languid gulch
#

and a big jump up from the 6700

onyx pike
#

Is it the AM5 socket?

languid gulch
#

am4

onyx pike
#

Oh ok, limited future proofing then

#

At least I’d be able to reuse some components lol

languid gulch
#

i haven't checked what ther 7600X is going for

#

$190 amazon

onyx pike
#

118 ain’t bad but it’s worth the extra 70 for AM5

languid gulch
#

and i haven't checked if 1st gen AM5 boards had issues like 1st gen AM4 did

onyx pike
#

Also should I be running dual monitors with my GPU/CPU combo rn? One 4k and one 1440p, both 60hz refresh

languid gulch
#

i know they're supposed to get full AM5 line support in the future, but idk if that's one of those "technically yes, but only if you sacrifice older gen compatibility" like a lot had to do with AM4

twin dew
#

Doesn't really affect things, outside tiny bit more VRAM usage for frame buffers.

twin dew
languid gulch
#

yup

onyx pike
twin dew
#

And 600 and 800 series AM5 boards use exact same size AFAIK.

#

Also exact same chips for the chipsets.

languid gulch
onyx pike
#

Yea I have a small overclock with MSI afterburner and it’s a MSI Armor OC

twin dew
#

The only actual difference between B650 to B850 and X670E to X870E is branding (and mandatory USB4 on the X870E).
Where as the X870E is actually just B650E + mandatory USB4.

onyx pike
onyx pike
languid gulch
#

if they're close enough in price i'd go 850

twin dew
onyx pike
#

Makes sense, I’ll just go with the cheaper model then

languid gulch
#

yea, reviewers have showed that it's mostly a "swap out the numbers on the box" kind of update

onyx pike
#

@languid gulch special price just for you- $200

languid gulch
#

🤣

twin dew
#

Using exact same Promontory 21 chip in all of them.
1x in B650, B650E, B850 and X870.
2x in X670, X670E and X870E.

onyx pike
languid gulch
#

oh it's 100% BS

twin dew
#

Just changes to the requirements for the whole MB to get that specific "chipset" name.

languid gulch
#

rebadging for a new cpu gen

twin dew
#

Where those X870 and X870E require USB4 support.
And B850 doesn't allow for PCIe 4.0 only MBs anymore, while revised B650 allowed.

#

B850 requires at least one PCIe 5.0 x4 M.2 slot.

onyx pike
#

Are they going to make a B1050? That’s be kind of funny considering NVIDEAs naming scheme

twin dew
#

And that skipping of 700-series was just to go tit-for-tat with Intel chipset numbers.

languid gulch
#

oh they cross numbers all the time between the 2

onyx pike
#

Makes sense

onyx pike
#

Though the XT sort of distinguishes (ish)

Makes you wonder if NVIDEA is going to skip the 9090 series tho and head straight to whatever AMD hasn’t used

twin dew
#

But basically on AM5 MBs, you select one that has features you want, and don't care about the "chipset".

languid gulch
#

basically high end X670 = standard X870

onyx pike
#

Like WiFi/bluetooth/M.4 compatibility and USB headers?

twin dew
languid gulch
#

oh crap i forgot about the dual chipset weirdness

twin dew
#

X870 is actually B850E.

pure karma
#

im telling you this 10700F is goated

onyx pike
#

I’ll probably cheap out on the PSU so I can get a better mobo/CPU combo then

twin dew
#

Someone at AMD marketing went wild, and now X870(E) just means it comes with USB4.

pure karma
#

90C peak with no cooler

languid gulch
#

god i hate the alphanumeric number schemes that give no information

pure karma
#

went straight into windows no need to touch anything

twin dew
#

Where X870 is single-chip and X870E is dual-chip.

languid gulch
pure karma
#

no like 3000+

onyx pike
twin dew
#

Where as with B650 vs X670 was about number of chipsets, and E meant that it has both PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot and GPU slot.

languid gulch
#

laptop gamers be like

onyx pike
#

Almost 3mHz right

twin dew
#

While non-E only had one of those two originally, and later revision of B650 non-E dropped the PCIe 5.0 requirement completely.

pure karma
#

i cant log into windows because its locking me out and it has no wifi but yeaaaa

#

i can get to the login 😂

onyx pike
#

I’d likely get one with a 4060 or 4070 laptop GPU and call it a day

onyx pike
twin dew
#

And you can pretty easily check the size of that UEFI/BIOS FLASH chip.
Download update for the MB, and unpack it, the file size is the size of the chip.

onyx pike
#

That would make sense

twin dew
#

Usually 32MB at this time.
The early AM4 MBs had 16MB chips.

onyx pike
#

What’s your opinion on just getting a gaming laptop instead of a PC though? Could theoretically save a lot as they’re going for $800-$1200 rn

#

Would miss out on performance but gain a lot in portability

twin dew
#

You usually would need to spend about double to triple to get same performance.

