@robust wolf. The amounts of gold or food collected do not matter. Do it one by one and do it slowly.
You can get one gold token every 1h 20m, one food token every two hours and one breed/hatch every 8. The timer starts when you gem the previous node. And you can do one token at a time, or do all 6 gold, 4 food, 1 breed/hatch every 8 hours. It makes no difference.
Regarding the breed token, if you breed a firesaur with a treezard it does not count. Everything else works. Try pandaken + pandaken, or firesaur + any fire legendary.

@ancient bison a gem is a gem. The whole point of the strategy as to when to gem is to minimise the amount of gems spent. I am not saying it is the end of the world and I am not advising anyone to gem hatches to create space.
But if someone asks if they are doing ok and posts a screenshot, I will tell them if they are missing a hatch.
(Side note: I am not sure if all breeds/hatches on all nodes reduce the final cost by only one gem. I will ask AK123456789 about it.)

In the no buffer strategy the last node is 1 day 20 hours. In the 7hr buffer the last node is 1 day 16 hrs. That photo is in line with having started the node slightly more than 16 hours ago. Which allows enough time for doing 1 day 20.
If yours looks the same now, you can still get down to 51 gems, provided you gem near the end. So while I have no idea when you or @bleak light gemmed your previous nodes, going by the actual time now and the in event timer, I come to the no buffer last node conclusion.
What are buffers
@trail elm a buffer is some time leeway. Depending on your timezone, a progressive island may start in the middle of the night for you and you may miss the first collections. This is why there are two strategies. One for people who are in time zones where the event starts and finishes at “normal” times, and one which allows for delays.
