To help resolve your issue, we need to view a log file from a fresh launch of OBS Studio containing an output session. Follow these instructions to upload a clean log file:

  1. Restart OBS Studio first!
  2. Start your stream/recording replicating any issues (meaning having any games/apps open and captured, etc.)
  3. Stop your stream/recording after 30 seconds or after the issue has occurred
  4. Click the Help menu → Log Files → Upload Current Log File
  5. Paste the URL into this Discord channel

Hi there. I'm wondering about getting some advice on my encoder. I have a macbook air 2020 m1 with 8GB RAM.
Yesterday I was streaming to twitch on H264 Hardware Encoder (CBR. 6000 Kbps)
I was also recording on the same encoder (CBR 20000 Kbps)
I also tried to source record (just the game and microphone without overlays) using the source record plugin. Again same encoder (CBR 20000Kbps)

About an hour and a half into my stream OBS crashed. When I got my stream back up and running it was very jumpy until I removed the plugin entirely. I've never had a problem recording and streaming before but i'm wondering if this time I over did it with my encoder. Do you think this is likely? Also is there a different way to record the source without using the plugin?

I'm very new to recording and streaming so apologies if this is all very obvious

#

I also want to note that I have other encoders available but I'm not sure if i should be using more than 1 at a time

forest axle
#

on a base m1, i would not try to use more than one encoder session at a time with the hardware encoder

#

three simultaneous sessions is also pushing it regardless of hardware/software on that system

#

i would recommend using the same encoder session for both your stream and your primary recording (so check 'same as stream'), and then a separate x264 session for source record

tiny coral
#

Ahhh ok. Would you keep the same bitrates as i imagine that also puts pressure on the encoders?

forest axle
#

performance should be fine with reasonable bitrate values. 6k for the stream/main recording is fine. for source record, 20k is fine, though i would probably recommend not using CBR there

#

instead either VBR/ABR or CRF

leaden lily
#

Can someone help me with my recording? when I record and make fast inputs like spam WASD for movement the input will lag, this happens when I type because im a generally fast typer (roblox is the game)

anything that records the screen or does anything related to recording needs to be off and closed while you're running OBS

can you open activity monitor.app (in /applications/utilities), search for "VT" in the top right, then take a screenshot?

forest axle
#

you can search for it in spotlight if you want to. the /applications/utilities folder is where it is on your machine

you need to search for "VT" in the top right of activity monitor now

For some reason, your output resolution is higher than your base resolution

neon lily

I am looking for a person that would help me to setup virtual camera that will match quality of source camera and I am willing to pay for that.
In attached screenshots 1-2 (left - raw stream from an iphone, right - OBS scaled from 4k to fhd) you can see the quality is worse in the OBS system.

For setup I use this: iPhone 15 4k60fps -> ios camera for obs -> obs iOS camera source -> virtual camera -> stream
Additionally I noticed scaled from 4k to fhd gives the best quality(when sources from OBS) than any other: 4k, 2k, fhd, 4k->2k, 2k->fhd.

Will appreciate any help 🙏

P.S. Streaming platform I use allow us to stream only via selecting a camera so I can use either iPhone as camera (screenshot 1) or OBS virtual camera (screenshot 2)

neon lily
#

I'm confused as to how the iPhone even enters this scenario

#

Focus on the main point: you don't think your virtual camera is outputting at the highest quality

full gyro
#

Sorry for confusion, let me add that to the post

neon lily
#

I doubt there's anything to add

#

What is your iPhone camera pointing at?

full gyro
#

At this example I was pointing it at menu on that streaming service

full gyro
neon lily
#

Right

#

What streaming service is this, btw?

full gyro
#

WhatNot

narrow chasm
#

thank you so much it worked...

full gyro
neon lily
#

Right. Now, what's your output resolution in OBS Settings -> Video?

#

I think I asked you this earlier and you told me a bunch of stuff

#

But I just want the actual numbers

full gyro
#

This is what gives the "best" result right now

neon lily
#

1920x1080?

