is there a plugin that toggle sources on/off depending on audio?

You can likely do this by processing audio externally to detect the trigger and using that trigger to toggle sources over websockets

@weak escarp Hey!

We did the first stream trying using Source Record for instant replay.

Despite my 5+ tests throughout the week, and verifications that it worked (despite the hotkey issue), of course on stream day it all fell apart (Isn't that how it always goes?).

It worked to begin with, but over time something strange happened (by time I mean like an hour), that I cannot explain other than trying to describe what I was seeing.

So it appears to me that when you first launch it (NVENC), it would buffer the replay - and when pressing the button to save replay within 1-1½ sec save the replay. Nice!

Now, after some time - my replays would break. It would play the previous replay, and I was so, so confused.

Throughout further investigation; it seems that something was causing the replay to take up to 21 seconds from pressing the button, to actually saving the file (Could tell from checking the size of the clip it was saving). Obviously if you have a script that fires after 2.5-3 sec, it would then play previous file since Source Record hadnt actually saved a new clip then.

This behaviour would go away when opening the source with the filter on; Flicking the eye off, and back on (Resetting the filter).

Unfortunately this also meant re-setting the hotkeys etc because everything unset itself.

Source Record for instant replay is amazing conceptually, but it needs a tiny bit of work more unfortunately before it's truly useful 😦

Sorry for the wall of text, that's my feedback. I realize you're busy irl with other things - if you need me for anything I'm around!

Thanks again,
-Lind

Why am I getting really high cpu usage when I stream using NDI, I got pretty bad hardware granted- but that's the reason I'm using 2 laptops (to offload some of the work)

gaunt zealot
# fathom coyote Why am I getting really high cpu usage when I stream using NDI, I got pretty bad...

Basically all the CPU and GPU load from NDI comes from the underlying NDI libraries from the NewTek guys. The encoding is a mix of CPU and GPU-based compute, so if the hardware you're running it on is low-end enough, you may get some "interesting" behavior. I'd look very carefully at both CPU and GPU usage while the NDI feeds are active.

I'd also watch the network bandwidth too as things like wireless is the land of pain and tears. Also keep in mind that a single 1080p60 NDI video stream is like ~125 Mbps...

#

ight, first im running the "gaming" pc on these specs

That's why you shouldn't even have OBS installed on the gaming PC. Just use NDI Screen Capture that comes with NDI Tools and call it good

vale vine

That's not a "gaming" pc. That's a ultra low power laptop

Also keep in mind that if you overload either your CPU or GPU source-side, your NDI feed itself will start dropping frames

When setting up a browser source there's a parameter titled "Page Permissions" at the bottom, it's a pulldown. The selections in this pulldown are the following.

No access to OBS
Basic access to OBS (Save replay buffer, etc.)
Advanced access to OBS (Change scenes, start/stop replay buffer, etc.)
Full access to OBS (Start/Stop streaming without warning, etc.)

Can I assume the browser source has the ability to control OBS? Is their a working example that demonstrates this capability?

Any time of course LindLove We have the next tourny this weekend so 🙏

Also little side note, I'd been wondering why it happened and now I know giggle. Is it possible in OBS to make hotkeys application only?

I've found that when I'm out of application, and I use shift + v (my hotkey for paste transformation) Source Copy applies and moves sources in my OBS despite it being unintentional.

Just a small thing, not sure if it's an OBS limitation or not.

#

Guys, HI!
How can I show and hide text source automatically with text file updating?

#

Do u know some scripts or smth else?

untold jay
#

@snow dew depends on how much effort you'd like to put into this
it's possible to tell obs-studio to show/hide a source with websockets, but then you'd need to send a websockets command to obs-studio, which can be done from javascript, python or autohotkey if you're proficient with any of these; if the application you're using is capable of launching arbitrary windows .exe files, you can use obscommand to send websockets commands, but this incurs higher delay

#

Is there a way to add a new input source from a program?

#

like how vlc is added as a source?

quiet bramble
#

@hollow hazel Can you give a more specific example? You can capture the output of just about any program with window capture so if that isn't good enough for a given program then the program would need to have some kind of API other software can use, and someone would have to write a custom plugin for that program, which is what the VLC source is.

