those are lost sectors, and on rotation, every day a different lost sector will have increased difficulty that you can spam. doing lost sectors solo at expert/master difficulty has a relatively large chance of giving you an exotic engram

additionally, if you go to the engram guy in the tower, he can open the engrams for you on a specific armour type, different every day. So if you want specifically a helmet exotic, you can choose focus on them but this also changes every dayt

doing difficult nightfalls would prob be enough to teach you all the fundamentals you'd want to know to try all the end-game content