#

I thought WhatNot video was vertical?

full gyro
#

Yes, but I have to feed them 16x9 anyway

#

But that's a nice point to research, never thought about "why" part

neon lily
#

Yeah, that seems odd to me. I gather because the website itself accepts a standard 16:9 webcam image and crops to the middle by itself

full gyro
#

For some reason when I feed them 9x16, right, they try to "scale" it back to 16x9 what results in too much zooming. Let me setup and I will make a screenshot

neon lily
#

Yeah, I believe you.

full gyro
#

Um, maybe there is a way to, um, rotate the output resolution? )

neon lily
#

No, no point

#

If you're streaming through the website, they clearly expect 16:9 video

#

Because that's what standard webcams output

#

I have a feeling the virtual camera only supports 1920x1080 at maximum, anyway

full gyro
#

Oooh 😳

#

I am completely lost then, lol

neon lily
#

So basically, you'll be taking a 3840x2160 image from the camera, rotating it sideways which will effectively turn it into 2160x1215, and then that's getting further downscaled when the whole canvas is downscaled to 1920x1080

#

to an effective resolution of 1080*608

#

So yeah, I would anticipate the picture being blurrier

#

My impression is that they really want you to use their mobile app for full resolution video

full gyro
#

Well, this is an USA company so I was expecting something completely weird from that, but not that much

#

May I ask do you know anything atleast remotely similar to the OBS but with 4k virtual camera?

neon lily
#

No idea

full gyro
#

Or maybe a person who can improve OBS virtual cam so it would support 4k?

neon lily
#

I'm sure if it could support 4K in the first place, it would

#

But even if it did support 4K, you would still see a quality reduction

#

Just by virtue of the fact you're putting a 9:16 image on a 16:9 canvas

#

What do you plan to have on the OBS side that warrants using it to begin with, btw? I thought of an alternative but it might not meet your needs

full gyro
#

Yea, wow, that was hard to accept

#

About needs, I am just looking a way to separate music and mic channels, add some sources with additional information, like amount of teams left or current highest bid

neon lily
#

Oh sure, makes sense. Yeah, what I had in mind would be no use 😄

full gyro
#

With obs I could just plug browser source with 90% of these features, so browser source would be enough for now more than

#

Jeez!

full gyro
neon lily
#

Camo Studio

#

But the only text you can set in it is static

full gyro
#

Oh, yeah, saw it yesterday

neon lily
#

And there's no equivalent to the browser source

full gyro
#

Damn, have no words how this situation sucks

#

But thank you very much for education

neon lily
#

Sorry it didn't work out exactly as you want it. But I wouldn't give up on the situation — remember that most people are watching a live stream on their mobiles, so people may not notice it being a little blurrier anyway :)

#

Depending on their connection, especially 😄

full gyro
#

Ah, this streaming type has so many little text and we want our viewers to be able to read it 😭
But, yeah, you right, usability > quality imo

neon lily
#

Probably just means the text has to be bigger than you planned :D

full gyro
#

Oh, it's that simple 😄

#

Yea, probably will have to move camera closer and move to quality over quantity approach, who knows

the device resolution is irrelevant except for applications which incorrectly use it

full gyro
#

Oh, okay, glad it's possible to do 4k, thanks!

pearl yacht
#

you might run into issues with certain apps though

#

e.g. if you preview the output with quicktime, it will dutifully change to the resolution that you send via OBS

#

e.g. your browser or conferencing software might not be able to handle that and still only look at the device resolution

#

and camera extensions are not supposed to have "physical resolutions" that can be changed because.. they don't have a sensor with a physical resolution 😄

full gyro
#

Yup, thank you for ideas!

pearl yacht

but in general, just set OBS to 4k and macOS will pipe the 4k output through the virtual cam

full gyro

set it to portrait mode, and you'll get portrait mode videos

but if you do a google hangout, it probably won't work

because the webrtc stack in browsers can't handle that

at least the portrait thing, I think it should still get 4k video

full gyro

This was very inspiring! Hope will get be a solution over this issue with all of these tips, lol

full gyro

Figured out that potentially I do something wrong with OBS because when I feed portrait video directly from an iPhone "continuity camera" it works as it should and doesn't scale the video.

