Is it the AM5 socket?
am4
190 on Newegg
118 ain’t bad but it’s worth the extra 70 for AM5
and i haven't checked if 1st gen AM5 boards had issues like 1st gen AM4 did
Also should I be running dual monitors with my GPU/CPU combo rn? One 4k and one 1440p, both 60hz refresh
i know they're supposed to get full AM5 line support in the future, but idk if that's one of those "technically yes, but only if you sacrifice older gen compatibility" like a lot had to do with AM4
Doesn't really affect things, outside tiny bit more VRAM usage for frame buffers.
Could go for a second gen
That was up to using too small FLASH chips for BIOS.
yup
I ran palworld at native 4k low and got consistent 30 FPS 😅
And 600 and 800 series AM5 boards use exact same size AFAIK.
Also exact same chips for the chipsets.
ngl kinda impressed with that gpu
Yea I have a small overclock with MSI afterburner and it’s a MSI Armor OC
The only actual difference between B650 to B850 and X670E to X870E is branding (and mandatory USB4 on the X870E).
Where as the X870E is actually just B650E + mandatory USB4.
It runs cyberpunk reasonably in 1440p medium settings too (60 FPS)
Would it be worth it just to go with the 850? They are not incredibly more expensive than the 650s
if they're close enough in price i'd go 850
No difference, up to exact MB model, not if it is branded B650 or B850.
Makes sense, I’ll just go with the cheaper model then
yea, reviewers have showed that it's mostly a "swap out the numbers on the box" kind of update
@languid gulch special price just for you- $200
🤣
Kind of a scam but not really lol
Using exact same Promontory 21 chip in all of them.
1x in B650, B650E, B850 and X870.
2x in X670, X670E and X870E.
More just adjusting for inflation
oh it's 100% BS
Just changes to the requirements for the whole MB to get that specific "chipset" name.
rebadging for a new cpu gen
Where those X870 and X870E require USB4 support.
And B850 doesn't allow for PCIe 4.0 only MBs anymore, while revised B650 allowed.
B850 requires at least one PCIe 5.0 x4 M.2 slot.
Are they going to make a B1050? That’s be kind of funny considering NVIDEAs naming scheme
And that skipping of 700-series was just to go tit-for-tat with Intel chipset numbers.
oh they cross numbers all the time between the 2
Makes sense
AMD is joining in with the 9070s
Though the XT sort of distinguishes (ish)
Makes you wonder if NVIDEA is going to skip the 9090 series tho and head straight to whatever AMD hasn’t used
But basically on AM5 MBs, you select one that has features you want, and don't care about the "chipset".
basically high end X670 = standard X870
Like WiFi/bluetooth/M.4 compatibility and USB headers?
No, X670 is dual-chipset, X870 is single-chipset with USB4.
oh crap i forgot about the dual chipset weirdness
X870 is actually B850E.
im telling you this 10700F is goated
I’ll probably cheap out on the PSU so I can get a better mobo/CPU combo then
Someone at AMD marketing went wild, and now X870(E) just means it comes with USB4.
90C peak with no cooler
god i hate the alphanumeric number schemes that give no information
went straight into windows no need to touch anything
Where X870 is single-chip and X870E is dual-chip.
at a whopping 40MHz?
no like 3000+
Did you start gaming on it? You’d see much higher than 90C
well duh
Where as with B650 vs X670 was about number of chipsets, and E meant that it has both PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot and GPU slot.
laptop gamers be like
While non-E only had one of those two originally, and later revision of B650 non-E dropped the PCIe 5.0 requirement completely.
i cant log into windows because its locking me out and it has no wifi but yeaaaa
i can get to the login 😂
I might actually take that route now that I think about it- better portability and I’ll need that in the future
I’d likely get one with a 4060 or 4070 laptop GPU and call it a day
Yeah because your CPU is about to be hotter than the sun itself
And you can pretty easily check the size of that UEFI/BIOS FLASH chip.
Download update for the MB, and unpack it, the file size is the size of the chip.
That would make sense
Usually 32MB at this time.
The early AM4 MBs had 16MB chips.
What’s your opinion on just getting a gaming laptop instead of a PC though? Could theoretically save a lot as they’re going for $800-$1200 rn
Would miss out on performance but gain a lot in portability
You usually would need to spend about double to triple to get same performance.
From laptop compared to desktop.
Would a system with a laptop 4060 perform better than a desktop 3070?
For Nvidia, the GPUs with same "number" in laptop are usually about two-thirds to one-third the performance of the same numbered desktop card too.
I’m coming from a 1070 so the performance increase will exist regardless
Today usually closer to that one-third.
That helps a lot actually thank you
So a 5090 in a laptop is effectively worthless?
Crazy marketing scheme right there
Would a 4060 laptop be the best option for price to performance or would you have to go down to a 3060 or lower?
i want a 1gb bios chip
Just put an M.2 into the chip and it’ll work
lol
just have one of those stupid M.2 sockets that sticks straight out from the mobo
“5080 for 5090 prices” am I right
It would be kinda funny lol
Slower than desktop 5080 because of the lower power limit.
Stick an HDD into the chipset
Yikes even worse then
And depending on exact laptop, "same" GPU can have wildly different power limits.
For some model it was from 50W to 125W for example.
"how to snap your NVMe in one easy step!"
As in "same" Nvidia GPU.
💀
You could almost double the performance right there
At least 33%
i wanna see a laptop with a 1000W power brick
Meanwhile, steam deck MicroSDs
I actually use one for gaming on the go rn
Yeah, in several cases "lower" model with higher power limit is faster than the "higher" model with lower power limit.
Highest I’ve seen is a 130 watt thinkpad
240W exists, i know that
What would the best price to performance laptop be for gaming though?
mine is 150W 🤷♂️
Generally speaking at least unless you have a specific model in mind
Also, lot of laptops don't come with power adapters that allow both CPU and GPU to work at full power at same time.
Often the brick is 20-30% too small for that.
yea, laptops are their own special nightmare when it comes to configurations
Could buy a bigger brick then
Haven't checked ever if that would be possible.
Your mother charges at 15 watts last time I checked, similarly to an EV
USBC standard should help though
Just get a bigger brick
lol 4 USB-C ports, all power 🤣
And support for anything over 100W is pretty abysmal at this time, and lot of laptops don't support it at all.
For the USB-PD.
1000W brick, cable that squids into 4x USB-Cs
And in case they do support, basically it is on one port, not all of the USB-C:s (Apple excepted, and not even them on low end models)
Who wants to start a fire?
fuck it, bring back laptops with the C13
You know what not a bad idea. We need a GPU with it first, though
side to side blow thru ventilation
GPU is the entire case, you build inside of its cooling system
Alr night yall it’s 1:30 am
I gotta get up at 6
Dell has laptop chargers at least up to 360W.
that'd run a respectable desktop tbh
But no idea to this.
And with laptops you really need to buy specific model, not just one with specific CPU and GPU etc.
Because of those giant performance differences between "identical spec" laptops based on part power budgets, actual cooling implementation, etc.
