As title says downloaded the game yesterday and got my power to 2020 with the free gear. Just unlocked the prismatic subclass for hunter and wondering where I should be going in terms of progression. As well as what builds I should keep an eye out for

get a general understanding of armor mods. Try and get as many exotics as you can and understand them, and once you feel like those arent overwhelming anymore try look for build guides on youtube
dont just blindly copy and paste peoples builds - for your own sake - try and understand whats happening what is synergising and why it is

Next DLC release is a month away, which will likely turn the current buildcrafting model on its head
My suggestion would be to play the campaigns you have access to, weekly strikes from vanguard menu (to get exotics), unlock as many exotic weapons from tower archive (Xur gives exotics) and experiment around
If you find survival to be an issue, google or ask here and you'll get answers. Guardian ranks 1-5 make you familiar with general mechanics, upgrades, etc.