So I need to compile a custom OBS version that supports my programs API?

quiet bramble

You'd need to write a plugin.

If it's written in C or C++ then you would have to download and build the OBS source code first, to build your plugin against as there is no public SDK.

Thank you! Unfortunately, that's not how I have it in mind, I remember something different. The virtualbg plugin however works...mediocre? :/

harsh topaz
#

@weak escarp Regarding the Source Record plugin, I also ran into another interesting issue. I'm not sure if it's me doing anything wrong here; but the Source Record buffer recording audio sounds like the person is in a tin can. Perhaps it's echoing? Not sure what exactly is going on, but here's two examples. One from Replay Buffer; and one from OBS Recording - of the same input.

The audio I tried on is a browser source, with audio coming through. If I mute said audio (the browser source in Audio Mixer) the clip is muted - which leads me to believe there is only one audio sauce being recorded.

This of course isn't a feature breaking issue unlike the save time/hotkey issues. Just thought I'd report it here 🙂

quiet bramble
#

@vast reef Theree are a variety of apps or plugins for doing background removal out there, all claiming to be a great replacement for using a green screen. "Great" is in the eyes of the beholder though and what one's expectations are set at. I've tried about 4 or so of them and IMHO they're all terrible and unusable, but then again that depends on what one is expecting. They aren't a replacement for green screening IMHO, but they fake it 75-90% ok to some degree. Nvidia Broadcast is probably the best of the bunch I've seen so far (requires an RTX card), and even it isn't that great IMHO.

#

All the solutions I've seen are varying degrees of mediocre, some more on the "medi" side, and others more on the "ocre" side. 🙂

Note to self: Attempting to use Move Transition of a scene item inside of a group is a poor idea, and you were a foolish man for even entertaining the thought.

Back to the drawing board.

quiet bramble
# harsh topaz Note to self: Attempting to use Move Transition of a scene item inside of a grou...

I'd take that up one level and suggest it's a poor idea to use Groups in general. 🙂 They work for certain use limited use cases and a lot of people will use them in a way that they don't notice any problems, but there are so many problems that can occur and cause headaches that I've encountered in the past that once Groups related bugs caused me to lose around 1000 scene scene collection, I stopped using the feature completely. The bug that caused that particular issue got fixed so I feel that my loss resulted in some good... But there are still various other problems that exist that are a headache to deal with. I recommend just using Scene Source with nested scenes and/or StreamFX Source Mirror and/or custom shaders/plugins/scripts or other alternatives depending on the situation. It is a bit more conceptually complex, but much more reliable in my experiences.

#

Granted, I'm probably in the 0.1% of users or 0.01% of users to ever even be likely to encounter some of the issues, but still. 🙂

#

I think I saw someone recently fixed another Groups bug that's been around for a while, so there's progress made over time too.

harsh topaz
#

Yeah I already am. And am aware of the group issues. Thus my statement if being a fool, but I wanted to attempt it. Didn't expect OBS/move transition to flat out crash on attempting it though, but I'm not at all surprised. It's such a shame groups are a dumpster fire, the concept of them are amazing.

Is it possible to make a shader that reads the bounding box size, type, and source size? And crop the excess pixels outside the bounding box (when using "scale to outer bounds)? I'd appreciate some pointers, or if there's such a shader already available.

untold jay
#

@regal breach pixel shaders loaded with streamFX or obs-shaderfilter are filters, and therefore have no concept of sceneitems, all they see is the input source

wild zenith

regal breach
untold jay
#

@regal breach if you want to get sceneitem properties such as size, bounding box type and crop dimensions, that can be done with lua, js or python, plugins can also get it;
want to see the scripting reference?