And because of that much higher cost for same performance, I really don't recommend gaming laptops if desktop is option for the gaming part, and then possibly separate cheap non-gaming laptop if person needs computer outside of home.
And then the price for specific exact model can do +-200 price swings on drop of a hat.
anyone has an idea of what can be used for the PCM to store it in a way that allows for more surface area?
I've seen Nighthawk use some kind of soft tube with thermal-activated seems...
but 0 idea how this is caleld (moment when chatgpt didn't help to find)
or any alternatives
theres nothing worst than email codes
there's a bunch of silicon tubes with 1.5cm diameter
for water and food, also polination?
some even armored
The Netherlands justice sysyem: www.rechtspraak.nl/Organisatie-en-contact/Organisatie/Raad-voor-de-rechtspraak/Kwaliteit-van-de-rechtspraak/innovatie-binnen-de-rechtspraak/Paginas/AI-strategie.aspx
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to directly and indirectly influence judicial autonomy. Both the European Union in its AI Regulation and the Council of Europe in CCJE Opinion 26 have explicitly called for measures to ensure that AI does not improperly influence judicial decision-making.
The Judiciary sees a lot of added value in the use of AI in low-risk processes and is therefore focusing on this. This is done in a responsible manner and in line with the core values of the judiciary. Through a 'learning-by-doing' approach, knowledge and skills are built up, both technically, legally and organizationally. This lays a solid foundation for being able to meet the strict requirements for high-risk AI in the future. Until then, the use of AI in high-risk processes will remain excluded, in order to fully guarantee the independence and reliability of the judiciary.
I knew it.
Lawyers here have gotten into hot water for using AI to write court papers that got filed
The main issue being inaccuracies and ultiately a human signed off on it so they're on the hook for it
So they were using the AI then not even actually reading it for accuracy just signing it and filing it lol
Point is; they investigated it and started to implement AI for low risk porcesses until:
This lays a solid foundation for being able to meet the strict requirements for high-risk AI in the future.
Well, that's not allowed if I understand correctly.
WEll the AI itself wouldn't likely be a problem, paralegals and other assistants do that sort of thing anyhow
for example, by automatically **summarizing **statements at B1 language level and education by chatbots in natural language.
That's a low level process they provided as an example.
Only they're not prone to put in something off the wall ... and either way an attorney should be reading it over before they sign it
My point exactly. But I got 💩 on 3 years ago for even suggesting it.
I've told people for ages AI is going to be a mixed bag
Yup
and there will be a lot of negative aspects
And that ultimately it'll become dangerous
we aren't at danger yet... i feel like we're getting close 🙂
Honestly, I was first against AI (way way back). And I still see AI as something that can be harmful for certain areas or aspects of our society; art, music etc. But I also see benefits..
It's like all tech basically
nuclear stuff is a prime example it can be used for extreme good or extreme evil
It's just scary that I can generate basic functional code... and i haven't done much int he way of programming in decades
and know nothing about C
Don't want to open up an old discussion, but to me art.
Imagine if AI could draw like a real artist in the future, almost flawless.
Now Imagine I need some artwork for my album, I just open a website, maybe pay a fee, put in a prompt and I get artwork.
So I don't need anyone anymore that can draw that stuff for me. One less job 😄
In that regard I can see it unlocking potential. Somebody with good ideas but can't implement them being able to do both the idea and implementation...
The same with music. Why go through the hazzle of practicing with a band for days, months, years, when a computer can just make music?
Certain aspects of our society will just lose jobs.
Art is more nuanced than code but eventually it won't matter
you wouldn't be able to tell just by listening if it was AI or human so... does it even matter
Get nuked microsoft
And I leave in the middle if that is good or bad. Maybe it's just progress and artists are a thing of the past.
Send me the login codes next time
Tell that to the people who make music atm. Or spend their life learning to draw.
Well history will show you
And trying to make a living for it. They see it as a threat for sure.
technology will always move onward...
You are old enough to know about the Industrial Revolution right?
at one point people though this or that would do such and such
nice
The same skepticism back in those days. Factories replacing people. Machines replacing people etc.
but in the end, there is plenty of jobs 😄
cant tell the difference between kde plasma forks tho
The other problem is, if AI learns art from other AI. Doesn't creativity stagnate?
And that will be the case if people stop creating art themselves.
Maybe maybe not
depends on how good the AI's get... and I feel with quantum computing they'll get scary good
Or we have to make sure the AI sometimes does "random" things to be creative lol 😄
and well... just plain scary 🙂 god i want to see that!
Spend my final days watching the machines burn the world!
Terminator?
😄
what do we do if everyone stops using real search results for the ai to base off of?
if everyone uses the ai search results*
adding &udm=14 the end of a google search url you will get web results with no Ai overview
In the future or right now?
future
Right now: we get stupid and bad information.
In the future; if the AI got better. We get better results.
i think with stuff like artistic stuff the question is just how advanced do you see AI getting
An AI could be... creative
The problem with art is different. AI needs "data to train" on. But what if 99% of that data is AI created. You get some sort of circle jerking AI.
then again i think eventually they'll be sentient so 🙂
"VEO3 Generate me a video of a skibidi toilet rizzing up livy dun in ohio."
well thing is the AI's currently have how many hours of music done by humans as a foundation?
Ah well, I am happy they use it in a legal system because that one is so obvious to me.
ultilately human music would be the foundation, with anything they did influenced from that
Legal is rational, cold, facts. No emotions. And I think AI might be perfect for it 😄
just like i have people to influenced me, and people who influenced them... sometimes we share those
and if anyone say emotion are part of the legal system, than I would say that our legal system is flawed and biased.
only in this case you'll go through some layers of AI but human foundation is alwayts there
With the difference. We have this thing called creativity.
they might as well 🙂
We can think and hear a song and say; that sounds like AC/DC. Let's do some things different so we pop-out and are differnt (creativity).
And atm, I see no way that AI can do that.
I honestly don't see how because AI is just a trained dog.
by then we'll be getting close to scarytown
can't wait!
just wait until they AI can just imrprove themselves
😄
Less work for us!
if it is can i create a bot that spams this picture on the web and it will take up pictures of this car?
More beach time and tequilas 😄
Imagine being a cyberpunk ripperdoc... and you can just augment yourself
same difference
For sure. if you spam that picture all over the web with the title "goldfish", in a year or two when someone asks for a "goldfish" they get a "cat" picture 🤣
AI generated my modded MC server icon 😄
Although, I am not sure if this is still possible. Because humans at the AI companies help train the AI.
car*
it is not a cat
it is a turbocharged v6 car
Sure a car it is.
somewhere a artist died of starvation because you didn't pay them for a icon 🤣
we 100% did not run out of ideas.
AI ripped that off from other people work you know. In theory
Well realistically some college kid didn't eat lunch because I didn't pay him to make that :/
computex felt like we ran out of ideas
I've found it useful for generating images like logos and banners and such...
Or sith cats...
Eh, I don't want any AI accounts. And the free AI image generators are crap.
