So early in the game, check out everything on offer and choose the playstyle which suits you best. Unlock void and arc subclasses (Ikora gives you quests from what I recall)
Also try titan and hunter. You can create new characters right away
Follow the new light quest to get comfortable with controls, etc. Then try out campaigns, most are good entertainment value even if you don't play after that
There is a chest near Zavala on tower which will give you excellent starting gear for all characters