#

@regal breach now that i mention it, you can write both a shader, and also a helper script that would fetch the values you need and edit your shader's properties accordingly, this would require knowing any of the three languages and also GLSL/HLSL to write the shader itself

#

for example, you could load data/obs-plugins/StreamFX/examples/shaders/source/shadertoy-Xsl3RX.effect from streamFX's "example" shaders, then try to programmatically edit their properties with lua, python or js (you can ask for help with that in #development); if that works, you can then ask for help writing shaders in the streamFX discord (if needed)

#

wait, no, not in #development, but in #scripting

regal breach
#

I see, thanks. Now that I think about it more, I probably need the scene item crop, instead of crop filter, as different scenes will hve the source but different size

#

tbh i've seen the scripting reference already many times before, but I still don't know where to start.

untold jay
#

do you have a shader already?

regal breach
#

i only have the obs shader filter that uses shaders, but not any shader files

#

perhaps a script will do the job, instead of using shaders too

untold jay
#

what was the use case again? you want to scale a source to its outer bounds, and crop everything that goes out of bounds?

#

aka "panscan"?

regal breach
#

yes, though i never heard of a pan scan

untold jay
#

"crop everything that's out of bounds" sounds a lot easier than "learn hlsl and python"

regal breach
#

yep it is exactly what I'm trying to do

#

i know python though

#

obs_sceneitem_set_crop seems to be one of the things i need

#

though I assume i'll have to calculate the excess using the source size too haha

regal breach
#

thanks for your guidance

untold jay
#

i think i might have done it, but i'll need you to verify

regal breach
#

oooh let me see please

untold jay
#

@regal breach is this what you wanted?

regal breach
#

kinda seems like it

#

but to be sure, it does not affect the crop in other scenes?

untold jay
#

i'm not sure if i understood the question
this uses nested scenes, so for all relevant purposes, it's a "source" and can be cropped and scaled and such

#

you need 2 scenes:
scene 1: add your problematic source, set bounding box type to "scale to outer bounds", scale it as needed
scene 2: add "scene 1" as a source

#

if you want to crop unwanted parts of the nested scene, you can use either a "crop/pad" filter, or a sceneitem transform, both will work

regal breach
#

while that can certainly work, for most of my use case, I don't think it will. say for example I have a window capture with 16:9. on one scene i'll resize it to 4:3, on another, some random non-standard aspect ratio. from what I understood with that setup, you need to setup your aspect ratio in scene 1

untold jay
#

@regal breach streamfx source mirrors seem to follow resizes, so you can have multiple resize dimensions set up

#

you can repeat this setup multiple times with different crop dimensions, not sure if streamFX source mirrors would be necessary for this, but they might be

regal breach
#

it seems like I still have to manually crop the excess pixels though

untold jay
#

let me check that..

regal breach
#

I'm looking to just dynamically/automatically do it. for many sources. something like an extra bounding box type "crop and scale to outer bounds"

untold jay
#

is that even possible automatically?

regal breach
#

the easiest would probably make it a feature in obs, but it doesn't seem to be popular among people.

I'm not sure if a plugin can add a new type of bounding box type, but I'm thinking a filter on scenes (so scene item transform is discoverable and that different scenes will have different crop values for the same source), where I can select a specific source. it will then monitor its transform and change the crop values accordingly.

#

not really sure since I haven't made an obs plugin yet.

untold jay
#

i think it would be best to ask in #development if such a plugin would be possible, sceneitems are part of "core" obs-studio functionality, you'll probably have to edit the source code that's responsible for dealing with sceneitems, and PR or fork it

regal breach
#

okay, thanks for the help so far (source mirror is really interesting as I've been looking for such a way without resorting to nested scenes, like simply having the same source with a different name)

# sudden surge Hoping someone can help.. Have recently been trying to move to solely using Asio...
  1. Install VB-Audio CABLE. (A reboot is not required)
  2. In OBS Studio, go to Settings > Audio and select "CABLE Input" as your Monitoring Device
  3. Go to Edit > Advanced Audio Properties and enable Audio Monitoring for the audio sources you'd like to stream to Discord.
  4. In Discord, in Voice & Video settings, select "CABLE Output" instead of your microphone under "Input device".

Now anything you monitor in OBS Studio will be streamed to Discord. Similar steps will work with other conferencing apps, such as Microsoft Teams or Slack.

@hollow stirrup Did some more testing this morning using my webcam instead of the PTZ for testing. I'm seeing other problems with the PTZ filter.

