If I'm doing an activity that drops a pinnacle, do I need to have all my highest power level gear equipped, or can I keep it on me but not equipped, and the pinnacle will drop higher than my highest power item?

Your gear just needs to be equipable and on your account somewhere. The drop will drop higher then your average of your highest gear

It won't necessarily be an upgrade for the specific slot
