Ya I have been, I’ve actually started making a lore series on my channel as well. Starting off with the stories then another series discussing theories of said stories. I commented on @rotund ferry “the lowdown on lore” video under my YouTube channels name “center step gaming”

@timid pollen what if you looked at the hunters in a dark souls kinda way, what if with @rotund ferry theory of voodoo and the invisible world that the hunters are brought back from the dead to hunt the evil. That’s why John Hayward writes “I will die tonight”. Because once his job is complete he will die again and to keep up with the games perma-death the evil in the land has the ability to banish you from coming back for good. So when you die from the spider or grunt or butcher you are completely lost. Like in dark souls they are hollows, dead things brought back to life for one purpose, to banish the evil from the living world. To further solidify my theory this is why that voodoo priestess writes the head of the aha, how would she know about them if she wasn’t part of the process of bringing the Dead back, which is something voodoo is known for.

I can see your theory and understand it, but there are some things that dont add up. Why would a dead man want money? Why would a dead man be a bounty hunter? Also, in voodoo, those brought back to life are typically brain dead. They only obey the commands of their owner with no free will. And while you could make a case for the Hunters that they are following the AHA commands, I do not believe them to be under some kind of spell. Now, I do have some theories as to who the Hunters are and why, and what the world might be like outside of the Hunt, but I do not want to say them directly out loud just yet to the public. I want to write them down and make a case for them xD I do think your points do have some interesting things though, like why the lady contacted the Director, but I believe for some other reasons mainly discerning the Dark Sight.

Ya I don't think the Hunters are dead. And I have confirmation that John's "I will die tonight" is his Oath of the Night. Simply what he uses to keep himself grounded in reality, and to remember that he isn't a God, but a man that can die.

I remember hearing one of the dev's saying that the hunters have some sort of corruption in them, i beleive it was the e3 gameplay when they showed off teh ability to find the clues. waht if the oaths have something to do with keeping the corruption at bay?

In a way, that is true. But is there a direct connection? Im not sure. I think the Oath is more or less their life motto. What keeps them moving and fighting. My story The Hymnal of Maxim is about my OC’s Oath and it essentially reminds him why he fights and why he is killing his fellow man. Also, he reminds himself why he has lived his days and if it happens to be his last thought then at least it is a happy one.

Honestly, read all of the story posts on the website, read the background to the game and where/when t is set, read reddit posts, and what videos/streams. Piece together what you can and let us know your thoughts:) thats about all we can do at this point xD

dm about that id like to learn it. also in the the passage "process of elimination" i was reading it and trying to put togther a time line of when this "plague" started and something that stood out to me, well a couple things that did, 1. it says that wood is rotting, now depending on what kind of wood it is (which in the bayou cypress is the most abundant i believe) it could take a large stump 10 years to rot. but i dont think the dev's want ot stretch back 10 years, so if we go by food preservation for the 1800's and we say this is a somewhat middle class town we can assume that most of the meat was fat capped or salt cured and hung. Fat Cap requires you to store it in a cool location like a basement, this process can help the meat last up to a month, salt curing and hanging requires a month of salting then 6 months of hanging (think a really slow process of beef jerky). So i think we are looking at a timeline of a month (at the shortest) to 6 months (the longest) that this plague has been happening
and the wood that is being described as rotting in the passage is part of a foundation so obviously its not as thick as said stump, so that lines up with time line i just presented

Thats a really good thought... That leads me to believe what the AHA has been doing over the years. Its obvious that this infection hasnt been there forever. So what did they do before this infection? Has it exited elsewhere on the globe at different times? The HA has existed forever, but what has been their enemy? And how long had the AHA been formed? The revolution? Civil war? First colonies? That leads to a lot of good questions.

i might have an answer for what they were doing before now
in the passage "the trials of dr reed" dr reed states "I am spider i am scorpian i am moth." in the hebrew language from the dead sea scrolls "mastema" is an angel associated with moths. he is considered the angel of disaster, the father of all evil. it stims from the hebrew word Mastemah meaning hatred, hostility, enmity, or persecution. constantly we are shown text with references to moths or even zombies with moths coming out of them, moths are a constant in this game so it leads me to believe that we are dealing with some kind of demon that started this plague, either from conjuring or something else. in reference to " I am Scorpion", scorpians are talked about in the christian bible book of revelation and they are associated with extreme torment: "and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh man." So with all this in mind, if we are dealing with Mastema (the demon causing the corruption) and associating scorpians with the torment of the land and the people, and the spider as a boss in the game id like to propose that the AHA has been around since the bliblical era because the letter that Phillip Huff Jones wrote does not give any indication of surprise or confusion to what is happening, leading me to believe that he's known about these horrors for a while.
Maybe not as the AHA but the AHA might be a branch from a deeper and older chapter of hunters