#

From laptop compared to desktop.

onyx pike
#

Would a system with a laptop 4060 perform better than a desktop 3070?

twin dew
#

For Nvidia, the GPUs with same "number" in laptop are usually about two-thirds to one-third the performance of the same numbered desktop card too.

onyx pike
#

I’m coming from a 1070 so the performance increase will exist regardless

twin dew
#

Today usually closer to that one-third.

onyx pike
onyx pike
twin dew
#

That uses downclocked and power limited 5080 die.

#

Only with more VRAM.

onyx pike
#

Crazy marketing scheme right there

#

Would a 4060 laptop be the best option for price to performance or would you have to go down to a 3060 or lower?

languid gulch
#

i want a 1gb bios chip

onyx pike
languid gulch
#

lol

#

just have one of those stupid M.2 sockets that sticks straight out from the mobo

onyx pike
#

It would be kinda funny lol

twin dew
onyx pike
twin dew
#

And depending on exact laptop, "same" GPU can have wildly different power limits.
For some model it was from 50W to 125W for example.

languid gulch
#

"how to snap your NVMe in one easy step!"

twin dew
#

As in "same" Nvidia GPU.

onyx pike
#

💀

onyx pike
#

At least 33%

languid gulch
#

i wanna see a laptop with a 1000W power brick

onyx pike
twin dew
#

Yeah, in several cases "lower" model with higher power limit is faster than the "higher" model with lower power limit.

onyx pike
languid gulch
#

240W exists, i know that

onyx pike
pure karma
#

mine is 150W 🤷‍♂️

onyx pike
#

Generally speaking at least unless you have a specific model in mind

twin dew
#

Also, lot of laptops don't come with power adapters that allow both CPU and GPU to work at full power at same time.
Often the brick is 20-30% too small for that.

languid gulch
#

yea, laptops are their own special nightmare when it comes to configurations

onyx pike
#

Could buy a bigger brick then

twin dew
#

Haven't checked ever if that would be possible.

onyx pike
onyx pike
#

Just get a bigger brick

languid gulch
#

lol 4 USB-C ports, all power 🤣

twin dew
onyx pike
#

4x 100 watts lmao

#

Just use 4x 100w then it should (not) work

twin dew
#

For the USB-PD.

languid gulch
#

1000W brick, cable that squids into 4x USB-Cs

twin dew
#

And in case they do support, basically it is on one port, not all of the USB-C:s (Apple excepted, and not even them on low end models)

onyx pike
#
languid gulch
#

fuck it, bring back laptops with the C13

onyx pike
languid gulch
#

onyx pike
#

GPU is the entire case, you build inside of its cooling system

#

Alr night yall it’s 1:30 am

#

I gotta get up at 6

twin dew
#

Dell has laptop chargers at least up to 360W.

languid gulch
#

that'd run a respectable desktop tbh

twin dew
#

And because of that much higher cost for same performance, I really don't recommend gaming laptops if desktop is option for the gaming part, and then possibly separate cheap non-gaming laptop if person needs computer outside of home.

#

And then the price for specific exact model can do +-200 price swings on drop of a hat.

The Netherlands justice sysyem: www.rechtspraak.nl/Organisatie-en-contact/Organisatie/Raad-voor-de-rechtspraak/Kwaliteit-van-de-rechtspraak/innovatie-binnen-de-rechtspraak/Paginas/AI-strategie.aspx

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to directly and indirectly influence judicial autonomy. Both the European Union in its AI Regulation and the Council of Europe in CCJE Opinion 26 have explicitly called for measures to ensure that AI does not improperly influence judicial decision-making.

The Judiciary sees a lot of added value in the use of AI in low-risk processes and is therefore focusing on this. This is done in a responsible manner and in line with the core values of the judiciary. Through a 'learning-by-doing' approach, knowledge and skills are built up, both technically, legally and organizationally. This lays a solid foundation for being able to meet the strict requirements for high-risk AI in the future. Until then, the use of AI in high-risk processes will remain excluded, in order to fully guarantee the independence and reliability of the judiciary.

I knew it.

