i'm returning to the game and have been trying to figure out so far whats good special damage besides merciless. Is arbalest just better than izanagis right now or can you still use it for gm nightfalls?

Izanagi is good, great even, its just that arbalest and witherhoard are in the same slot and way more multifuntional
Witherhoard is a jack of all trades that can be used for pretty much anything (like anarchy)
And arbalest is bis in high end content like gms (because intrinsic anti barr and it hits like a truck and it has good ammo economy and it breaks all shields)

izanagi is still good for dps but for GMs i prefer arbalest since they are more useful (built in anti barrier, can deal with all shields, easier to use...)

As a tldr, izzy is a specialized gun that deals massive burst damage if you can aim it well
Arby is a strong gun for taking out majors and the like from a distance, and can serve as a fallback dps weapon in raids
Witherhoard is a busted good gun that cleans through ads incredibly well, while dealing great damage to tougher enemies in a passive, dot way, allowing you to use your other weapons
