I'm started playing earlier this week & have three characters at 1750 right now, pretty standard gear. Just wanna know what the best thing I can do is.

Until you can do legendary lost sectors, id check Xur on a weekly basis

other than that some vendors in the tower offer exotic engrams as well

best way to get exotics generally would be lost sectors or nightfall at master/grandmaster difficulty
