Ive heard that I would need to do Season of the deep prequest, but do i need to complete the entire 39 steps or just the initial "descent" mission

If you’re doing it solo yea but you can just get a sherpa to do it for you

Find someone with the fish who can do it for you, then you don't need to worry. However, I don't know how many people run it anymore :/
Maybe try the exotic quest or seasonal event section. Seems to be there occasionally!

@high ruin You just need to do the Seasonal Questline until you have access to Deep Dives, as that is how you get the weapon.
As for the other requirements, you need an exotic fish from Nessus, EDZ, and Throne World, turn all 3 in to get 3 "Broken Blade" items (they don't show up anywhere sadly)
Activate 3 hidden Statues in any deep dive (preferably a private one with two other people also trying to get it) and a secret door will open up on the right at Midnight Depth
