If any of you ever wanna start finding out how to identify and fix weird problems you encounter, and are sick of googling and finding three hundred solutions that don't work

Check out mark russinovich and his utilities and books

He started a company called Winternals to help provide (relatively) user friendly tools for diagnosing and dissecting processes and their interactions

It was so good that Microsoft bought his company outright in like 2005, renamed it to Windows Sysinternals, and now he's the chief technology officer for the entirety of microsoft's azure division

I spent the last hour building a small script to force the Windows MFT to clear file entries

With solid state drives the Trim and GC functions of the disk get rid of the actual data from the drive usually once a week (configurable)

but Windows will still keep the names of old files, folders etc in the MFT

forever

or at least until a random number is reached and it starts pruning

the script i built creates 10,000 almost-empty files in a folder, and then deletes them

so that the only mft entries are for the trash/useless generated entries

why isn't this more of a feature for privacy 😮

the script i built is for people who regularly wipe free space so that already deleted files cannot be recovered

not the active ones on the disk

The MFT is just an array that points to actual data on the disk, you can only recover very small files from it (files under 4KB in size are stored directly inside the MFT instead of in data areas, for efficiency sake)

not everything is gone

But again though, this only affects the record of files you have already deleted; all data on a drive when and if it fails is still going to be recoverable using all normal methods

it doesnt clear the MFT of active file entries, only those of files marked as deleted

password managers are the bare minimum I'd say nowadays if you're trying to secure your data, since most people use shitty passwords or variations on the same password over and over

so if one site is breached and it's database gets dehashed (or worse, they store passwords in plaintext), then all it takes is one small leap to break into all your accounts

also, use 2 factor authentication apps as often as possible

The RSA token apps (microsoft authenticator, google authenticator etc) all use RSA and generate based on private keys, so those are far more secure

SMS 2FA helps make sure it's you accessing your account (since most people dont have TLA resources), but RSA authenticators means they can't generate or access the code in the first place
