How do I u get gear above 1970. I want to try higher level activities but I'm struggling to get enough power.

You have to do activities that award powerful or pinnacle gear. They're marked with a little golden circle on the destinations tab
Powerful gear will drop and push you until you hit 1990 and then only pinnacle gear will get you to 2000 power. After that you need to farm XP to get your artifact to boost you with power beyond 2000