Dude if this lines up it will line up exactly with the Homeric dialect which I’m sure is from Ancient Greece back in 726 b.c. Which will give us a time line of hunters that reach back 2,744 years. OMFG what if the first hunters were apostles!?
And even better in the Christian bible it talks about Angels laying with humans, what if the first hunters were the off spring of this and that’s how the hunters can see the clues on the map and banish the bosses because of the power that courses through their bloodline.

in case anyone was wondering, this passage translates from Haitian Creole to Matthew 12:27 (NKJV): "And if I cast out demons by beelzebub, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they shall be your judges."
I believe this may be who ever conjured the corruption speaking to Phillip Huff Jones, with a lose meaning of if we to go to hell when we die then who are we to cast out hell's demons.

Ok here's my two cents on everything! 1. The oath of the night. I had the same thought as you, but had it confirmed that unfortunately that is not the case. It really is their way of keeping themselves grounded. Perhaps on a personal level it could help stave off the corruption, but not for every Hunter. 2. The last two sentences are just mixed up English. It says "I feel as if it tries to take root. Words on a page" 3. As far as the moth goes, a very popular symbol for death in almost every culture, but Hoodoo culture especially, is the Deathshead moth. It's because its wings appear to be a skull when they come together. They are also a sign of demonic activity/possession. 4. We do know the AHA is a new chapter of an old group of hunters. I personally believe their prey has always been demons. 5. Love the idea of the Hebrew and bible ties. My only thing is that the lying with angels doesn't quite add up. We know for the most part that they have these abilities because they gave up a part of their humanity.

They are intelligent which is why I think it's Dr. Reed. Generally in story telling you don't bring attention to a character if they simply are a small piece of the story. Obviously there are outliers to every situation. But his corruption appears to be a longer, and more persistent corruption. I believe he was possessed by an intelligent demon rather than just turned into a zombie grunt.

i do have one moe thing about about demons in the game, when i was researching definitions for certain words in the game being used i came across "demiurge" and "malignant". something that stood out to me was that when these words are put together you get a definition of something that is evil in nature producing death and deteration that is an autonomous creative force, basically an evil diety that creates death and disease. I was thinking it could have something to do with whatever caused this plague
plus just before it says malignant demiurge in the "process of elimination" passage, it says "handcrafted" so something or someone has created this evil i think
to further explain, i dont think it was just demons spawning from hell and reaking havoc, but something or someone brought it here for a purpose

First I used all the "coded" text on the html code of pages. the coded text is named "Voynich" (as it used this "alphabet") Then I realised that each symbol = one letter, finding enough text gave me the opportunity to build the alphabet translation
I made (I hope...) an interesting post about that on the hunt showdown subreddit

@rotund ferry I can understand the oath. I still stand by my OCs oath and its meaning, as it is a very grounding habit to remember your loved ones. It helps remind you of why you live and dont die. Also, do we know for a fact that the Hunters precisely understand what is wrong with them? Like, yes they can see and sense these things, but does every Hunter (or Hunters before they are Hunters) know exactly what it is. Because I know the dark sight is a game mechanic, but can they really turn it on and off at will, or is it something that is always there and with them? (Just a thought. I know most everything says that they know and understand, but why is that part so final when everything else is so ambiguous?)
Also about the AHA. Yes, they are a new branch, but how old are they? What did they hunt before Louisiana? Was there another outbreak elsewhere? And where else is the HA? Are they everywhere? Did the other chapters die? What did they hunt before, and where will they go next? Is it the same demon or the same plague they have been chasing this whole time or are they bound in duty to fight all darkness? These are some of the questions I have xD

How does the Voynich manuscript fit into the lore though? Its cryptography was never decoded. Are the designs merely similar to the art of Hunt or did they actually reference it in the lore?

The Voynich script was never deciphered however many cryptographers have used the symbol system for their own codes to better hide them. In this case, it is a 1 to 1 translation to romanized letters. So one symbol is A, one symbol is B, so on and so forth. That is how it has been used by Crytek and by myself (different codexes) to this point.
So a secretive society would for sure have their own code, like the AHA, this why the Director uses Voynich, aka hunterscript.