Would appreciate any additional idea what else is possible to do within OBS to make the feed "similar" to feed from a mobile

Window is the one that doesn't work properly lol

You'll be wanting Application for best performance atm

neon lily
blissful kindle
#

question? Didnt see it.

neon lily
#

Considering you have exactly one scene/source and are using a preset, I don't think that'll make any difference

#

Ah, I meant to ask: when you say it's laggy, do you mean the video or the whole Mac?

#

i.e. is it making Roblox lag?

blissful kindle
#

just the video, because roblox wasnt lagging, just the video after i pressed stop recording.

neon lily
#

I mean, you only recorded for about 20 seconds

that was for a test

I think that the second-from-top option is a good one, 2880x1800. It's also 16:10 so there'll be bars, but they'll be minimal. It just means that you position the screen capture so it doesn't capture the menu bar

Hello!
It seems like I'm getting lag in OBS, not just the the stream due to a slow network. It also says I'm pinned to 60 fps in the lower right. However, the video still looks laggy in the OBS preview window, which then also looks laggy on stream too.
I've tried lowering my bitrate and that doesn't seem to do anything at all, even if I choose a crazy low value. It also doesn't look like my CPU or GPU is being overwhelmed.

I'm using OBS 30.1.2 on an M1 Macbook Pro, and capturing a PS5 with an Elgato HD60 S+.

Could there be a problem with my capture card? Not a good enough USB cable? Some other setting in OBS I need to adjust? I'm kinda grapsing at straws now. I can provide screenshots and/or a screen recording of what's going on too, if needed.

If anyone has ideas on how to fix it please lmk!

On macOS, some older Elgato capture devices may not be supported or require workarounds to use with OBS Studio:

  • Game Capture HD and HD60 are not compatible with Apple Silicon-based Macs. On Intel-based Macs, use the Elgato Game Capture app in full screen, then capture it with a macOS Screen Capture/Window Capture source
  • HD 60S is not compatible with Apple Silicon-based Macs. On Intel-based Macs, use the OBS Link app
  • HD 60S+, HD 60X, Cam Link are compatible with all Macs and can be captured with a Video Capture source. Make sure you are using a USB 3-compliant USB cable or adapter, connected directly to your Mac if possible

I'm using the card listed in this post as the new one that is compatible. However, USB 3 doesn't seem right. I'm using a USB C cable, and that is the only kind of port even available on the card and the computer. USB C shuld be better anyway.

Do you think it's a problem with the ports on my computer or the usb cables themselves? Why does it only work on one port and with the one cable (and still has the original choppy video issue so not really working)??? Or do you think it is still more likely to be the capture card?

Hello everyone, I stream since 1 month and everything work good. But yesterday when I started streaming, there is a lost of connexion. Anyone have a solution to resolve this ? (sorry for my english)

#

Question: I'm recording a video capture (4k camera) at 25fps with two cameras. One over USB streaming, and one over a 4k capture device. I noticed that it's sometimes choppy and did some tests.
I tested by recording a 50fps video playing on a phone.
With USB streaming, each frame correctly shows an increment of 2 frames.
But with the 4k capture card (Avermedia Live Streamer CAP 4K - BU113), it is not stable. It can increment: 2, 2, 0, 4, 2, 2, 2, 3, 1, 2, 2, 2, etc...
This applies when connected to either camera, so it seems to indicate that the capture card is at fault.
I connected the capture card directly to a Macbook Pro M1.

It seems the repeated frame occurs every ~8 frames, so that's quite frequent...

Is this a problem with the capture card? Is there anything I can configure to synchronize properly?
Does OBS have a way of synchronizing with capture devices? Or does it just scrape the most recent frame?

worthy gale
#

If I record in OBS with 50fps (25fps 4k input), I should see a changed frame every 2 frames. But I sometimes see 3 repeated frames, immediately followed by 3 changing frames. This essentially means that the framerate is not stable at 25fps, but that the frames are served in a way such that the framerate increases and decreases, e.g. 20-30fps with jitter.

#

So I'm thinking that it could also be a problem with the OBS implementation?

Hey there, I’m having an issue with my Elgato 4K X capture card in OBS… I’m trying to capture video from a Lumix Camera. My camera is outputting 1080p 60fps over HDMI, and for some reason in OBS I’m only getting 30fps.

I also have an Elgato CamLink 4K, and that capture card is plug and play 60fps in OBS, so I’m not entirely sure why my Elgato 4K X isn’t.

