Having a ping that fluctuates like that will cause your shots to not hit when the other player is on that spot. If you had a lower ping than your opponent and combined with good aiming you'd be on a serious killing spree

When you beat a player with more points than you, you earn more than when you beat a player who is lower than you.

yesterday after a couple experiments at 60 fps and 15 ping, i litteraly aimed at a second myself on a private server with crackshot and i experienced so many blanks even though my second account was standing still(on my second computer), and i got tons of blanks, even though i specifically spent over 20 seconds to shoot at the exact most optimal spot on my second eggs. this was on castle, and usually my second egg would get blanked around half-three quarters. the maps length or more.

I believe this is due to an older cache as we got similar reports after the last update but then they stopped.
If you clear cache and reload then it shouldn't be an issue again
