They are real, but unfortunately due to restrictive Swedish labor laws they had to use cgi for the movies

Currently, most of the Smurfs are mucking about in a nature preserve they bribed the Swedish government to make for them

Gargamel escaped jurisdiction in the 1960s, so he moved to the USA to work with his estranged half-brother Merasmus, before retiring from the dark wizard business and becoming a librarian
