h264 is very nice still. easy to decode. If your workflow has known hw decode for HEVC, than you could make the case for that, with slightly better quality per bitrate (your recordings could be a bit smaller).

We use it for private comms and transfering video game recordings for video edits mostly. We used to use Google Drive and Wetransfer but they were too much hassle. We found this to work much better, and was less hassle than setting up a DAV server or some other solution like ftp or whatever.

Easier to manage than a centralized server and managing passwords etc. too.

I also want to try out Peertube in the future, but that's more to set up. There was some open source federated streaming webapp too but I forget the name of it.

Its one weakness, is needing to have port forwarding set up on everyone's router properly. Too many people out there are not familiar with that. It supports uPnP and I think NAT-PMP too but those are both insecure and usually disabled by default on routers because of that.

However it also supports IPv6, so if everyone in a circle has a good v6 enabled ISP, that issue is moot.

People keep being against YouTube for streaming but in my experience its actually fairly good

The only problem I have with it is it just dropping my stream after about 20 minutes (my upload rate goes to like 200kbps with a shit ton of dropped frames), but I blame my ISP lol

“Live streams specifically” don’t exist in a vacuum. Discovery for twitch streams has virtually always been word of mouth or making other forms of content and pointing back to your stream
YouTube is no exception

I regularly use either the front page of twitch, or a specific category or game title to find a stream on twitch.

On YouTube, I can count on one hand the number of times my front page has even notified me there is a livestream from a channel I'm subscribed to going, let alone being able to discover live streams with content I might find interesting.

You click on the live tab and a good 60-70% of the "live" videos in that category are live streams that have already ended, and there's no way to further filter by category, game, topic, etc.

So, respectfully, the experience as a viewer is much, much worse for discoverability on YouTube.

The old YouTube Gaming landing page was a huge step in the right direction, and was almost functional for that kind of thing but they killed it for some reason.

YouTube is still very much designed around planning and scheduled content, not organic discovery.

I'm talking exclusively about live content. As much as we like to meme about The Algorithm™, I have had a ton of content recommended to me on YouTube for regular uploads that lead to a subscription and continued viewership of that channel.

For non-live content, YouTube for a viewer does a pretty good job in my experience.

For live content, it's absolutely atrocious.

If they did that, then they'd have people divided between their live stream and their video, which would either hurt the live stream, or give the video a hard start, in my opinion

If you wanted to you could upload a video, and then while that one's uploading you could upload another, but both won't upload at the same time, one will basically be waiting in a queue, or take a longer time to process and prepare itself while the other one is already doing what it's doing

I remember this while testing the way YouTube initially uploads videos, how they do it in a standard quality and then do it in an HD quality after it's fully been processed

Some advice I can give with military training. Take whatever you can get. Even the crappy jobs. People won't want to do them cause they feel it's not worth the time, too mundane or too hard / complex. It gives you more experience with more things and honestly pays off in the end. 🙂

One of the things I think about when things get crazy at work. I made it through multiple combat tours. Whatever they throw at me at work now doesn't come close to that level 🙂
