My wife just got into the game and she hasn't played since the season that witherhoard was the weapon pass exotic. How do I get her the catalyst.

AFAIK if she doesn't already have the weapon, but it from the kiosk. After that, banshee should have the catalyst quest and she will need to complete those steps
think it involves some crucible grenade launcher kills and a bunch of playlist/seasonal activity completions. The catalyst boosters from this season pass should work for it now too

like 3 months of effort down to 2 weeks level

The witherhoard catalyst quest is a nightmare for sure. Best way to get it done is to get it as soon as possible for passive progression for the first two objectives, then play mayhem in crucible for the GL kills.