Well you see, these mobs and demons and “bosses” are not, from a lore standpoint, what most games see them as. They are simply beasts that have evolved into these forms. Or humans that have. So they are just like normal zombies or humans, just that have gained some attributes and such. So with that known, it is safe to assume that the Spider and the Butcher are just one of many Spiders and Butchers. Now, for a story sake we need to give these “boss” titles and names to match. But really they are just a beast like all the others. Since they are one of many, we can assume this is happening all over Louisiana, or maybe a select area that we have secluded, something like that. But what this map that we have seen is just like California in the gold rush. It is there for any bounty hunters to come to to kill, steal, rape, and pillage. Okay maybe not those last two... but you get the idea. They come to hunt these monsters and leave.
Now, I do not know where they come from. But I do not believe they come directly from hell or from a portal or something. It is a plague, a disease, so it infects the living. Theres nothing really supernatural about that. It mutates and evolves whatever it touches into a being more instinctual. So, I do believe that as bounty hunters we truly are cutting the plagued areas down and sectioning it off little by little (hence match by match we grow stronger) but in order to make it a game there is not a finite number of matches or territory being covered. Same reason why it is only one map. That single map represents the whole of the infected area in Louisiana. Maybe we will see more of it, maybe other places. Not entirely sure yet.
Okay I think that answers most everything...
REMEMBER! Mostly speculation, I do not know the full answers as I do not work for Crytek but I believe a lot of what I think is logical enough to be a sound answer.

Seemingly a very large amount. The game wasnt a match based multiplayer game
Unless I'm baddly mistaken, there was no news about any multiplayer until Showdown was shown.
The original Hunt didn't have this kind of transparency and community focus before it was replaced with showdown, so I don't think anyone can really answer your question except for a team member.

I do believe it is about perception. But that provides basis for both sides of the argument.
I could say that they simply believe in these things and that what they are doing is actually banishing them to hell because that is what they were taught to do and brainwashed into believing these aspects.
Or I could also say i think they believe this and they have these powers so they understand things a certain way yet all they are really doing is keeping this plague at bay

All in all, I believe these Hunters are doing what they think they are doing because it is what they believe, and belief has power. All of these people coming to this voodoo infested Louisiana with a bunch of bounty hunters of living horror stories, these stories will spread and grow out of proportion. How can we trust our own Hunters eyes and mind when he is surrounded by these stories in the middle of the bayou on a daily basis? It causes a lot of bias that I think exists in the game. But will we know for sure? Not until the game or devs tell us:) and even then, who knows

Ifffff you head to the Reddit you will find that @unique frost decoded them all. That text is actually Voynich Script, a codex used as a key for a set of symbols. The rest of the language it Haitian Creole and has been translated as well.

Cow theory - I think that counties are demonic residue after banishing the bounty target. This is then used in some sort of ritual. If the Hunters are truly damned, perhaps the 'bounties' earned can restore their humanity or prevent them from being damned. This is why they are willing to kill opthers in order to save their own souls.

After watching The Patriot (specifically the scene after he fires a couple shots from separate guns and then goes into hand to hand combat after avenging one of his sons)it made me think of how I'd love to see close combat reload times (i.e. Shotguns) increased and melee combat more prevalent. Counter attacks, parrying. Blocking/parrying causing targets to get stunned in SOS is a cool mechanic I'd like to see added in the future. Just a thought. Emote this if you agree and I'll post on the forum. P.S. I know the revelutionary war is probably 140+ years after Hunts estimated timeline. Just wanted to express my thoughts on adding a more intimate melee combat system.

IMO with how the clues look
it looks to me like someone in the town was dabbling with dark forces, got possessed by something and that something let some smaller little demon fellas out
they all start posessing the towns people and animals, further temping more demon fellas to pop outta hell
When the big bad (butcher/spider) is banished and the tokens removed (possibly the thing that draws the demonic creatures?) it starves/deprives the smaller demons of needed energies/leadership, so they all begin to decay.
That's just my take on it, however. 😉
As for the army/feds? IMO it'd make a lot of sense if this secrety society of hunters were a specialized unit of some kind, or at least have some form of political pull.

Its a semi post apocalyptic world. Also the wild west was a land of get even by any means necessary. Alot of people wanted to get rich quick and with no one around to put them in jail (since everyones a zombie) the temptation is never greater
As for who the hunters are they could very well be just hired guns or outlaws who are given the chance of a clean slate if they assist. Of course the government expects them to not survive and maybe other hunters have sneaked into the town as well looting and pillaging what remains

@lofty parrot I do have a theory on the dabbling in dark forces. However that is a small stretch depending on lore sources. But the zombies and the big bosses are just more unique evolutions of these different strains of plague.