#

First, I couldn't get the PTZ filter to do any detection unless I also had a non-PTZ filter active on another scene

And second, when I could get it to work it took a long time to find a face. Much longer than the non-PTZ version

# regal breach is that plugin already stable? i saw some reviews on it in the forums saying the...

It's listed as a "beta" so I'd assume it isn't a stable "release" per se. I can say one thing about audio in general on Windows at least though. For general end user typical desktop stuff it is fairly simple and works great. For professional audio it is more complex and may require someone to have a much deeper understanding of a lot more aspects of how digital audio works, and how to configure it end to end, from within sound properties of the device through anything it is routed to all the way to the final app, knowing various caveats along the way, as well as things like buffer sizes, APIs etc. The average computer user doesn't know all of that, and even many musicians and semi-pros may not know all of it.

#

As such, it is easy for people to get mismatched sample rates at the device level, audio routing level, application level or some other place.

#

I've heard people swear how terrible Voicemeeter is, including people well versed in audio, but if anyone is patient enough to let someone investigate it for them and help them, usually the problem is they have either not configured something (that they never knew they were supposed to), or something is misconfigured or mismatched.

#

In the last 30 days alone I've had people complain about Voicemeeter "robot voice... blah, I don't want to use that garbage program it never works"... and all it turned out to be was they had their sample rates configured to 44100 in Windows, and 48000 in Voicemeeter causing a mismatch

#

Change to make the sample rates match, problem permanently gone.

regal breach
quiet bramble
#

I mention all of this only because this will happen with any pro audio level app, routing app etc. whether it is stable, beta, or a partridge in a pear tree. 🙂

#

Another issue that will bite end users unfamiliar with it, is driver exclusive access mode either on playback or recording devices.

#

I've helped a number of people who lost their audio and couldn't get it back. It's just slowly and patiently going through every setting in Windows, the apps they're using, the app preferences, etc. to figure out how everything is wired and configured, like Sherlock Holmes. In almost all cases, it's just a matter of reconfiguring a few misconfigured settings.

#

Either disabling exclusive access at the OS level, or in the given app (a DAW for example)

#

How do people learn this? More or less everyone learns it by swinging on a rope hanging off a tree into a rock cliff face 10 times.

#

🙂

#

Audio is complex, and hard to learn, and even when you understand it all fairly well it still can make you lose your marbles.

regal breach
#

hahaha exactly why I am reluctant to refer people to using the voicemeeter app (though the extra cables are nice)

quiet bramble
#

Same thing with ASIO4ALL too... heard people diss that to no end... all it is mostly is a wrapper around WDM IIRC.

#

Any probs are usually misconfiguration, and not really a bug in the software.

#

I think the bigger problem is that more and more people are doing things on their computer as general end users that would generally be considered pro area stuff, but without the knowledge, and it is frustrating to run into walls due to that.

#

Imagine computers that don't need audio to be configured at all ever... 🙂

#

Someone needs to use some of that mad tensor core machine learning stuff to auto-configure audio, with a laser brain interface.

#

So long as they don't make the chips so powerful that they become self aware we should be ok.

#

Hi meteo, thanks for your enthusiasm but after discussing it, we don't think that a third party plugin manager is something we want to promote. There are security concerns as well as user welfare concerns that we have with such a product, and when we release our own plugin manager we want to be sure that we work directly with and maintain a relationship with plugin developers rather than scrape the forum without their consent. We won't be approving your plugin manager at this time or allowing it to be promoted on official OBS websites.

What is the difference between "Network" and "Source Timing" in NDI sync mode?

inner marsh
#

is there any plugin for obs that makes a popup after you finish recording to name the recording?

quiet bramble
#

Don't think so... OBS has to create the file while it is recording so it has to have a filename to use to write the file out to. I'm not sure whether there would be a way to do that or not but it'd probably involve a plugin using the API to find out if a recording is in progress, with a callback for recording stopping, but then it probably has to wait for the file to be finalized. Then there is also the matter of auto-remuxing feature to contend with.

