so i'd personally suggest playing dares of eternity if i were you starting off
so you can get some guns and legendary shards to help you
you can find it in the eternity tab
you can also watch a couple youtube guides on what you can do as a f2p

unfortunately you missed out on solstice so you cant get high stat armor as easily atm

you can save up your vanguard engrams and purchase a very good rocket launcher from zavala at the tower

most of the good and worthwhile content is locked behind expansions
just play the base playlists and get some powerful gear to drop
and also do what shark said about playing dares of eternity because you can get really great weapons out of it (bxr battler, wastelander m5, pardon our dust)
those three can come with really good rolls

I would say there is a lot of paywalled content but there’s just so much in destiny that honestly just the f2p content is more than a lot of entire paid games
and there’s ways to get really good gear, i’ve only been playing (f2p) for a year and already I’m stacked enough to do gms, raids, etc., like i have 60 oryx clears

i'd recommend running prophecy and vog
you get really cool trials of the nine armor from prophecy and vog drops the best handcannon in the game pve wise

start by doing first mission in witch queen to unlock crafting
do dares
get a crafted sword and trace from dares
do strikes for hothead
do crucible for riptide and exotic reward
play gambit for exotic
at that point
if u have decent roll on hothead and riptide
you should be primed for vog and kings fall
late stag
get eager edge sword from dares

dares is unironically a wet dream for new lights
you can get the best weapons from dares lol

dares first but when you have time, I would recommend doing the crafting quest to get the taipan, picking up some decent ad clear and going into kf it’s not too hard oryx especially and raids in general do not require stacked gear
as long as you know how to do mechanics well (watch a guide or have someone teach) and boss dps is decent then you should have no problem with normal version
