Play the current season of the seraph with them? From there he can get the voltshot ikelos smg, fire and forget linear fusion rifle and path of least resistance trace rifle with voltshot
You can also get them Gjallarhorn if they have the 30th anniversary pack. Would be worth buying it if not due to Xur's weapons like Falling Guillotine, BXR-55 Battler and all the rotational stuff
The Lament is a great sword for boss damage and also worth getting if your friend has beyond light
But the right loadout comes with playing.... just let them have fun and not focus too much on endgame yet, otherwise they'll quit with all the grind lol

Would just let him check out stuff by himself, but would recommend him Wishender and Le Monarque if hes into bows
Other than that he mainly needs a good Heavy and primaries that hes comfortable with
Since the champ stuff changes with lightfall we'll have more freedom to choose favorite weapons for endgame stuff
