@grizzled nova the story of ff games have usually two modes, the first is that they try to hit you in the feelings by being very blunt with it, like obvious tropes that often enough lands and the second is world building story. In ff14 the game rewards you a lot if you pay attention to little details of the world, lots of references most people will never get. But the problem is that it has to be inside the mmo game structure. I don't like the gameplay of the game and play mostly for the lore, but even then i have the habit of watching lore dedicated videos, and i enjoy figuring out details. Overall this game has lots of extremes of bad and good storytelling, i hate some characters even expansions but some i love. Also the game is designed, said by devs themselves, to be a final fantasy theme park. in the end it all depends what your goal with the game is, you can skip and rush current content and watch videos later, you will only miss having your own journey, but if you don't have the time or patience that may not be worth.

So every expansion will have a secondary city that will have this kind of vendors, they'll offer you max ilvl gear (for the expansion). And usually you can equip that gear and it'll last you till you reach the next expansion
At minimum you want the weapons, since that's the biggest upgrade to DPS
