No matter where i try to start the game from it just WONT START

I have tried EVERYTHING i can think of, verifying game files, reinstalling, restarting etc. Whenever i try to start it, NOTHING opens, the game doesn't even show up on task manager and then it just closes, what do i do?

Ptag crash

When submitting a good crash report, please provide the details of when or under what circumstances the game crashed as well as the following files which can be found in TheoTown folder:

  • crash.txt
  • log.txt
  • out.txt
You can find out TheoTown's directory for your system by checking out Ptag files.

Moreover, if you can trigger the game to crash with the same error in a reproducible fashion, please mention that in your report as well as that helps us get it to crash on our own machines which in turn lets use fix it easier.

Ptag files

# barren spade Ptag files

TheoTown files are located under such directories:

  • Windows: C:\Users\(insert username)\TheoTown or %USERPROFILE%\TheoTown
  • Linux: ~/TheoTown
  • MacOS: /user/TheoTown
  • Android: /storage/emulated/0/Android/data/info.flowersoft.theotown.theotown/files
By default you should be in /storage/emulated/0/. Uninstalling the game on Android will delete all files, unless you decide to keep the files when prompted by uninstaller.

If you cannot access game files through these directories, game has an in-built file manager for mobile devices which is accessible from the region view menu.

You can find your plugin, music, region and city files there as well as logs for debugging purposes.

Ptag memory

native masonBOT
# hidden sequoia Ptag memory

If you encounter java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space error, that means that the game ran out of memory (ram) while processing your request or action.

If you're on mobile, there's not much you can do to alleviate this issue, closing other applications in the background might help. For PC, you can simply increase the maximum heap space as a launch argument. For example -Xmx4G will let the game use up to 4 gigabytes of memory. That is, of course if you have enough memory. Generally, it's not a good idea to allocate more than 50% of your entire system memory. If that doesn't work and you're on PC, please check if you have 64 bit Java installed, because if you don't, game can only use 2 gigabytes of memory.

barren spade
#

i have 32gb so should i set it to -Xmx16G?

#

since it says 50%

hidden sequoia
#

I'm not sure how far you can push it, but that is worth a shot

barren spade
#

k

#

trying now

#

nope

#

nothing

hidden sequoia
#

That's an odd issue to get after 13 hours of playtime

pliant snow
hidden sequoia
#

Normally this is something that occures earlier on if it were to be a game issue

barren spade
#

how do i find the cache?

#

should i try removing all my plugins?

hidden sequoia
#

If you are going to do that I would just move the managed plugins folder out of the TT directory

barren spade
#

k

#

nop, still nothing

#

every other game works, it's just TT on steam that doesn't

hidden sequoia
#

How long have you had the game?

#

I'm just trying to range how long you've been able to play before this started

barren spade

I'm pretty sure that by doing that, the game crashed, corrupted a process, and caused a bug in Steam, Steam has those bug when you don't close a game properly.

hidden sequoia
#

So I am going to assume that's not it

pliant snow
hidden sequoia
#

If that were the case it would still show up in his task manager then, right?

barren spade
#

nothing here

pliant snow
#

Yes and no, it would come out as a subprocess of steam*

hidden sequoia
#

I mean fully shutting down steam and retrying maybe worth a go

#

Like Arturo said

barren spade
#

alr ill try again ig

hidden sequoia
#

If I had to guess the game maybe trying to use an outdata java version

#

Found somewhere on the computer

hidden sequoia
fiery drum
#

What is your command line argument that you pass to the process in Steam properties?

hidden sequoia
#

I was going to suggest taking a look at this as well

barren spade
hidden sequoia
pliant snow
# barren spade yea that didnt do anything

Did you restart the PC and everything? That was fast.

Btw there is always the option of using beta version 11154p on steam, in case you want to try all the options, only if the issue of the java version doesn't work. 🤔

barren spade
#

how do i use that beta version?

pliant snow
#

Manage - Properties - Betas - Beta Participation - select "beta - Branch for testing new features" just close the modal and the game will start updating

barren spade
#

nop

#

nothing

#

this is the only thing i have in launch options

#

doesn't show anything either when it tries to start

pliant snow
# barren spade nothing

Nothing regarding the fact that it was not updated to the beta version, or that even in beta doesn't open?

Well, you don't have many options left, if you checked ur Java version, your game files, deleted cache download files on steam, restarted the PC to purge process, moved ur plugins and regions out of the TT folder to check that.

The options you have left is to try to open the game from the .exe and not from the steam launcher and see if it gives you an error from there

pliant snow
#

Btw the .exe isn't the shortcut of steam.

barren spade
#

where do i find the .exe?

pliant snow
#

Manage - Browse Local Files

pliant snow
#

And you don't even get the warning modal in Steam that you are trying to launch the game with custom arguments when opening the exe?

barren spade
#

nope

#

it just

#

it just doesnt open

#

no prompt, no warning

#

nothing

#

like straight up just nothing happens

pliant snow
#

Time to leave Windows and install Ubuntu, your problems will be over (and you will generate others, but some that are solvable), you have to wait to see if the admins give you another solution, since you pretty much did everything on the list.

barren spade
#

maybe i have to buy a new copy?

pliant snow
#

I don't think it has anything to do with it, at most you could try opening the game in windows safe mode, but unless it is an antivirus or another program that is blocking TT, I don't think it will make any difference.

fiery drum
#

get rid of any custom launch arguments

#

and check if it runs

barren spade
#

nop

fiery drum
#

then check windows event viewer

barren spade
fiery drum
barren spade
#

ok i have it open what now

fiery drum
#

now figure out why java crashes

barren spade
#

nothing related to java

#

i mean

#

i could try reinstalling steam maybe??

fiery drum
#

thats not the issue

barren spade
#

what else can i do then

barren spade
#

@fiery drum @pliant snow @hidden sequoia
update!

i decided to revert my windows to an earlier date before ANY of this, and it worked!

now instead of just, not doing anything AT ALL, i'm atleast faced with a new error

Hey, as it already says that it is a Java error, well start there, check what version of Java you have now that you went to a previous version and if it is the latest available in your OS, if not, uninstall it first (to avoid problems with old files) and install the latest available, most likely updating again everything will solve the problem.

So check again what JustAnyone told you to do about it, and if after that it still generates an error, the java error logs are called hs_err_pidRN.log (RN = Random Number) and should be in the game folder, so sending it here he can be able to check in detail what could be the error code so u can try to fix it.

Ptag java

pliant snow

Btw if you can tell what type of 106km map you were generating that caused all this Java disaster that would be great, if it was a seed, an image, console or in game new region function.

So they can try to recreate the bug (quite difficult) but that bug having 32 GB of RAM is weird and it would be great to try to recreate it 😅

#

Taking into consideration that the game worked perfectly on Steam before that

barren spade
barren spade
#

it was a regular 106km region/map

#

oh

#

oh my god

#

oh my god

#

i removed all the launch options and it worked

#

it's finally over
