The plates on the opposite side of the chasm seem to activate at random. Sometimes when only 2 people are over there, sometimes it won't when 4 people are over there.

What activates those platforms so that the rest of the team can run around to get their swords and cross?

if you stand on the middle plate on a side that will anger the totems
so if you stand on the top side middle plate it will build bridge and anger top side totems, so bottom people can go free
but careful, if you step on bottom middle plate, the bottom totems WILL get angry again, so only go over it when you go up the bridge

yeah we figured out our issue. The original side wasn't getting off their plate so we were never building from the far side