#

3 years ago hehe

charred relic
#

Lawyers here have gotten into hot water for using AI to write court papers that got filed

#

The main issue being inaccuracies and ultiately a human signed off on it so they're on the hook for it

#

So they were using the AI then not even actually reading it for accuracy just signing it and filing it lol

night girder
#

Point is; they investigated it and started to implement AI for low risk porcesses until:

This lays a solid foundation for being able to meet the strict requirements for high-risk AI in the future.

night girder
charred relic
#

WEll the AI itself wouldn't likely be a problem, paralegals and other assistants do that sort of thing anyhow

night girder
#

for example, by automatically **summarizing **statements at B1 language level and education by chatbots in natural language.

That's a low level process they provided as an example.

charred relic
#

Only they're not prone to put in something off the wall ... and either way an attorney should be reading it over before they sign it

night girder
charred relic
#

I've told people for ages AI is going to be a mixed bag

night girder
#

Yup

charred relic
#

and there will be a lot of negative aspects

#

And that ultimately it'll become dangerous

#

we aren't at danger yet... i feel like we're getting close 🙂

night girder
#

Honestly, I was first against AI (way way back). And I still see AI as something that can be harmful for certain areas or aspects of our society; art, music etc. But I also see benefits..

charred relic
#

It's like all tech basically

#

nuclear stuff is a prime example it can be used for extreme good or extreme evil

#

It's just scary that I can generate basic functional code... and i haven't done much int he way of programming in decades

#

and know nothing about C

night girder
#

Don't want to open up an old discussion, but to me art.
Imagine if AI could draw like a real artist in the future, almost flawless.
Now Imagine I need some artwork for my album, I just open a website, maybe pay a fee, put in a prompt and I get artwork.
So I don't need anyone anymore that can draw that stuff for me. One less job 😄

charred relic
#

In that regard I can see it unlocking potential. Somebody with good ideas but can't implement them being able to do both the idea and implementation...

night girder
#

The same with music. Why go through the hazzle of practicing with a band for days, months, years, when a computer can just make music?

#

Certain aspects of our society will just lose jobs.

charred relic
#

Art is more nuanced than code but eventually it won't matter

#

you wouldn't be able to tell just by listening if it was AI or human so... does it even matter

pure karma
#

Get nuked microsoft

night girder
#

And I leave in the middle if that is good or bad. Maybe it's just progress and artists are a thing of the past.

#

Well history will show you

night girder
#

And trying to make a living for it. They see it as a threat for sure.

charred relic
#

technology will always move onward...

night girder
#

You are old enough to know about the Industrial Revolution right?

charred relic
#

at one point people though this or that would do such and such

safe trench
night girder
#

The same skepticism back in those days. Factories replacing people. Machines replacing people etc.

charred relic
#

but we always manage heh

#

I'm almost old enough to have been part of it lol

night girder
safe trench
#

cant tell the difference between kde plasma forks tho

night girder
#

The other problem is, if AI learns art from other AI. Doesn't creativity stagnate?

#

And that will be the case if people stop creating art themselves.

charred relic
#

Maybe maybe not

#

depends on how good the AI's get... and I feel with quantum computing they'll get scary good

night girder
#

Or we have to make sure the AI sometimes does "random" things to be creative lol 😄

charred relic
#

and well... just plain scary 🙂 god i want to see that!

#

Spend my final days watching the machines burn the world!

night girder
#

charred relic

safe trench
#

what do we do if everyone stops using real search results for the ai to base off of?

#

if everyone uses the ai search results*

tough owl
#

adding &udm=14 the end of a google search url you will get web results with no Ai overview

night girder
#

In the future or right now?

safe trench
night girder
#

Right now: we get stupid and bad information.
In the future; if the AI got better. We get better results.

charred relic
#

i think with stuff like artistic stuff the question is just how advanced do you see AI getting

#

An AI could be... creative

night girder
#

The problem with art is different. AI needs "data to train" on. But what if 99% of that data is AI created. You get some sort of circle jerking AI.

charred relic
#

then again i think eventually they'll be sentient so 🙂

safe trench
charred relic
#

well thing is the AI's currently have how many hours of music done by humans as a foundation?

night girder
#

Ah well, I am happy they use it in a legal system because that one is so obvious to me.

charred relic
#

ultilately human music would be the foundation, with anything they did influenced from that

night girder
#

Legal is rational, cold, facts. No emotions. And I think AI might be perfect for it 😄

charred relic
#

just like i have people to influenced me, and people who influenced them... sometimes we share those

night girder
#

and if anyone say emotion are part of the legal system, than I would say that our legal system is flawed and biased.

charred relic
#

only in this case you'll go through some layers of AI but human foundation is alwayts there

night girder
charred relic
#

they might as well 🙂

night girder
#

We can think and hear a song and say; that sounds like AC/DC. Let's do some things different so we pop-out and are differnt (creativity).

