew

8GB can be used, but might start limiting in few years.

#

And when on most current laptops, the RAM is soldered on, getting enough for the laptops life is important.

8GB is almost certainly enough now.
But might start running out during the laptops normal lifespan.
16GB is very unlikely to start running out before the laptop dies from other causes.

night girder

As you can see in the screenshot, I was on lenovo website. entered both models.

twin dew

night girder
#

And then clicked show difference.

#

And it showed me 0 useful information.

#

Except that the date of announcement are different (duh).

#

and untill right now, I have still no clue what the difference is between those two except they end in VVMB and YGMB.

twin dew
#

So basically same thing, with possible difference in crapware.

#

Or accessories that come with it etc.

#

Or the WLAN chipset might be different exact chip as example, as the page only cares about spec support level for that point.

#

Two last characters are the target country (MB for Belgium it seems).
82R4 is the base type, and that 00VV and 00YG are submodels.

#

But AFAIK any change in the internals, even when equivalent in spec, AFAIK leads to different submodel.
Like SSD model, RAM chips, WLAN chip etc.

#

Or even different quick start guide included in the package.

night girder
#

mhm. Ok. Confusing.

#

I know both are Azerty.

#

Also same price.

#

But that can be coincidence.

twin dew
#

Might for example be different SSDs.
Lenovo has Samsung, WD, SK Hynix SSDs, Kioxia, Micron and UMIS SSDs listed in spare part parts for that model that are 512GB, 2242, with PCIe 4 x4.
And then submodels for STD vs Opal (HW encryption support)

But basically completely interchangeable for most users.

#

But for some enterprise buyers, you must have exact same components.

#

Three different WLAN adapters listed as spares.

#

And as that specific laptop model has 8GB soldered, and then one SODIMM slot, 8GB models are also ok.
As you can add the SODIMM later to upgrade.

#

As that halving of RAM bandwidth doesn't really matter for the usecase.

would a glass of water boil if it's inside a bowl of boiling water on a stove?
https://youtube.com/shorts/xgKNmcBcJjY?si=W0hC6_KztaMWJG_K

I think it's a bit not a full picture.
the same thing she talks abut is sort of happening in the bowl itself, but
steam forms on the very edges of water+metal contact. metal is hotter then 100C on the outside, but directly in contact with water it can't get much hooter then 100C too because that would turn water that is directly in contact with tat section into vapor, taking heat from metal, cooling it down.
So, the thing is that steam tries to quickly escape, and thus penetrates column of water, mixing it up.

but the flaoting glass of water, has glass, that will act as insulator (not saying it's good at it), and thus even if whole bowl is actively boiling, glass will only get to about 100C on the outside, and heat water maybe to the same temperature, but it won't have (much) excess heat to boil water in the glass at large scale.

maybe I am wrong

Hereโ€™s a curious kitchen experiment that challenges our assumptions about boiling. Place a glass of water inside a pot of water, set the whole thing on a burner, and wait. The pot heats up, its water reaches a rolling boil... but the water inside the floating glass? Barely a ripple.

Isnโ€™t water supposed to boil at 100ยฐC? Technically yes, ...

โ–ถ Play video
jagged snow
#

You're basically correct, the boiling actually happens at the boundary layer between the pot and the water. There is no boundary layer above boiling point anywhere in the glass, so it'll stay right at 100c and just slowly release some steam without properly boiling.

karmic socket
#

I have not watched the video, but shouldn't there be a layer where the glass and metal touch each other, where the metal could reach above 100ยฐC ?

#

The glass would then reach above 100ยฐC as well and the water could boil away?

#

The glass is floating in the water

I wish educational content was more nuanced (though this one is actually proomotion of TeamWater with a topic-related example)
Nuance is where research advances science. Before telescopes stars were just dots in the sky, and then someone studied nuances of how they look, nad move, and thus we got the ide a that our planet isn't in center of everything. Atoms where named after a word for indivisible, but then someone was playing with the smallest ones and found some neat nuances that made us question what matter consists of yet again.
Without nuances curiosity dies under pressure of neat models.

In any non-gaming scenario where vram matters, Nvidia tends to win out significantly.
And for gaming, MagicZ already explained that it's rarely beneficial.
On the other hand, the better featureset and longer driver support of 9070xt make it the better pick (assuming equivalent price or lower)

want to know a wild bug?

in Windows sandbox, if you open the search bar, there will be random (and often adult content related) search tearms listed as recent searches.

this has been happening for at least 2 months, thats about what i found online. |

i use Sandbox at work to test some of our software, and almost got into trouble bc of that.

spark walrus

It looks like there is a harddisk attached with a boot sector without OS

twin dew
spark walrus
#

SO when there is a readable boot sector, the message NO OS is skipped

twin dew
#

Meant that that next stage boot loader errors out.

spark walrus
#

Another issue could be USB enumeration

twin dew
#

Most common cause I know for that state is Windows Fast Boot freaking out, where forced shutdown and then poweron helps.
But also marginal RAM or CPU can cause that.

spark walrus
#

If it's a RAM or CPU error, there are lights or a nummeric display on the motherboard displaying this error

If i switch to the previous mobo i was using, i boot just fine into os. Problem with the previous mobo is i cant enter bios settings.

spark walrus
#

IF you run windows 8, 10 or 11, just click restart in Windows while holding your Shift button on the keyboard, a blue screen with several options inluding enter BIOS will come up (Click windows start button, click on the power symbol, Press and hold the left Shift on the keyboard, Click restarrt, hold Shift pressed until windows says , wait a moment or something like that

night girder
#

If it makes a snapshot on shutdown of your system so it can load faster, how can this cause issues.

#

And how can fast boot even work, when it's first time booting up the system ๐Ÿค”

soft bloom
#

So I get this pretty much every morning
PC is not booting, just doing click-clack when I press power button
then I disconnect it from the AC, couple minutes of waiting, and it boots
or just boots on second press after click-clack noise
no idea

night girder
#

So apparantly, on windows shutdown, when fastboot is enable, it takes snapshot of hiberfil.sys. This is your kernel state. And on boot, it skips normal boot steps and just reads the hiberfil.sys and loads kernel in.

spark walrus
#

If you have some weird problems going on on, Holding Left Shift before you click shutdown will empty this file and forces windows to reload completely on next boot. You won;t loose files, settings etc. You just force windows to reload full

[Chairman of Intel Board Frank] Yeary, a former investment banker, had drawn up a plan for Intel to exit from the foundry business entirely earlier this year when acting as interim executive chair. Yeary also explored brokering a sale of the business to Taiwanโ€™s TSMC, the people said, but that effort went nowhere.

Baldur! Lip-Bu Tan is meeting Trump on monday for the 1 billion diner you talked about.

#

And at the same time Craig Barrett, ex intel ceo is saying Intel needs a big injeciton to be saved.

#

40 billion dollars.

#

And he says Apple, Nvidia en Google need to pay that.

#

Large American customers such as Nvidia, Apple and Google need a so-called second source for the production of their most important products, Barrett argues. The availability of such an alternative producer is necessary for reasons such as pricing, geographical (in)stability and securing supply chains. Intel's old x86 chip competitor AMD once became big because it was second source for Intel. This was a condition of the then computer giant IBM, which wanted to spread risks for the supply of x86 processors.