Like Darth BawkBawkMeow
If I wasn't a cheap ass I'd pay the money for a month of that new google shit to make videos
i'd end up melting my own brain
lol
is one of them
google needs money, they poor.
brains are useless
yes
We are entering the age of don't believe your own eyes
dude googles promotional stuff for veo3 looks real
that's why i wanna play with it
We entered loooooong ago.
oh the warped things that i could release out of my brain o.O
Photoshop you know.
"photoshop a cat eatiding an abobr."
No? What I said is; we cannot believe our own eyes for a long time already. A lot of camera filters, photoshopping, green screen, plastic surgery etc.
it does 23058235x more than i know how to use anyhow
plastic surgery is always believable after a while
My eyes never trust what they see 🤣
trust me the cat gifs i posted are true
trust me bro..
just the tip
different flavors
xfce does not go well with "premium" devices like macbooks
why did AMD decided on its own it should update driver without my confirmation?..
certified linux attempt 673 moment
hopefully this bazzite install lives for a bit longer than 2 hours before corupting itself beyond recovery....
Hey technology aficionados,
I work in the database field and wanting to get my hands on some networking skills. Additionally, I want to set up a network infrastructure that is synonymous to a business. I have the general idea of networking, port forwarding, firewall rules, etc. But I want to get more into it.
I know the general lay of the land is usually the following:
Internet comes in from the modem. The modem feeds into a firewall. The firewall determines if its legitimate. Then the firewall routes to the DNS server. Then the DNS server routes the traffic to the respective machine (either virtual or host).
Was wondering if you have any recommendations equipment.
well, bazzite has an atomic OS structure, so it should last longer than that
my expectation: it will check, and maybe download
but automatically initialising installation? that also does minor monitor reset (black screen for 10 seconds)?..
it crashed game i had running
atomic = dies on unsafe shutdown, got it
yeah no, DNS doesn't do routing
you might want to look into a small VM enviroment where you set up single-purpose systems for each function and try to make it work
he will find a way
i already have
it died on the very first shutdown after failing to shutdown and loosing to an unsafe shutdown
i dont believe that you didnt do some stupid shit beforehand
this doesnt just happen on its own
in fact it died so hard that using the install usb as a recovery drive lead to OS NOT FOUND
i hope this temp sensor is in Fahrenheit cause 39 degree liquid temp at idle is... not right?
I am impressed by your skills magicz.
You should go into software testing and torture the devs help debugging
seeing how iv spent the past 2 days getting ray tracing + path tracing to run on a gtx card id say id be a perfect fit
Alright y'all, I have an interesting tech struggle
I have a lenovo thinkcentre that is getting turned into a very simple host for a couple different things, planning to install debian.
It was surplus from an institution near me. I powered it on, and was able to get to bios just fine initially, but it was password locked. I reset cmos by removing the battery, but that didn't clear the password. I decided to try again, but this time using the CMOS reset jumper. Now I get no display output. Beep code is two short on startup, doesn't repeat. Any idea what it might be?
Corrupt bios?
Also why didn’t they remove bios password 💀
That’s a crucial step at our school
Yeah, sus.
I don't know lol
They did wipe the drive
maybe they forgot bios had password.
also, I would be a bit surprised that a CMOS reset would clear bios password, because that would be a simple bypass.
If they zeroed the drive that sucks
Rip ssd writes
eh, how many writes is it again?
Official lenovo documentation says it foes if you use the jumper, but either way I won't be able to tell until I get display back
Just gotta boot Debian 🤣
check documentation for two beeps. Like the screenshot I posted, but for your model.
We use parted magic for ssds
And DBAN for spinning rust when we find it
Idk that’s what we’ve also found out to be true
Yeah, I'm a little confused
Manual says clearing cmos should be enough to reset the password
Seems like potentially password did get reset and something else was broken in the process
Okay, new behavior I don't think I've seen before
It beeps when I press enter?
Going to try ram I suppose
I pulled one stick of ram and now I get no post code, just black screen and the beep when I press enter
Congratulations you made an ipad
I'm turning into you
83rd anniversary of the Battle of Midway, quite possibly the wildest "luck of the shitshow" naval battles in history. worth reading about from both the japanese & american perspectives
with japan's info it's a "ok, could have been worse" until everything explodes, with american info it's "we know exactly what they're doing, let's see how badly we can fuck it up and still win"
Well y'all, turns out it was just defaulting to vga 🤦♂️
omg WHY
Honestly im more offended that new GPUs shipped with dvi until like 2021
i have a DVI to HDMI adapter
Yeah apparently the BIOS defaults to vga only
what is this 2004
It's a 2014 machine, to be fair
A touch anemic
But enough for what I need right now
Which is basically an rpi but this is way cheaper
And man, I have to say
It's incredibly refreshing how lightweight linux is compared to windows
Idle at 125 MiB of memory is pretty wonderful
Or you have case where the MB firmware uses low resolution, and the monitor cannot sync to that over HDMI, but can over VGA.
MB firmware cannot decide to use some specific output only.
It is the GPU that decides which outputs are active during boot before drivers are loaded.
So either resolution problem, or GPU thing.
Forgot to reply to this.
There isn't "slow memory controller".
They have that 7 controllers.
6 have 512MB of VRAM.
1 has 1024MB of VRAM.
When doing accesses in the first 3.5GB of VRAM, the accesses are interleaved over all the 7 controllers.
When doing accesses to the last 0.5GB of VRAM, only 1 controller is used, and the 6 others sit idle.
So the bandwidth drops to 1/7th when doing anything with that "extra" 0.5GB of VRAM Nvidia marketing or like decided needed to stuff in there to make the card "4GB VRAM" instead of 3.5GB of VRAM.
Same reason why having that 2x16GB + 1x8GB RAM config is bad idea, just only dropping to half the bandwidth, either all the time, or when accessing that last 8GB of RAM, depending on exact memory controller implementation.

Hope it's going to be as good as RE7
ai proves it's not intelligent
Either that or it isn't alive
While I hesitate to call it 'alive,' Grok is aiming for true neutrality rather than the very right-leaning answers Elon is trying to make it push, so...
is that too political?
It's aiming for an accurate representation.
Elon wants it to be a fact checker in his employ but doesn't realize that he's the one needing to be fact checked.
If grok was trained to imitate a truth social user, it'd become as right leaning as Elmo wants it to be.
There is "neutrality" in AI, an LLM reproduces whatever it's being trained on in the way that its weighting tells it to
And on a tangent about politics and neutrality:
Look up enlightened centrism and false balance
Well does it make AI intelligent if enough people fed it information that the moon is made of cheese, and it would become the standard answer?
From a certain perspective, you could understand that as a misunderstanding or misconception about the world. Pleanty of people think the earth is flat, you know? so, really, if AI becomes like a human at some point, it has to hold some amount of false information as true
Think my point was, AI is only as intelligent as the information its fed..
Meaning for spreading false information / fake news as mister trump would call it - its an amazing tool..
Especially now that being critical about the source of information has become a thing of the past..
Well of course the Earth is flat...
valid point
a spinning ball.. how silly
and yet the only shape physics likes to work with when large masses come into the equation...
