This typically indicates that you don't have a solid internet connection to the game servers. Just to check, but if you're connecting from a mobile data connection, can you try connecting via Wi-Fi, or vice versa? That can sometimes help

Are you perhaps both from the same country? This can sometimes happen with certain ISPs where they can lose access to AWS, where the game's servers are hosted. Normally that resolves itself quickly, but is sadly outside of what we can do to help fix
