I saw a YouTube video advising players to dismantle extra class items (except for the raid items) and never put them in the vault. Is this true?

Most of the time, yes. Class items don't have stats, so in most cases, no class item is better than another. The exceptions being Artifice armor and raid items because of the +3 stats and raid mods respectively.

There are also very few cases where you need a certain class item to progress, like with the Shadowkeep campaign or the guardian games class item