Except the universe seems to be flat...
SHRUG
Apparences can be deceptive though... and we have no way to be sure of that.
If I remember correctly, scientists measured it to be very, very slightly hyperbolic
There have been measurements that shows both
But since it's really impssible for us to measure currently who really knows
I thought you just test the rules of space and distance on really really large distances?
like a 2-d person living on a sphere could make an equlateral triangle out of three right angles
but only when it's big enough
Slight nitpick:
AI isn't intelligent, at least not the stuff we're talking about here.
LLMs are built to imitate their training data - that's not intelligence, that's parroting
-# (tho parrots are intelligent but it's not cuz they're copying what they're being shown)
My go-to example of that:

Finally somebody on one of these shows that isn't an idiot. Couple got pinched using fraudulent info to order iphones. Wouldn't answer any questions without an attorney.
More often than not folks march into that interrogation room, pull out their own rope then proceed to hang themselves.
New netflix interface is so terrible I don't want to watch anything anymore. Which idiot approved that shit?
Netflix CEO Greg Peters shares an exclusive preview of the new design and features coming to the streamer’s homepage interface in the next few weeks. Changes include new blurbs for each show, personalized badges to guide viewing choices and upgraded captions. NBC’s Kaylee Hartung reports for TODAY.

Old interface is much better
for customers, yes. for profit margin, no
Not surprised 😅
My sister is sharing her account with me and paying for netflix but this new interface makes me want to call her and ask her to stop paying for this shit
Apparently, people claim netflix copied apple design (don't have apple tv so I can't tell if it's true)
i stopped caring about whether or not one multibillion dollar conglomerate ripped off another. seems like they all just gravitate towards the shittiest, greediest options possible
So came by that website of organisation that provides satellite imagery to rescue as a group of international space agencies
They have quite slow annual report cycle
So latest one is for 2023
And its kind of a record for number of "activations"
Old UPS internal batteries.. 12V 9Ah just slightly deformed. No idea of their age. Guessing around 10 years. My external pack was 6 years
Swapped both internal and external now. 48V 53Ah = 2,5kWh capacity now with Pb AGM batteries. Feel like going to LiFePO4 and diy BMS would not be worth the extra work and cost
But something like 10kWh LiFePO4 pack and smart inverter to charge them with solar panels, or cheap electricty to discharge night or expensive electricity time could work and pay itself in long run, and function as UPS same time
My sister has that similar battery for a wired alarm system
And I had that battery in an old solar outdoor siren which I no longer use
I think those smaller 9Ah batteries are ready to scrap, but those larger 38Ah ones could still work for lawn mover or similar
Going to drop them to my father. Hes retired and probaply finds use for them.
I remember when I found a very old swollen battery for a phone which was 15 years old and immediately panicked like I was holding a grenade lol
Basically, swollen battery = death
There is a store near my home which buys old car batteries, not sure if they buy regular batteries too
Those are AGMs, very close to car lead acid batteries, just in more expensive variant that can be mounted in any orientation.
Basically those are just scrap lead (PB) as used
Now I understand why gypsies here walk around with a megaphone and ask people to give them old car batteries lol
*including scrap metal
i need to get a 12v battery for the caravan i'm staying in
Few years ago, I went to sell old radiator as a scrap metal and got surprised when they gave me around €45 for an old aluminium radiator
I was expecting to get only €10
I think currently you get around 0.50€/kg for scrapped lead battery
(Google translate, sorry for mistakes in translation)
Prices keep changing btw depending on the lead pricing
yeah as other metals too for whatever reason. Worldwide container shortage, Ukraine conflict etc. Need to follow steel price at work. Copper and lead can change quite lot and fast
For basic S355 (Fe52) structural steel in sheets I've seen prices vary in range of 0,50€ - 1,10€/kg from 2011 to today. That's huge difference when you use hundreds tons of it.
It's always interesting to see the phrase "container shortage" considering I could go buy 50 of them right now
There are plenty of containers... they just aren't always where they company needs them and you can't exactly just load ships up with empty boxes if you expect to make money.
Also results in a reoccurring trend of people thinking it's a great idea to bury one as a shelter/bunker...
How to get rich quick in 2025:
- make some product
- increase prices
- pay media company to report on shortage of said product
I see this daily on news portal. Companies paying the media to advertise their shitty products
Saw an example yesterday when they were advertising shoes nobody wants to buy anymore by finding a market with enough idiots and convincing them it's a "new" trend
Not that. Companies making media report on artificial or even completely fictional shortages
Saw that too
Which the media will actually report on without it being an ad
Recently, there was an ad from a shady entrepreneur promoting some small €5000 electric car (probably imported from China) with a questionable quality. He claimed it's the best selling electric car in the country but the funny thing is I have never seen that car on the road and I've never heard about it
Best-selling yet nobody ever saw it 🤣
When KFC launched those "world famous bowls" they were apparently already world famous the nanosecond they were introduced to the public...
weird how that one worked.. very odd
I feel like companies today are shamelessly claiming their products are: high quality, premium, best-selling, innovative, etc....
Even when they know 100% they are not
They are basically throwing random marketing buzzwords atm
Man
It is wild how much scraping goes on on the internet these days
I have a domain that is used purely for some personal projects
I've seen over 360 requests on that dns in the past 24 hours alone
singapore invasion
Its interesting
you gotta add a "no scrape" flag. Which everyone will ofc respect
Lol
Of course
And it's probably AI's scrapping your website. So also add the "no ai" flag. Which everyone will ofc respect.
hopefully not a open API 😄
Everything either doesn't get through the firewall or gets a 405 if it doesn't have my custom headers
It does seem that the US is mostly interested in your server.
Yeah it's interesting
FBI. CIA.
I suppose it's a valid scanning target
Domain name proxied through cloudflare that seems to do absolutely nothing
No auth flow currently
I've got a small engine I rebuilt that doesn't run.. I tried starting it with starter fluid and it fired once and now it hisses and blows fire out the air intake... I must have really fucked something up
timing good?
how did the valves look?
intake valve not sealing can certain cause that
this is how it did look
but uh.. I guess starter fluid in the intake port to crank it for the first time really wasn't the best idea.
it fired with a purpose.. such purpose it sheered the flywheel key in half and spun the flywheel 180 degrees
oops.
that engine is a wreck lol
yea, if the key sheared out, it's machine shop time
I gave up on engines after i rode a four wheeler and it was roaling coal out the side of the block through the head gasket like it was normal
What for? A punch removed the old key and amazon sells more xD
Because whatever caused enough stress to shear that key has very probably damaged lot of other things.
On the side of the piston from that key.
I think it's fine
Yeah, might as well try before you take it to a shop though
Tear it down, visual inspection, put it back together and make sure it turns over smooth by hand
maybe if it have electric start may try to electric start without fuel if it still sounds turning smooth
My car currently doesn't have main real wheel sideways force support mounting bar installed.
Trying to get it cleaned up and reprotect from future additional rust.
Hadn't been protected properly when new but still can be saved.
New one would cost around 1500e and no used ones available as they all have gone the same way.
