Try the game for a few days and decide for yourself. Assuming you have at least the legacy version you should have access to all campaigns till final shape. Start with new light (tutorial) to get a hang of basics first

Shadowkeep, Beyond light, Witch queen, Lightfall, Final shape are the campaigns released in this order. My suggestion would be to go in this order, enjoy the stories and unlock subclasses along the way

There is another aspect of the game called portal which helps with levelling up power and access to better gear but can get repetitive and draws most of the negative reviews

If you play through 1-2 campaigns, that should give you an idea if this game is for you or not. I started playing ~6months back and loved some of the campaigns. By this time you'll also understand what to look for, optimise, etc.

Once you understand the basics, there is an in-game looking for group (lfg), this discord and other places you can find similar players. Portal has matchmaking for some activities so you can always play as a group there with game matching you

If you bought edge of fate campaign, start there. Great campaign which also helps you with levelling up. If not, play other campaigns, portal activities and then decide

Legacy version (all DLCs except latest) is usually available for ~80-90% discount and is great value for money even if you don't want to play destiny ever again