#

And atm, I see no way that AI can do that.

charred relic
#

They might do it in a different way

#

not at the moement but eventually

night girder
#

I honestly don't see how because AI is just a trained dog.

charred relic
#

by then we'll be getting close to scarytown

#

can't wait!

#

just wait until they AI can just imrprove themselves

Hey technology aficionados,

I work in the database field and wanting to get my hands on some networking skills. Additionally, I want to set up a network infrastructure that is synonymous to a business. I have the general idea of networking, port forwarding, firewall rules, etc. But I want to get more into it.

I know the general lay of the land is usually the following:

Internet comes in from the modem. The modem feeds into a firewall. The firewall determines if its legitimate. Then the firewall routes to the DNS server. Then the DNS server routes the traffic to the respective machine (either virtual or host).

Was wondering if you have any recommendations equipment.

I have a lenovo thinkcentre that is getting turned into a very simple host for a couple different things, planning to install debian.
It was surplus from an institution near me. I powered it on, and was able to get to bios just fine initially, but it was password locked. I reset cmos by removing the battery, but that didn't clear the password. I decided to try again, but this time using the CMOS reset jumper. Now I get no display output. Beep code is two short on startup, doesn't repeat. Any idea what it might be?

#

It's incredibly refreshing how lightweight linux is compared to windows

#

Idle at 125 MiB of memory is pretty wonderful

twin dew
#

MB firmware cannot decide to use some specific output only.
It is the GPU that decides which outputs are active during boot before drivers are loaded.

#

So either resolution problem, or GPU thing.

twin dew
#

Forgot to reply to this.
There isn't "slow memory controller".
They have that 7 controllers.
6 have 512MB of VRAM.
1 has 1024MB of VRAM.
When doing accesses in the first 3.5GB of VRAM, the accesses are interleaved over all the 7 controllers.
When doing accesses to the last 0.5GB of VRAM, only 1 controller is used, and the 6 others sit idle.
So the bandwidth drops to 1/7th when doing anything with that "extra" 0.5GB of VRAM Nvidia marketing or like decided needed to stuff in there to make the card "4GB VRAM" instead of 3.5GB of VRAM.

#

Same reason why having that 2x16GB + 1x8GB RAM config is bad idea, just only dropping to half the bandwidth, either all the time, or when accessing that last 8GB of RAM, depending on exact memory controller implementation.

But something like 10kWh LiFePO4 pack and smart inverter to charge them with solar panels, or cheap electricty to discharge night or expensive electricity time could work and pay itself in long run, and function as UPS same time

For basic S355 (Fe52) structural steel in sheets I've seen prices vary in range of 0,50€ - 1,10€/kg from 2011 to today. That's huge difference when you use hundreds tons of it.

It's always interesting to see the phrase "container shortage" considering I could go buy 50 of them right now

External antenna to improve workshop internet. Should be 5G link almost directly to west about 2,4km. But no direct visual summer time when birch trees have leaf

#

Maybe build it with higher mast when have more time

twin dew
#

Or the alignment is off right now.
Way too directional antenna for that distance.

#

Getting it pointing at the tower exactly would be real pain.

#

Also is that 90 degrees off from the intended mounting orientation?

#

Which also craps the reception.

#

Those antennas are directional for orientation too.

tribal kraken
#

Its small difference in planes how wide the pattern is in horizontal or vertical, it would be better in the other position

#

Most likely will lift it higher and do compass orientation in winter when the mast is visible

twin dew
#

Different thing from the directionality.

#

Radio signals have polarity.
Horizontal, Vertical, Left-Circular, Right-Circular.
And in this case it is Horizontal or Vertical.

#

And if the antennas are in opposite orientations, that doesn't work properly, as that changes the antenna polarity.

#

So from directionality (how accurately it needs to be pointed at the opposite antenna) it doesn't matter much.
And that is what those graphs show, the directionality.
But for signal polarity you went to the opposite, from max sensitivity to minimum sensitivity, if you turned the antenna 90 degrees from the intended orientation.

