You have to max out his reputation, then you gain access to an additional menu and can focus it

Best method for gaining rep is focusing a specific exotic on the highest menu you can

Otherwise, just choosing the random focus also works fine

You can get the exotic engrams from the weekly ritual challenges and from legend or higher lost sectors
