Im gonna uhh tell you a real quick fact, unless you want to shift things to make this a actual thing, plutonium is not common enough to be its own mining system
if anything plutonium is ridiciously rare that we typically make them in the labs than finding them naturally (so its more of a synthetic element)
However you can make the mine to be a uranium or thorium extraction sites like LC and those element can be processed later to be plutoniums
that's a "quick" factπ

I think it should explode (not like the normal meltdown) running out of fuel is not fun. I think these rare event should be enjoyable and rewarding.
That would be an idea for an other event
adding some stuff that happen will (in my opinion) give an enjoyable Experience since it would be that boring, maybe having to repair some reactor components or refuel the core or even try to make safety tests we will see what I can arrange

@pastel tapir Put fuel rods in the middle of this control panel with a lever that can range insertion from 25% - 100%, 0% is an option but is only at that level by default before startup

The core runs with a glass lenses and Panels which regulate the Combustion

then neutralizer rods are inserted DIRECTLY into the combustion chamber
to help regulate the combustion itself
their tips are made of a solidified chemical which can terminate plutonium reactions, helping manage the combustion itself
considering the amount of plutonium directly injected into the reactor, it doesnt completely neutralize it but instead just keeps it from overpowering and busting the containment apart

A chain reaction caused by uranium 235 being lit by a powderkeg, which slides into a frictionless chemical causing a chain reaction to suppress the plutonium reaction
said reaction is controlled via fuel rods, which are inserted at different ratios
without the rods though
it is possible then that energy outflow could simply be managed via said lever
or abandon the concept entirely
this feels like i am pitching this to you at a meeting

Basically:
Concept 1: Neutralizer Rods (abandoned)
Concept 2: Counter-reaction
Concept 3: Abandon said idea alltogether

So what you could do is supercapacitors for the reactor, basically storing left-over energy and discharging it into the power lasers, basically big recycling machines lol

im particularly talking about this bit
how meltdown could work:
Phase 1: Ominous music as the reactor begins to blow off steam from the vacuum fan and an announcement states that the reactor is entering a meltdown phase. The reactor slowly creaks as the power lasers become visibly unstable.
Shutdown phase: Players must go to the auxiliary control room behind the reactor chamber and turn on the fuel drain, as the power lasers cut off and fuel begins to pour out from the side of the power lasers. This will result in 2 possible things:
Shutdown success, where the power lasers are drained of fuel and the reactor cools down. The vacuum fan activates and the reactor calms down before the game restarts.
Shutdown failure, where the reactor has gotten too hot and the fuel ignites, setting the reactor chamber on fire and burning anyone in the chamber. (this is not the power lasers exploding, this is the fuel igniting.)
Phase 2: The reactor confinement begins visibly heating up, becoming red hot. CU. 2 explodes and the breaker in the control room breaks as a large electrical spark causes the handle to go flying off. The lights flicker and turn off, before the whole facility is illuminated in red when the emergency lights turn on. Turbines 1 and 2 both explode from steam pressure, and the facility begins falling apart. Eventually the whole reactor confinement bursts apart, destroying the reactor chamber and control room. Eventually the highly reactive plutonium fuel and the ball of energy inside the reactor is exposed to oxygen, causing the fuel to ignite again and flare up, destroying the whole facility in an uncontrollable explosion.

Instead of the turbines detonating you could also have a steam line rupture drain the cooling loop over time
Fuel Cartridge idea:
How fuel could work is Fuel Cartridges. Medium-sized, square cartridges about the size of a router. Inside is a solid brown substance which is the fuel. These cartridges are inserted into slots in the power lasers during refueling which during operation it works like a hot glue gun, pushing the solid material forward and melting it in a heating chamber before it melts into a liquid, then combining with a uranium material to create a massive chain reaction, the energy of which is absorbed and shot out of the power lasers into the reactor. The fuel is highly flammable, hence why it caught on fire during the meltdown during the fuel ejection. 4 cartridges are inserted into 1 power laser. Since theres 2 power lasers, that means 8 cartridges are needed for typical operation. Cartridges are made in a factory in the facility where you can select a fuel potency (which increases the chances of the fuel becoming a lighter brown (reactive) or a dark brown/black color (effective). The process isn't seen, you just hear the machine clunk as it dispenses a cartridge. This factory isn't very far from the airlock to the reactor chamber. It would be a pain having to carry 8 cartridges all the way across the facility.
This substance is made of a redacted material, made of multiple natural elements compressed together and combined with basic car diesel. Yes, the fuel was discovered by combining the basic formula for normal car diesel with multiple natural minerals (including uranium). Then it gets solidified and put into a cartridge which is inserted into the power laser.