#

And that has an auto-delete original file optional feature as well.

#

One could write a script in python, powershell or some other language to monitor the OBS recordings directory and monitor for new files showing up, but I think it'd have to wait until they are no longer in use first to avoid risk of problems. Seems race conditionish too.

$3k sounds pretty cheap IMHO.

#

If someone wanted to develop something like that as a volunteer in their spare time for fun or something, it'd either already be available or they'd be working on it already I imagine, not waiting for any other reason than they want to do it and have the time and requisite knowledge etc.

#

If someone is going to do it instead with monetary incentive, they also have to have the requisite knowledge and skills and if they do, they could be employed somewhere making $5-10k or more per month at some tech company.

#

$3k is not a lot of money really, 1-2 months rent/expenses for many people. Something like VST support is probably not something someone could crack out in an afternoon but more likely something someone spends several weeks of long hours working on. $3k would possibly be "acceptable" for an engineer to do that.

#

$3000 is 5 weeks worth of 40 hour work days at $15 minimum wage, 2.5 weeks of work at $30/hr (below entry level engineer IMHO), or 1.5 40hr work weeks at $50/hr

#

So purely from a "incentivized purely by money to do a job", $3k is a bargain. 🙂

quiet bramble
#

In Ontario where I live, minimum wage is moving to $15CAD/hr in January from the looks of it. That's approximately $12USD/hr. Having said that, I can't see anyone who has the knowledge and skills to develop software of the nature above to be willing to do it for US or CA minimum wage. If they have the skills to do that kind of software development they most likely wouldn't be working for anyone for minimum wage by a long shot. 🙂

#

Any junior to senior software engineers here that would be willing to work for $9-15/hr doing software engineering? <crickets>

#

😛

#

Honestly, to create VST3 support and have platform parity across Windows/Mac/Linux on x86_64, x86, M1, and have adequate testing and maintenance of the feature I'd predict something more like $15-30k or more to be more reasonable target for someone to consider doing it.

After a couple of mistakes I've made it my mission to try and add a "currently active scene" marker - I'm a backend web developer with no real experience with C and I'm having trouble locating where exactly the scene list is generated. If anyone could point me to the correct file where I can fiddle with the function that generates the Scene list that would be really helpful.

#

The uses of the scene list widget can be found by searching for ui->scenes

#

The Scenes list widget itself is implemented in UI/scene-tree.cpp which is where you'd need to add a graphic element for showing the active scene

#

And it inherits from the stock Qt QListWidget, so you can look at the Qt documentation. Just google search for QListWidget

#

is there a plugin yall recommend to eq in obs

quiet bramble
#

@copper spear Sure, the ReaEq plugin from the free ReaPlugs VST plugins package from Cockos, the company that makes the Reaper DAW. Be sure when you install the plugins to install them to: C:\Program Files\VstPlugins\ReaPlugs or OBS may not be able to locate them. The installation of ReaPlugs may default to other locations. On my system for example it defaulted to trying to install the VSTs into Cakewalk, even though I actually have Reaper also installed. 🙂

#

OBS looks in several locations for VSTs, but the best location is probably under C:\Program Files\VstPlugins\ for a general location, as most programs will check this location.

#

Any other free or paid VST 1.x/2.x plugin should work as well, as long as it is the same bitness as your OBS install (32 or 64 bit)

hi Matty, we have corrected our actions, and from the bottom of our hearts, my colleagues and I are sorry for the trouble we caused the other day, we're sorry for the self-promotion, shill accounts, it's not the right way to find testers. I know we got off on the wrong foot, but we are doing everything we can to earn your trust and prove that our team are very passionate about making games and tools for content creators. We don't intend to monetize the plugin manager in any way, and since our tool is open source now, anyone can inspect it, we want to be totally transparent. (and for my colleagues, many of them are from different countries, so there are different rules and cultures, and we were too eager to show our work of love, so hope you and the community can understand and forgive us and give us a chance to prove ourself.)

is there a way to make it so I can change the text sources content easier with Google Sheets?

