If I have a weapon that is higher power, do I need to equip that specific weapon in order to receive pinnacles that is an upgraded power level?

you need to equip the higher power lvl equipment first ATLEAST once.

the game basically remembers the highest power lvl equipment you equipped, and basically remembers that,

so either you feed the unwanted higher lvl item to what youre using, or atleast equip it once so its gonna register as the highest power lvl item you have

I don’t even think you need to do that, it should be able to recognize your gear anywhere, even in the vault or other characters.

Only thing you can’t do I think is have armor from one class on another, but I don’t know why you’d do that to begin with. That might not be a factor either.

But I’ve totally just thrown my new highest power gear in the vault, never equipped it, and continued to get higher drops.

u do not need to equip the gear. if youve acquired it, the game takes into account ur highest power lvl.