Just started trying to get lifetime of sand and dust out from inside the structure.
No idea how I could realistically done that without the new small (15kg, 6l, 8 bar, 105l/min @ 6bar(?)) air compressor I got.
It turns over good. I didn't torque the flywheel nut down completely and I used starting fluid directly into the intake port, no carburetor.
So it fired with a purpose and since it went torqued down.. I guess it had some slack in it
Yeah, that key is to just set the position.
Force from that nut is what is supposed to take most of the load.
This might be a lost cause anyway.. because the fuel tank for this engine is long gone... and the only replacement on ebay is $200 usd
That's why I'm like it's fine. I know how I fucked it up lol
Which you didn't mention before now IIRC?
Let me introduce you to your best friend… Metal box with a hole in it
They must have mentioned something about ice.
Anyhow, another stray comment mention for me. I can't believe I moved one and a half months ago and forgot to change my steam download server.
BTW that engine isn't "fine" it's had water in and on it long enough to ruin the valves with rust. That means those gotta go and the cylinder needs hones at a bare minimum. It might run cleaned up as is, but not long.
In fact the water and rust would have been an instant scrap for most people
And that piston(?) head is just coated in mess of various crap.
No idea how leaves(?) etc. got in there.
(I didn't look closer at that image before)
Microsoft is trying really hard to kill windows
they have stopped giving out email codes completely so any attempt at loging in to a Microsoft account anywhere where there isent a login with password option is a softlock ( that includes new os installs so you ltierally cant install windows rn) even if you wanted to anyway the ISO downloads are down and just give an error or the page fucking dies
yay!
disable your vpn
i dont have a VPN
it was something to do with firefox as usual
swapped to chrome and it worked just fine
ahh shoot i forgot i wanted to run cinebench before doing the motherboard swap since loosing the lower limiter would be a big deal in performance
dosent matter im sure il find a before screenshot somewhere
7893 is the score to beat alright
well im no genious but it drawing 140W constant is probably going to give it the win for free now that its no longer limped by the 65W power limiter (and its not PL2 cause its been over 4 minutes)
Started a game of Civ 5 using a mod that created an accurate earth with civs starting in accurate locations but mid game has started to turn into a snooze fest processing so many civ AI's
There is clearly only one solution... thin some out with WAR!
4000 Points gain on a motherboard swap is wild 😂
same hardware otherwise?
yea everything directly touching the motherboard is the same only diffrence is case and cooler but since temp isent a choke it shouldent be a limiting factor
that makes me wonder if something else was wrong
the diffrence is going from a motherboard that follows spec to one that dosent
was it not boosting at all or something?
was limited at the 65W spec so it was dropping like 1000MHZ of clocks from lack of power
but now its pinned at 4709MHZ all core at 150W
nice
where as before it was drooping down to as low as like 3300mhz
10700 at 2.9ghz hurts me
i haven't noticed the slightest bit of performance loss since i switched to eco mode on this 🤣
i put it in gaming mode now and im runnign it again
i wonder if its going to manage to do some OC magic on a locked chip
cause it wasent boosting at all
nerver hit PL2
lesson learned tho il need intake on this case
cause liquid temps climbing to the 40's in 22C room temp ish
yea my liquid's at 40ish in a 27C room 🤣
i dont have a gpu load either
same
might also not like being on its side
i put it on its side to squish the cables into place cause the back pannel was bulging
i feel like vertical gpu might do better with vertical airflow
i'd rather have air flow across the fins instead of it forcing extra air into its fans, but idk if that's an improvement
honestly theres no fitting a vertical mount in here i dont think
B580 is gonna be pretty fat no?
really? i would have tought 3
case isn't made for vertical gpu looks like
idk i kinda see it like the 5090 where its big but the design makes it look small
looks like the FE is like 2.2 slots
its 270MM long and iv got about 285MM of clearance so yea
this thing is gonna be DENSE
it's also the "old size" of gpus
we've really gotten thrown off how small GPUs should be because of Nvidia
old triple fan GPUs were like 92mm fans
all of the partners do it too, to compete with each other. Larger heatsinks are cooler and quieter
and nobody wants to make something with 20c hotter temps and 50% more noise than the other partners
yea but Nvidia really inflated it
its not only that its also making oversized coolers to charge more
yea, $2 more in metal to charge an extra $200
600w 5090 is cooler and quieter than 230w 970/980 dualslots, and the main reason is the 4x heatsink mass and surface area
not saying what's right, just what is
weve traded noise for heat mass
and even if i enjoy it and i think its for the better at some point it adds up and has its consequences

one of my fav memes 😄
lol the original 270X triple fan had 2x 75mm & 1x 85mm fan
that's the earliest triple fan i could find with a bit of googling
triple slot card that everyone loved
i can hear the floppy chattering from here
dualslot
vs current stuff that legit ran 20c hotter with 50% more fannoise even though it was at half of the power too
vs
this even looks closer in size than reality because the bottom pic is a lot longer too
going from 75mm to 110mm fans meant more than doubling the fan area 🤣
had to break out the calculator for it
4400mm^2 vs 9500
even more because the motor takes a larger % of the area on smaller fans
btw serious pain to find fan diameter specs
i think youtube's breaking
comments section keeps dropping out
i feel like they're doing more adblock bypass fuckery
They are! They had a months-long break and started up again a day or two ago breaking everything

will use linux mint*
b580 is very underpowered for 1440p medium depending on the framerate you're targeting
And also not a great pairing for that cpu
I prefer to strand my kerbals in space in the highest detail possible
any other gpu?
im targeting 60-120
My 6750 seems to do ok but i haven't played much kerbal with it yet
pretty much every mod in this guide is what im doing in ksp
no idea about all that, seems like it'd take a decent card but i guess it depends on how optimized all that is
parralax can be very hard or very easy to run
i just run some basic mods
i can run other games with high+ settings though so...
If they're still around they're on the budget friendly side but there are some drawbacks
like no FSR 4...
It does have 12GB though and it kinda seems like 1440 is what it's meant to do
I believe fsr 4 is 9xxxx only... so they'd get pricey lol
well nearly anything is better than this laptop
Yeah I dunno... I knew FSR 4 was coming however I was on a budget
Imho, if you keep waiting for the next big tech, you’d never be able to upgrade your rig anyway..
You need to draw the line somewhere :)
That's true... I knew somebody like that
"nah man jsut wait blah blah is coming out in a few weeks"
yeah then another thing in a couple weeks, then something else in a month... then 3 years later im gaming on a potato
no thanks...
but the "RTX 6010 SUPER NYA FEMBOY EDITION" will have 830 gigabytes of vram and its coming out in 10 years for only 300$!!1!!1
I was worried just a touch moving to ultrawide since it does take more gpu horesepower but it's fine
I can slam out no mans sky, a game i really enjoy
can crank sf way up...
- Tarif & Tax
Then its $3000 :D
using illegal abobr teleportation it is no longer included with tarrifs!1!
