Let me simplify - think of everything before current expansion sunset. Enter portal - bespoke collection of strikes, exotic missions, crucible, etc. Each run gives you higher power gear. Ignore prime/powerful etc, you can get to max power by grinding
Visit Zavala before you start grinding, he'll give you a set of 300 power new gear. Weapons/armor now have a tier system, higher power activities give you higher tier gear

The cap is if youre doing an activity and it doesnt give you an upgrade, you need to make it harder, or choose something harder.

You can see the exact reward you will get before launching matchmade activities since there is no time bonus / no time limit modifier.

Put an armorer ghost mod on for the build you want. Copy builds, if it sucks and doesnt work, move on to the next.
The better question is why do you think you are struggling, https://www.bungie.net/7/en/News/Article/twid_09_25_2025 has a table showing the possible rewards you can get.
No reason to care about B vs A and just make sure that you are playing instead of sitting in orbit.
Either spend time making groups to try and clear slightly harder content for +1 higher reward or can solo it to save time on finding people.
Or just watch youtube and queue matchmade content.

You can customize activities to improve your grade (and hence rewards). e.g. locked loadouts increases your score, so does touche (all new gear), pressure cooker (you'll always complete solo ops in time anyway)