#

I know you can like have each text source to a dedicated spot on Google Sheets, but that seems to be only useful for changing by typing. I need a way to just like click a row and it changes the sources at the same time instead of me typing it out if that makes sense

strong tulip
#

Assuming you already have the text sources hooked up to Google Sheets (however you managed that), that's less of an OBS thing and more of a Google Sheets automation thing

mortal harbor
untold jay
#

@mortal harbor crash blames panman.dll or obs-vst.dll, check your VST2 plugins

mortal harbor
fast fjord
#

anything? or am I gonna just have to do 500 text sources

strong tulip
#

Huh?

#

You said

I know you can like have each text source to a dedicated spot on Google Sheets

#

So I assumed you had done that (somehow; no idea how)

#

If that were the case, I would've assumed you'd just hook the question and answer text sources up to four cells whose values can be read in from other cells

#

But if that's not the case, then you'd probably have to do a bit of coding to modify your text sources on the fly — though I wouldn't read in from a source like Google Sheets, I'd rather just a JSON file or something

#

If you have a bit of programming knowledge, Kruiz Control might be the way to go @fast fjord

fast fjord
#

I have 0 coding knowledge lol

#

and the videos on youtube do allow you to use google sheets (or I guess excel...) to read from a file

#

the only problem is, the individual cell itself can change the text source value

#

that would mean I'd have to retype every question and answer, instead of just pressing a button (or selecting a different row) that provides a new set of information on the same text files on OBS

strong tulip
#

I'd be interested to see these YouTube videos on how to hook a text source up to a spreadsheet

#

Could you share a link to me?

fast fjord
#

Excel Sheet to OBS - Update Real-Time Score to your Game

#

that uses Microsoft Excel

#

but for that purpose it is just for changing numbers (aka a scoreboard)

strong tulip
#

Right, this looks easily done

fast fjord
#

so you can just easily re-type your number source on another monitor or something to change the OBS Feed. But that's not what I want

strong tulip
#

Nah

fast fjord
#

I feel it'd be more problematic to re-type 4 things (or even just copying and pasting it is still bad imo), than having 500 text sources

strong tulip
#

You wouldn't edit the cells directly, you'd edit other cells and have the visible ones update based on their content.

Or, what I'm thinking, you would edit 1 cell to pull the questions in from other cells.

#

So give me a few mins to try it out

fast fjord
#

my current idea (since I have 0 coding knowledge) is to have 4 text sources and group them up which is the annoying af way, but I can AT LEAST use stream deck to hide / show a specific question row

#

but I'd prefer to just click down on like the next row or column of google sheets so it changes all 4 at the same time for me

strong tulip
strong tulip
#

So you can see I have a sheet with the questions on it and a sheet with the actual quiz to display on OBS (like the video you linked me)

#

And just using a couple of Excel functions, I make it so that the display cells (the ones to capture into OBS) change values based on a number

#

So then the only thing you need to change is the number

fast fjord
#

O_o

#

ok so

#

I guess follow the video I linked you, and use the Excel Functions and it'll work?

strong tulip
#

Basically. So they don't actually hook any text sources up to the spreadsheet, they just do window capture — so you would just format the quiz cells the way you want

#

And all your questions go into the Questions sheet

fast fjord
#

I'll have to experiment with that when I get the chance, I didn't expect a response so fast, but since it's for school I'll try to figure it out

#

thanks for it

strong tulip
#

The formulae should work fine in Sheets, too. Though I don't use Sheets, I just use Excel.

#

Yep, tested it. Works beautifully in Sheets. 👍

#

Which means you could even have a different window/device open to change the number, independent from the one you use for window capture

Hello, everyone! A plugin that I have submitted has just been accepted, and now my next step is to make it available for Windows (it's only available for Linux now). Do you know any interesting sources to check in order to build my plugin for Windows? Thank you!

hey everyone, does anyone know if there's a plugin that plays a sound when the replay buffer saves a clip?

@pulsar wigeon if you really want that, you can add a media source, enable monitoring for it (edit > advanced audio properties), then go to settings>hotkeys and set the same hotkey as your save replay buffer hotkey to play it

have i done something wrong?

@pulsar wigeon and what hotkey did you set?
