Steam - Upgrade from level 2 to 3 ship... took money but didn't upgrade

I saved up the 1k crystals and spent them to upgrade. Waited 5 minutes then rushed. No error messages but after the screen reloaded, it was the same level 2 ship and my avatar still shows level 2. I saw similar stuff in the Demo but always got refunded. However, in EA PSS2, I lost my 1k crystals and now must wait and try again and hope it works next time.

and once I got back to 1k crystals, I found that it's making me do another 3 PvP missions

actually, it didn't. it removed all of my rooms and I'm still level 2

weirdly, I was getting prompted to make a lab but then that prompt disappeared (right as my rooms disappeared). and of course, my level 2 ship can't build a lab
