I've been fighting them but I don't know what would be better to use against them as I've been having some damage issues. Are they considered Majors or Bosses?

They exist as both types, Majors have a triangle icon, Bosses have a square icon. You can also tell by whether they're finishable or not

they all have sword icons so I think finishers is my only option

The sword means that you're I think 10 - 20 power under the enemy

I think most of them are just majors and only if they have a yellow health bar at the bottom they are considered as boss