I'm waitng on the RTX 10600 Waifu Super Titan Gold Edition
yea but the 10700 is gonna come out a year later after that

External antenna to improve workshop internet. Should be 5G link almost directly to west about 2,4km. But no direct visual summer time when birch trees have leaf
Maybe build it with higher mast when have more time
Or the alignment is off right now.
Way too directional antenna for that distance.
Getting it pointing at the tower exactly would be real pain.
Also is that 90 degrees off from the intended mounting orientation?
Which also craps the reception.
Those antennas are directional for orientation too.
Its small difference in planes how wide the pattern is in horizontal or vertical, it would be better in the other position
Most likely will lift it higher and do compass orientation in winter when the mast is visible
But that doesn't take into account the polarity.
Different thing from the directionality.
Radio signals have polarity.
Horizontal, Vertical, Left-Circular, Right-Circular.
And in this case it is Horizontal or Vertical.
And if the antennas are in opposite orientations, that doesn't work properly, as that changes the antenna polarity.
So from directionality (how accurately it needs to be pointed at the opposite antenna) it doesn't matter much.
And that is what those graphs show, the directionality.
But for signal polarity you went to the opposite, from max sensitivity to minimum sensitivity, if you turned the antenna 90 degrees from the intended orientation.
Upside down (180 degrees) doesn't matter, same as right-side up (0 degrees), but for linear polarity signal, 90 degrees turned is the minimum.
Check out my Speedtest result! How fast is your internet? https://www.speedtest.net/my-result/a/10929816946
This is my phone at same spot outside
Have to look at the rotation when redoing the mount, and try to measure signal strength too
Yeah, need to actively monitor the SNR in the connected device, as 1-10 degree turn can cause significant effect depending on how directional that yagi is.
For that 3.5GHz 5G, 15 degrees of cuts the signal by 12 dB.
Well, 9-12 dB
So something like +-5 degrees would probably be acceptable, +-3 degrees near enough perfect, both vertical and horizontal.
With that 700MHz in turn allowing for up to 30 degrees off while still losing only 3dB.
Wouldnt it be most fair to test the connection to the same server, at least for best comparison of connectivity? :)
Yes, for some reason the android app in phone picks another one.
But for something so distant, having ~60Mbps Down and ~26Mbps Up seems more than enough…
Depending on use case :)
Point was that it is normal for nondirectional antenna, but the numbers with that kind of directional boost were way off.
And terrestrial signals are usually horizontal or vertical polarized, and if the antenna for one of those is 90 degrees of the intended orientation, the signal strength goes to toilet.
Because for vertical polarized radiosignal, the EM field oscillates up-and-down.
And if the receiving antenna intended for that is 90 degrees off, it is then set to receive side-to-side horizontal signal instead.
And the radio-cross section doing the actual receiving drops way off, so the SNR and sensitivity tank.
As the dimensions aren't right for the frequency.
Satellite signals usually use those circular polarizations, where the signal rotates as spiral.
Its a bit more technical for me i must admit..
But wouldnt for most use cases be happy with a vertical and horisontal aligned antenna ?
You can have both, but in this case the antenna is only built for one of them.
And it would halve the outgoing energy in specific orientation when transmitting back if done with both.
just hard line your phone, easy fix
But basically if you had classic dipole antenna for example, if the antenna wire was between two poles, it would be transmitting horizontal signal.
If antenna was hanging down/upright, it would be transmitting vertical signal.
And with that down/upright, the minimums would be down and up, where there weren't any listeners traditionally.
While with horizontal antenna you would have needed second antenna 90 degrees rotated to get circular coverage on earth surface.
And circular polarization wasn't really possibly until pretty recently.
I dont think you can stretch those curled cables from the landline phone 2.6km
Could be wrong :D
new challenge for LTT
Not those, but take any current ethernet cable and you just got 8 lines for that distance.
Traditional phone cabling at the finest was known as Cat 3, and the Cat5 etc. ethernet cables are just continuation with better performance.
Category 3 twisted copper pair cable.
The local ISP had not contacted me back for fiber optic install. Don't know how much digging involved for at this location. Believe there's backbone at the main road ~400 meters away
But for now the external antenna works better than the router alone here in steel beam built workshop
For that distance I would have just gotten omnidirectional outside antenna.
Or even inside antenna set into suitable window.
But I need to start playing with 20% phosphoric acid for rust conversion...
Starting with one of the rear wheel control rods, as those are much easier to get used replacements for.
Also fits mostly into a bucket.
But the small scale test worked, just need to do multiple "layers" with less time in between for the actual phosphating run.
I dont want windows 11 and getting linux setup is going to be a royal pain in the ass to get everything working and w10 is getting end of life soon. What do i do?
Nothing 🤷♂️
Depending on your needs it can be easy to set up
Depending on which distro yeah.
Even Arch has installer
Archlinux whitelisted by bot huh.
Or it dead again.
my current advice for "a working Linux system please"
is Mint or EndeavorOs
whether you want Debian or Archlinux based
everything else can ultimately be tweaked down to anything
but path will be different
Ubuntu have been sorta my go to for a somewhat Windows lookalike destro..
Mint is Ubuntu offshoot with different desktop manager for even more Windows like UI.
Mostly still IIRC using direct Ubuntu packages from Ubuntu LTS releases.
Yeah can see it looks pretty decent from the screenshots..
And beauty of Linux, it just requires a PC with a Powersupply to run :D
486 support is getting dropped in next stable Kernel version!
Don't remember what will be the new minimum x86 CPU model, as that drop will also include at least some of the Pentiums too, some specific newer instruction that will need to be supported.
Ingo Molnar, quoting Linus Torvalds regarding "zero real reason for anybody to waste one second" on 486 support, submitted a patch series to the 6.15 kernel that updates its minimum support features. Those requirements now include TSC (Time Stamp Counter) and CX8 (i.e., "fixed" CMPXCH8B, its own whole thing), features that the 486 lacks (as do some early non-Pentium 586 processors).
Ok, so Intel pentiums are supported, but the some of the various clone manufacturer advanced 486 CPUs that got marketed as 586s are not.
Well to be fair - even if they did discontinue to support 486 on newer Kernels.. Then we shouldn't forget the last "Non-hacked" Windows version to support 486 was Windows 98..
I can see there is someone who managed to get Windows XP running on it - but it wasn't by default..
You do know that Win10 becoming EOL does not mean it'll stop working, right?
You just won't receive any updates any more
And after long enough time, new stuff will be made without W10 support.
Ubuntu sucks but the device support is good
I just updated a game, before it even dowloaded the update 🙈
Updating files was at 98% while downloading files was at 0%. Makes sense steam 🆗
Now it's downloading the files, for the last 2% installation I guess? 4.5GB
updating files is checking the existing ones downloading files is the new ones aka the update
That might explain it.
But developers shouldn't call it update files, but "check files integrity" for clarity.
