One problem I always find myself in is not knowing when to keep gear or guns, not knowing whats the best stuff to have, I know its kinda personal preference but I just don't know what I should be aiming for, any advice?

For armor it's relatively simple: Identify which 3 stats you want to max out on that class and keep anything that has high overall stats and as much of them in those 3 stats as possible
How strict you want those criteria to be can change. For example when farming artifice armor I'd only keep armor that has max ~2 points in unwanted category and is 62 or above
For weapons, apart from obvious meta weapons like Forbearance, it's much more subjective, but perk popularity on light.gg and suggested rolls on DIM can be a good basic guideline if you have no clue
