i like watching speedruns, and a lot of their movement tech/skips are based around heat rises. nearly every time they jump upwards with it, they shoot their feet with a GL to self-damage. is there a reason why?

I can't remember the name of the GL but, they do it for a sort of rocket jump because heat rises goes off of momentum, so the essentially just do it for a higher glide jump.

it's mountaintop usually, but how does damaging yourself give more momentum?

#

as far as i know, mountaintop doesn't do knockback if that's what you mean

it works similarly to scorch rocket jumping, its not the damage giving momentum but the explosion, you don't actually shoot until the second tap of jump once you're gliding

#

im pretty sure you can recreate it with scorch rockets easier but moutaintop is used because its a lightweight and heat rises just boosts your gliding. its basically rocket jump for a slight speed boost and height.

does it make that much of a difference?

its situational I know for RoN its pretty necessary for all the verticality in the transition parts, but other than that I don't think its worth doing.