Because I though my update was completed and that was 15 minutes ago.
yea but we cant have nice things
does windows 10 support FSR 4 ?
just cuz i heard that it doesnt or something like that
why? that should be up to the game and drivers no?
without an old Nvidia oem gpu*
either way FSR 2 is all i get and on linux the option for 3 that does nothing so fsr 4 isent on my list of things to care about
there is some move and swap Metadata that gets pre-downloaded and enable steam to perform stuff directly on current storage
it's usually a 20 to 50MB pre download
does not show up in the ui (that's what it's doing the whole time ui show 0% no data like it's stuck
Windows is the only OS that supports it afaik
OK
i Have seen peaople emulate it onto linux though
and even RDNA 3
Yeah, runtime type conversion stuff that cut the performance in less than half at the optimized stage.
yeah, it isnt good (runs like 7 times worse than on RDNA 4) but you can do it if you want to
Some people hacking it to work is not the same as native support.
Windows is native support
Didn't find anything saying "only win 11" and the techical preview was available for win 10, so...
Depends how much you trust your keyboard skills and your terminal in linux :D
nope I tell you it's the worse support ever
even Windows do not support it well at all in the past
Thats why you take the GPU out of the PC - and run it without monitor.. And trust what you type i the terminal :D
Im aware it will still work. Also, i literally had 11 drivers running on 10 for my laptop. I really dont think it would be that hard to get 11 stuff running on 10
that's no problem, but it's a desktop use pc
but ofcourse that's how I tried as it would 3/4 times black screen while trying

Hello. I guess the high PC temperature issue playing this game is known by many. but. is there any configuration to keep it low? I set my graphics on low but is still too much heat getting out the pc... any help?
lock your framerate or get competent cooling thats about your only options
Power limit your components so that when fully loaded, they have the power consumption that you want
how to do that differs depending on the specific hardware
but it is the one and only root-cause fix
truly yes the best way would be reducing power limits until you lower your heat generation down enough for whatever cooling you have in place but thats out of range of the regular person for anything other than gpu realistically
and this seems like a cpu overheating issue
They were/are concerned with the amount of heat being generated, that can happen just fine at 50c temps on components which are safe at 90c
i.e. not overheating
just generating more heat, AKA consuming more power than desired
where??? they have 3 messages all of them with no context...
I've monitored and GPU is not that hot like the rest of the PC, so I guess is CPU issue, any "easy" limitation?
I set my graphics on low but is still too much heat getting out the pc... any help?
Temperature and heat output are two quite different things. Which is the issue?
If it's heat output then temperature is not a good measure of it, and vice versa
the issue is my leg is getting roasted bc the heat coming out the pc xD
Ye so heat output aka power consumption
well not really
what's the hardware?
just seems like an issue of the cooling being TOO good
Reposition the PC so it doesn't output the heat at your leg?
Can't
drop the fan curves and let it cook instead so more heat gets stored instead of expelled out
Fun idea but only slightly delays the heating. It's going to happen minutes later anyway, and it'll be worse at that point (as the same amount of heat overall is being created, but temporarily stored)
Why not?
Grab MSI afterburner and drag the power limit of your graphics card down
is not GPU problem tho
i cant say im surprised
Temperature and heat output are not the same thing.
You can have component A at 50c outputting 500w, and component B at 60c outputting 10w.
It's the heat output (wattage) that will heat up your leg, not the temperature of the thing.
Your graphics card is the component with the highest heat output, probably by a large margin. If you reduce the power (aka heat output) then it will reduce it by that much.
laptop = no solution
That isn't laptop.
only thing i could say is if it has the same control pannel as mine go in GCC and set it on quiet mode
But basically the real solution would be to make the hot air not hit the leg.
By turning the case, or repositioning it, or making some kind of air deflector.
I Am and still xD
I'll try
ingame, pc is at 60ish and gpu at 50ish
you could go in XTU and drop the CPU voltage but that has its own problems
your not gonna be able to get much lower than that especially considering the hardware
How is a 3070 and 12700 getting hot enough to burn out the rear vent
I have a 3080ti and 12700k with my leg right next to the vent and its fine
40+C air can feel burning to skin.
12700 still pushes 180W and thats if its on spec which it defedently isent
B-series chipset, so it doesn't have infinite turbo tau.
Also, non-K CPU.
i learned yesterday that dosent mean crap turns out gigabyte overclocks em anyway
So boost to 180W for 56 seconds (IIRC), then dropping to 65W.
idk how, i dont care to know how either, but i know now...
i refuse to belive that chip works yet alone hits advertised specs at 65W lol
especially considering my 10700F needs 150W to do it
Only the base clock is "guaranteed".
The number you think as "spec" is Up To number.
and it has 4 cores less
So for 12700, P-core Base is 2.1GHz, E-core base is 1.6GHz.
Anything above is "you might get it".
i still consider the advertised turbo as part of the spec
if its not atleast like 100-200MHZ from it its a lie
Yeah, but it is just "Up To" spec.
And only those Base frequency numbers are guaranteed.
which are a joke
Yup.
Processor Base Power
The time-averaged power dissipation that the processor is validated to not exceed during manufacturing while executing an Intel-specified high complexity workload at Base Frequency and at the junction temperature as specified in the Datasheet for the SKU segment and configuration.
i got a over 30% increase in cpu performance by swapping motherboards to no longer be stuck at 65W
downside is i lost PL2
And by spec, for most of the Intel CPUs they can only go over that Base Power for less than minute.
it held 150W for the full 10 min test... i was impressed but not surprised
considering it was hitting over 200W before
albeit for 5 seconds
And IIRC you have K-CPU, which are set to run at the max power all the time, with infinite turbo Tau.
For the later ones, like the one you have.
Then your MB is set to OC the CPU, which is pretty common setup to set Tau to infinite for all CPUs.
its on default but intel defaults dosent exist on here so idc
But AFAIK doesn't happen on B-series chipsets, only Z-series.
funny story the intel defaults do nothing other than reduce power draw i found out
atleast for me everything is still on ulimited just it draws less power
They do several other things too, but those other settings are much more hidden or not visible at all directly.
its not overclocking just going to turbo spec
its stopping at 4709MHZ and spec is 4700
Not for 10700F.
It is supposed to throttle back after that 56 second tau expires to base power from turbo power.
And the MB maker OCd the CPU by letting it to stay on the turbo infinitely.
Which isn't to the CPU spec.
But is a thing that Intel MBs have been doing for very long time, with Intels unofficial approval.
The best ssid I have ever encountered
my only issue is that its running hot now
since the aio fans dont show up and in turn arent being controled by anything
but yea its been awakened
If your PC is outputting 400w and you have very high airflow, you might have a 22c room and like 27c exhaust temp from the case.
With low airflow, that 400w can be more concentrated into say 1/4'th of the air volume, but 4x the delta-T (so at 42c instead of 27c). Exhaust can feel hotter that way.
With fans ramped my exhaust actually cools me down because there's so much airflow, the exhaust temp stays well below the temp of my hands/arm unless there's 500w being dumped into it.
Eww, my company has started using AI to generate "educational" boards...
Translation: "Passwords are like underwear. Don't show them in public! Don't share them with anyone! Change them regularly!"
