for starters at the moment an event is happening which lets everyone get max level equipment instantly

Go to the hall of champions in the into the light tab, and next to shax there's a box you can open

Normally you'd have to farm for powerful and pinnacle drops to level up your light

As for how you get better gear, decide what gear you want, then do the relevant activity

Let's say you want a riptide - play crucible, get engrams, focus them

Let's say you want an apex predator - do Last Wish (the raid it comes from)
