Havent played in a long while. Ran out and I do not see a way to get them (other than buying from rahool which is too expensive on cores for me) by looking at the rewards for portal activities. Is there a good way to farm them?

Portal activities drop them at higher tiers. I get a shard and 1-3 prisms almost every ultimate run. Also drops on GM (400+ power) but not as often

Any ultimate or Gm Difficulty on the portal will drop a bunch of Acendant Shards, you have to level up your gear to queue up for those, Although it is NOT required for masterworking any gear that is Less than tier 4

Do you still have to flawless it then? I did a few grandmaster solo ops with max point modifiers but must have had a death in each of them cuz I didnt get any

No, chances increase with grade only. Not sure about GM rates, did that a long time back but on ultimate even with B grade I get a shard and a prism every game
If you had brought the edge of fate ultimate edition, 10 shards would be waiting for you in special delivery terminal, don't forget to claim those.
If not, just level up, by the time you start getting T5s (and those are likely the only gear you won't dismantle), you would also start getting enough shards