Except this would mean I would have to change my password each day if you take this literally 🤣
this is the future

Text was probably added later but you can clearly see bad AI-generated image
They could at least fix those pupils
fingers are still fucked up
Yep
There are prelim reports that they basically just reworked the same pcbs and recycled many of the same components
you'd think that $1000 would get you some hall effect sensors
would be like 50p extra from the factory
wah wah too much money too loose for them
after all why fix it when it draws more money to have people replace them
and people cant just stop buying from nintendo
idk why
since how will they play with younger people
the only nintendo stuff i have is a GB color, GBA SP, and a GC i bought secondhand. since then nothing in 20+ years
the second they started doing networked multiplayer seems to be when things went to shit
no amount of words can explain
just how much i hate how you have to pay monthly just for a privlage of playing online
yea i'll never sub to a game
worst part is
you dont even own the games your paying monthly that are included with it
my mmo has that as an option, but it's ancient and they've never adjusted any pricing, ever
the second you cancel it
all those games and progress are waste
thankfully not for alot of things
i'm waiting for the full delete from companies
there's a soft one rn, of the "oh we're so sorry, it looks like that's been corrupted"
this is the average company that has monthly plans
i just saw archive.org for the oceangate website
who the fuck is telling these people its dead and it happened in 2021
this is the coffin for billionaires
rich and poor people get in regular coffins :(
only super rich get in that
i love how ai italian brainrot probably already caused irreversible damage to the planet
with how much power it takes to run the ai video creators
why just the italian
because im sure ai video creator usage skyrocketed when that got big
CPU no longer spending time processing turns for the Aztec
because they're now all DEAD 😄
Lol what idiot claims changing regurlary?
Is a good thing?
It's a good thing so long as it doesn't severely compromise your password quality
(which it unfortunately usually does)
We are also allowed to use Keepass only regarding password managers
I change my pw every day o.O
I know that BSI recommends regular changing if your password isn't 20+ characters long
Also, it protects you against data breaches
And another set of montly reboots done...
Ok, I did have to reboot my main computer once in between when ESET stopped updating for some reason and that got stuck somehow.
Yes, good drives are worth it.
Where the IronWolf non-Pros are one of the last Ok drives available and IronWolf Pro NTs are high-end for reliability.
All I know is avoid SMR. The rest I'll have to parrot of others
Tho iirc there were concerns about Seagate quality stagnating making them fall behind in comparison
At least on official specs, those IronWolfs are better than anything WD specs on consumer space.
IronWolf Pro NTs are specced same as high-end enterprise HDDs for the data retention etc. related specs.
I tend to ignore official specs unless they auto-disqualify the product
WD Red Pro:s are 10x worse than non-Pro IronWolf for read error rate spec. (10x10^14 vs 1x10^14), and Pro NTs are 1x10^15.
prime example: monitor response times and color accuracy ratings
speaking of
got a question on that
got a VA 144Hz panel rn
and i've noticed that fast-ish movement will give me some blue ghosting
SMR is a tech, Synology is a brand
would locking the frame rate to refresh eliminate that?
Try to turn down overdrive, might introduce black smearing tho.
Welcome to VA panels
No, it's a pixel response thing, not a framerate/refresh rate thing
Backblaze has gone to only using actual enterprise drives...
WD UltraStars and Seagate Exos.
Where those Exos drives are NM models...
Both with 1 in 10^15 error rates.
In those WD failure rates are better, but drive ages are very different.
For less than year old, often seagates are lower failure rate.
Perpendicular song?
What about long term use? I don't think people replace their HDDs annually
No clue
it's a Dell, would overdrive be termed something different?
Point was that in that data, oldest model of WD is 48 months old, and oldest Seagate is 99 months.
So the numbers aren't comparable.
For the failures.
Yes, every brand will have some naming for it - overdrive is the name of the tech
What model?
S3422DWG
Will listen to it later
So for that oldest seagate set, with averate age of 98.6 months (ST8000DM002), they have 9078 drives, and 35 have failed, for 1.52% average failure rate.
back when a TV failing might involve a legit explosion 🤣
For ST12000NM0007, they have 1038 drives, average age of 61.3 months and 23 have failed, for AFR of 8.72% as the worst of current numbers.
Can't find the name of the setting, but it has the options Fast, Superfast, Extreme and most likely off
But ST12000NM0008, they have 19134, with average age of 56.2 months and 110 have failed, for 2.28% AFR.
See response above, discord mobile removed the reply and sent it as a normal message
#off-topic-tech message
Ok, that was just for single quarter failures.
They had over full 2024 numbers lower down.
Some measurements from a trusted tester
was a definite jump up from my 75Hz 1080p UW
(ignore their scores and verdicts tho)
yea iirc i did their recommended color correction stuff
dear god that's so much better 🤣
i bet it happened last week, cuz that's when i started noticing the weird blue ghosting
So on that Backblaze data when checked completely, for enterprise drives WD is better for reliability.
But none of their Red serieses are near the spec of their Ultrastar drives.
While Seagate IronWolf Pros are same spec as most of their Exos drives.
And IronWolf non-Pros are higher than best of WD Reds.
oh yea it's gone
I just buy white-label seagate exos drives for cheap, and have good raid, because drives die.
If WD upped the quality of their Red series, then those Red Plus and Red Pro might be worth recommending.
Currently Red (without suffix) are SMR, and the two CMR lines have consumer drive specs, not NAS drive specs.
ew smr
For data read reliability.
Yeah, but archive drives are specific niche.
No place in actual use drives.
And you cannot currently get consumer drives that aren't SMR.
And even that WD "NAS" Red is SMR which is just fucked up.
my machine has 6x 20TB exos X20 in it right now, in a zfs z2
All the external drives, laptop drives, desktop drives, outside of NAS drives and up is now SMR.
from a reputable white-label drive reseller in EU, who gets them directly from seagate
And even that WD Red is SMR, Red Plus and Red Pro are CMR.
am I allowed to link a shop here?
(not associated, I just like them)
ah no, only whitelisted links :D
20TB white label SAS enterprise drive, 259€
SATA costs the same, so just get SAS :)
you only get 1 year warranty tho on white label
but I see drives as wear parts
Remove the https:// and you can post it

how did i not know this

Allegro?
datablocks.dev/products/seagate-st20000nm000e-white-label-hard-drive?_pos=2&_fid=029e874f6&_ss=c
My drives I bought there work, the shop is well reviewed on reddit, also in regards to returns etc
and they came perfectly packaged
they are based in NL, but ship EU wide, I think for free?
oof
Well its what you get if you have a half eaten apple as your OS.
send from my iphone
tbh, macbooks are pretty awesome, the air so light, well built, ages of battery life, and still great power
and macos >>> windows, i'd rather have a unix based OS any day
apple also announced they're nuking OS compatibility with anything besides apple silicon
not even fully, some intel macs will be supported still
those will be 6 years old when it releases
ah, in tahoe
6 years is not old for end of support
the version after that will stop support, so 7-8 years old even
It’s like windows 11 dropping support for cpu before intel 8th. Tho on windows you can bypass it
right about the same time ye
honestly not much of a shock there
if anything im surprised it lasted as long as it did
the new ios 26 lowkey looks good
said literally who