When I double click the video capture device source in OBS to open its properties, and I uncheck Use Preset box, a Resolution and Frame rate drop down becomes visible, but Frame rate is written in red, and nothing is listed in the drop down beside Simple FPS Values.

Interestingly, the exact same occurs when I go to the properties of the video capture device source that the CamLink 4K. Frame rate is also written in red, and the drop down next to Simple FPS Values is empty.

Does anyone know why my Elgato 4K X isn’t able to capture video at 60 FPS ?

Medium
Low

forest axle
#

hmm. neither 1920x1080 nor high yield 60fps?

stable brook
#

High doesn’t, let me try 1920

#

No, the 1920x1080 setting is 30fps

forest axle
#

gotcha

#

thanks for the info... to me it's unusual that those presets would not end up at 60fps but that's something i'll have to look into

stable brook
#

It’s just so strange because I didn’t have to adjust any of these properties like this with the CamLink 4K capture card, that one was as simple as plug n play.

#

The 4K X which is like Elgato’s highest end capture card did need all this finagling though.

forest axle
#

i believe, after looking a bit, that for some reason presets are fps independent. so at some point, something set your card to 30fps, and from that point, presets all stuck with that value

#

if your card is never set to 30fps, then presets would maintain 60fps

#

as to how that happened originally, could only guess at this point

stable brook
#

Yeah, dunno. Any idea how I might set it to 60 fps instead?

forest axle
#

permanently, no. i would think that setting it to 60fps via the non-preset device properties would do the job

#

if it doesn't, i'm not sure

stable brook
#

welp… it works using these device properties so I’m happy with it

#

I really appreciate your help thanks so much

forest axle
#

no probs!

stable brook
#

Also noticed there’s a slight bit of a color difference between using the preset properties and the non-preset properties

plucky zenith
pearl yacht
#

Presets are somewhat independent from actual resolution and framerate - the latter doesn’t factor in at all (you can’t give a preference) and resolution just tells macOS the size of the samples you want, not what the device runs in

#

Which allows macOS to select res/framerate independently given the combined requirements of all capture sessions on the device (as it can only have one active resolution but multiple apps can ask for different ones)

#

Hence why the capture card source requires you to select a specific combination of resolution, framerate, and colour format to change the device (but which will impact all other sessions)

#

Always keep in mind that CMIO is designed for webcams and their usage scenarios like doing a FaceTime call or recording some typical webcam video - it seems like it’s not designed to handle capture cards well (especially not high resolution and high framerate - it struggles with frame pacing at 4k60)

Hi. I run a small video production company in the UK. I've just enrolled with Apple Business Manager. I notice OBS is one of the apps I'd like to have on my work Macs, but is not available in the Apple Business Manager app store. I have spoken to Apple Business Manager Support and they say for apps not available on the app store, I need to ask the developers to publish the app privately to the app store, specifying our organisation number - which I can supply - which would then make it available for me/my staff. Is there anyone on here who can help or point me in the right direction so I'm asking the right person please?

pearl yacht
#

OBS cannot be published on the App Store as it’s GPL-licensed

#

Whoever would publish it cannot fulfil the contract terms required for publishing as the GPL does not grant those rights to the publisher, last I checked

neon lily
#

Indeed.

full roost
#

Thanks for the response. So how do I roll out OBS to my work devices? And wouldn't publishing it privately for a specific company negate the license terms? Ie - we provide our company number on ABM, OBS published privately to the app store so effectively only we can see it?

#

As you can prob tell, I'm not an IT person, just basing this on what ABM support have told me.

pearl yacht
#

That’s not how it works - when an app is published to the App Store - whether privately or publicly - the publisher gives Apple the rights to distribute that copy of the binary, but the GPL does not allow anyone to grant Apple that right

full roost
#

Ok. Thanks. So is there a 'correct' way to install OBS on ABM devices?

neon lily
#

The same way as installing any app

#

Download it, open the disk image, drag it to the Applications folder

#

😄 sorry, bit glib to say it that way

#

Used to be doable with Apple Configurator

pearl yacht
#

Yeah you probably would have to create a custom profile and allow the bundle ID or something, but I never worked with ABM

full roost
#

Okay, but my understanding of ABM is that I can remotely push apps out to multiple devices. If I'm understanding correctly, for OBS I'd have to go back to installing that app on each device in person, one at a time (as my staff won't have the right to download and instal apps)?

