You choose your favourite exotic armor piece and try to build around it. Study mods and their descriptions and choose whatever benefits you the most
Same with subclass fragments and aspects
They're not complicated so it's pretty simple to figure out what synergizses with your choice
Builds being power crept is a normal thing. Metas change over time and even the most broken builds will be useless after some time
