forsaken is important as it has the most exotics and many are good

but there's a bundle on sale because of Christmas, I'd recommend the legacy pack and one of the new DLC's

the little icon top left indicates which season/dlc an item is from, so you could go off of that if you already know whats good

also, light.gg should be able to tell you most of the info you are looking for

forsaken and if your friend is hunter then shadowkeep is a must
