(I shit you not, fundamentally this is a definition of every scientific process)

The question is : if you know roughly how inaccurate each of the data is (its uncertainty) can you calculate how inaccurate the results are (propagate them).

(to be fully outfront, this explanation is only valid in principle for frequentist conceptions, not bayesian ones, but it's roughly the same thing for bayesian, only the epistemological meaning of what you're calculating is the main difference in this specific case)

if I take a physical measurement of something, it's always going to have some amount of uncertainty. if I then use that in a model, that uncertainty changes based on how you're doing the math. it's surprisingly easy to run into really weird situations if you don't pay attention to that, like errors magnifying through methods of calculation. one that I remember from numcomp is solving PDEs using the forward difference method