pearl yacht
#

Probably with a script that downloads and installs it or something

#

You need to come up with a custom solution to automate a manual installation effectively

full roost
#

Appreciate the input though.

pearl yacht
#

But, again, I haven’t worked with ABM, so no idea what’s possible - the intended work of providing apps from the App Store is not possible with OBS

neon lily

ABM seems really tailored to just App Store stuff

pearl yacht

Yep, which makes sense for a controlled environment

Must shops I worked for didn’t bother with ABM, but I guess in some cases legal requirements might force you to

This happened several times. If I had a program that I could just plug the virtual camera in as a local feed, it would be fine.

youre hitting overload with the software encoder, which generally just means your computer is under too much load to encode in time. you could try streaming with the hardware encoder, though this may be unreliable on intel, or else lower your specs, perhaps to 1080p30 or 720p60, or else find some other way to reduce the load on your machine while you're streaming (closing other applications, etc)

We recommend using Simple output mode for most streaming and recording needs. While advanced output mode allows for more fine-tuning of options, it does not guarantee better quality; in fact, it often results in lower quality/performance when settings are changed that should not be.

To change back to Simple output mode:

  1. In OBS Studio, click on Settings, then select Output

is there a way to make the Windowed Projector (Preview) window be available in video conference/screensharing apps? For example when I'm on a Slack call, or a Google Meet and I choose which window to target, the Windowed Projector window is never available as a sharing target.

If you are having problems with playing content created by OBS Studio in Movies & TV or QuickTime Player, this is because the media player does not have proper format support. This causes missing video, audio, or for the file to not open at all.

We recommend VLC Media Player for better, accurate format support. Like OBS Studio, VLC Media Player is a free and open source project.

If OBS Studio reports that it does not have system permissions but they do show up in System Preferences/Settings, follow these steps to fully reset permissions for OBS Studio.

  1. Quit OBS Studio and System Preferences/Settings
  2. Open the Terminal app (located in /Applications/Utilities)
  3. Copy-paste this command then press Return: sudo tccutil reset All com.obsproject.obs-studio
  4. Type in your user password then press Return. Nothing will appear on screen while you do this.

Hm, doesn't look that different, to me. The difference would amount to the stream resolution being delivered to the viewer, whatever it is. I'll try to find some info on that.

I have to admit, if I take the two screenshots and make the elements in the picture comparable sizes, the OBS screenshot doesn't look any clearer

#

Or put another way, the stream screenshot doesn't look any blurrier

#

Have you tried asking on the seller Discord?

Well, you haven't given me two identical images to compare so I'm just going with what you've provided. Making the images the same size and lining up the elements, the blurriness looks about the same

#

And yeah, the WhatNot Discord

#

By the way, I'm not doubting you or the people you've shown it to

viscid granite
#

I'll give it a shot. Also this is the 2 identical angles

neon lily
#

It's just that if I can't identify the issue, I can't ably help you to fix it, if you see

#

Are those both screenshots?

#

Those angles aren't identical

viscid granite
#

Both screenshots. Left s preview , right is while on stream

neon lily
#

Again, they're at two different angles. Does the stand or the camera move, or something?

#

They also look as blurry as each other, to me

#

@forest axle maybe your eyes can help me out here

#

The angle shouldn't be changing at all if the stream screenshot is of what OBS is capturing

#

Should be the same output

viscid granite
#

The phone sits on a stand and will move a little

neon lily
#

Ah, not on a tripod? I think that's what I was assuming

viscid granite
#

It's a desk mount. I'm going to get you better photos tomorrow and see if we can find any issues. Thank you once again, have a great night

Good evening

#

when looking at the footage, is there a way to get rid of this on the top?

#

the black bar with that blue circle thing

neon lily
#

You could cover it with a black Color Source

#

Or not use display capture but application capture instead

wicked oriole
#

im using window rn

#

is there like any 3rd party app or something that can cut it out?

neon lily
#

No

wicked oriole
