GRRM is a notorious pantser, he set up all the characters, nurtured them, and let the plot grow as it did. But the downside is that he struggles to make plot points make sense (he often talks about how hard it was for everyone to get to mereen at the same time so plot could happen). The show runners are planners, they have a set destination in mind (the end) and they have to make the characters get there. Sometimes it feels forced, which we can tell, because characters turn into plot devices. BUT, it will end, which can't be said for grrm
