Well portal tab is where you get new gear and level up. Solo/fireteam/arena/pinnacle/crucible ops are free. Do the ops with bonus engrams
The portal seasonal hub has a free reward track with bright dust and stuff. Complete it to get 2 free tier 5 armor every week and 1 tier 5 weapon the next week by talking to Zavala
The world tab has a timeline in the top right so you can see the chronological order of expansions.

higher power = better gear drops (over time), like what the other dude said, portal is really all we got rn so grind that out for a while and get your gear up, the new expansions power crepped the hell outta the old expansions BUT they are still fun if u wanna go mess with them
