In a big part of my dungeons and raids runs, in the ones i've learnt in particular, i used Tether during DPS to support my team.ates and make all of us do more damage to the boss...
Does it mean i've been playing wrong for months?

Try using tractor against the Witness.

you sound very hostile im only trying to help you. there are other debuffs you can use other than tractor and tether like divinity. you want max dps for most bosses use a grapp;e prismatic build
but like i was saying you play the game how you want and what works best for you for survivability and gameplay