#

Upside down (180 degrees) doesn't matter, same as right-side up (0 degrees), but for linear polarity signal, 90 degrees turned is the minimum.

tribal kraken
#

This is my phone at same spot outside

#

Have to look at the rotation when redoing the mount, and try to measure signal strength too

twin dew
#

Yeah, need to actively monitor the SNR in the connected device, as 1-10 degree turn can cause significant effect depending on how directional that yagi is.
For that 3.5GHz 5G, 15 degrees of cuts the signal by 12 dB.

#

Well, 9-12 dB

#

So something like +-5 degrees would probably be acceptable, +-3 degrees near enough perfect, both vertical and horizontal.

#

With that 700MHz in turn allowing for up to 30 degrees off while still losing only 3dB.

feral drift
tribal kraken
#

Yes, for some reason the android app in phone picks another one.

feral drift
#

But for something so distant, having ~60Mbps Down and ~26Mbps Up seems more than enough…

Depending on use case :)

twin dew
#

Because for vertical polarized radiosignal, the EM field oscillates up-and-down.
And if the receiving antenna intended for that is 90 degrees off, it is then set to receive side-to-side horizontal signal instead.

#

And the radio-cross section doing the actual receiving drops way off, so the SNR and sensitivity tank.

#

As the dimensions aren't right for the frequency.

#

Satellite signals usually use those circular polarizations, where the signal rotates as spiral.

feral drift
#

Its a bit more technical for me i must admit..

But wouldnt for most use cases be happy with a vertical and horisontal aligned antenna ?

twin dew
languid gulch
#

just hard line your phone, easy fix

twin dew
#

But basically if you had classic dipole antenna for example, if the antenna wire was between two poles, it would be transmitting horizontal signal.
If antenna was hanging down/upright, it would be transmitting vertical signal.
And with that down/upright, the minimums would be down and up, where there weren't any listeners traditionally.
While with horizontal antenna you would have needed second antenna 90 degrees rotated to get circular coverage on earth surface.

#

And circular polarization wasn't really possibly until pretty recently.

The local ISP had not contacted me back for fiber optic install. Don't know how much digging involved for at this location. Believe there's backbone at the main road ~400 meters away

#

But for now the external antenna works better than the router alone here in steel beam built workshop

twin dew
#

For that distance I would have just gotten omnidirectional outside antenna.
Or even inside antenna set into suitable window.

#

But I need to start playing with 20% phosphoric acid for rust conversion...

Don't remember what will be the new minimum x86 CPU model, as that drop will also include at least some of the Pentiums too, some specific newer instruction that will need to be supported.

#

Ingo Molnar, quoting Linus Torvalds regarding "zero real reason for anybody to waste one second" on 486 support, submitted a patch series to the 6.15 kernel that updates its minimum support features. Those requirements now include TSC (Time Stamp Counter) and CX8 (i.e., "fixed" CMPXCH8B, its own whole thing), features that the 486 lacks (as do some early non-Pentium 586 processors).

Ok, so Intel pentiums are supported, but the some of the various clone manufacturer advanced 486 CPUs that got marketed as 586s are not.

Your graphics card is the component with the highest heat output, probably by a large margin. If you reduce the power (aka heat output) then it will reduce it by that much.

only thing i could say is if it has the same control pannel as mine go in GCC and set it on quiet mode

twin dew

But basically the real solution would be to make the hot air not hit the leg.
By turning the case, or repositioning it, or making some kind of air deflector.

How is a 3070 and 12700 getting hot enough to burn out the rear vent

#

I have a 3080ti and 12700k with my leg right next to the vent and its fine

twin dew
pure karma
#

12700 still pushes 180W and thats if its on spec which it defedently isent

twin dew
#

Also, non-K CPU.

pure karma
#

i learned yesterday that dosent mean crap turns out gigabyte overclocks em anyway

twin dew
#

So boost to 180W for 56 seconds (IIRC), then dropping to 65W.

pure karma
#

idk how, i dont care to know how either, but i know now...

#

i refuse to belive that chip works yet alone hits advertised specs at 65W lol

#

especially considering my 10700F needs 150W to do it

twin dew
pure karma
#

and it has 4 cores less

twin dew
#

So for 12700, P-core Base is 2.1GHz, E-core base is 1.6GHz.
Anything above is "you might get it".

pure karma
#

i still consider the advertised turbo as part of the spec

#

if its not atleast like 100-200MHZ from it its a lie

twin dew
#

Yeah, but it is just "Up To" spec.
And only those Base frequency numbers are guaranteed.

pure karma
#

which are a joke

twin dew
#

Yup.

#

Processor Base Power
The time-averaged power dissipation that the processor is validated to not exceed during manufacturing while executing an Intel-specified high complexity workload at Base Frequency and at the junction temperature as specified in the Datasheet for the SKU segment and configuration.

pure karma
#

i got a over 30% increase in cpu performance by swapping motherboards to no longer be stuck at 65W

#

downside is i lost PL2

twin dew
#

And by spec, for most of the Intel CPUs they can only go over that Base Power for less than minute.

pure karma
#

it held 150W for the full 10 min test... i was impressed but not surprised

#

considering it was hitting over 200W before

#

albeit for 5 seconds

twin dew
#

And IIRC you have K-CPU, which are set to run at the max power all the time, with infinite turbo Tau.

#

For the later ones, like the one you have.

pure karma
#

im talking about my 10700F here

#

its not a k cpu

twin dew
#

Then your MB is set to OC the CPU, which is pretty common setup to set Tau to infinite for all CPUs.

pure karma
#

its on default but intel defaults dosent exist on here so idc

twin dew
#

But AFAIK doesn't happen on B-series chipsets, only Z-series.

pure karma
#

funny story the intel defaults do nothing other than reduce power draw i found out

#

atleast for me everything is still on ulimited just it draws less power

twin dew
pure karma
#

its stopping at 4709MHZ and spec is 4700

twin dew
pure karma
#

yea cause its doing that on PL1

#

not PL2

twin dew
#

And the MB maker OCd the CPU by letting it to stay on the turbo infinitely.

#

Which isn't to the CPU spec.

#

But is a thing that Intel MBs have been doing for very long time, with Intels unofficial approval.

If your PC is outputting 400w and you have very high airflow, you might have a 22c room and like 27c exhaust temp from the case.

With low airflow, that 400w can be more concentrated into say 1/4'th of the air volume, but 4x the delta-T (so at 42c instead of 27c). Exhaust can feel hotter that way.

With fans ramped my exhaust actually cools me down because there's so much airflow, the exhaust temp stays well below the temp of my hands/arm unless there's 500w being dumped into it.

Yes, good drives are worth it.
Where the IronWolf non-Pros are one of the last Ok drives available and IronWolf Pro NTs are high-end for reliability.

dire igloo

All I know is avoid SMR. The rest I'll have to parrot of others

#

Tho iirc there were concerns about Seagate quality stagnating making them fall behind in comparison

twin dew

IronWolf Pro NTs are specced same as high-end enterprise HDDs for the data retention etc. related specs.

dire igloo
#

I tend to ignore official specs unless they auto-disqualify the product

twin dew
#

WD Red Pro:s are 10x worse than non-Pro IronWolf for read error rate spec. (10x10^14 vs 1x10^14), and Pro NTs are 1x10^15.

dire igloo
dire igloo
twin dew

Backblaze has gone to only using actual enterprise drives...
WD UltraStars and Seagate Exos.
Where those Exos drives are NM models...
Both with 1 in 10^15 error rates.

In those WD failure rates are better, but drive ages are very different.
For less than year old, often seagates are lower failure rate.

So for that oldest seagate set, with averate age of 98.6 months (ST8000DM002), they have 9078 drives, and 35 have failed, for 1.52% average failure rate.

languid gulch
#

back when a TV failing might involve a legit explosion 🤣

twin dew

dire igloo
#

Can't find the name of the setting, but it has the options Fast, Superfast, Extreme and most likely off

twin dew
dire igloo
languid gulch
#

OMG

#

twin dew
#

So on that Backblaze data when checked completely, for enterprise drives WD is better for reliability.
But none of their Red serieses are near the spec of their Ultrastar drives.
While Seagate IronWolf Pros are same spec as most of their Exos drives.
And IronWolf non-Pros are higher than best of WD Reds.

languid gulch
#

oh yea it's gone

fresh crane
#

I just buy white-label seagate exos drives for cheap, and have good raid, because drives die.

twin dew
#

If WD upped the quality of their Red series, then those Red Plus and Red Pro might be worth recommending.
Currently Red (without suffix) are SMR, and the two CMR lines have consumer drive specs, not NAS drive specs.

fresh crane

For data read reliability.

fresh crane
#

ok, for write once, then only read, its okay

#

but like, they aren't even cheaper

twin dew
#

Yeah, but archive drives are specific niche.
No place in actual use drives.
And you cannot currently get consumer drives that aren't SMR.
And even that WD "NAS" Red is SMR which is just fucked up.

fresh crane

my machine has 6x 20TB exos X20 in it right now, in a zfs z2
