substance is like equally confusing to me

well as an example, let's start with this bevel detail
you can see that it's basically two levels of depth, so if it helps you can go to whatever software choice you have and make an outline of each of the levels
Then you just use whatever method you prefer to signify that depth difference, mind that since PBR is 2D any difference in depth must be at an angle, you can't just make a 90ΒΊ tangent as the sides won't have any texture to them; I used Photoshop's Bevel & Emboss effect
And with that done you just got yourself an albedo map, doesn't need to be the final one you'd use but it's a useful one for whatever method you prefer to create the rest of the PBR, I usually use a free software called Materialize
as you can see it just took me like, 10 minutes to do that
the key is to identify things you think you can sacrifice the 3D detail and retain it in 2D

Things that hindered progress:
- Portal 2 itself didn't work
- Bee2 was outdated
- Bee2 caused strange compiling issues (added in extra cameras on the floor???)
- Hammer++ crashed midway through making the 2nd map (that's why it looks kinda ugly)
- Portal 2 forces the player to start with a portal gun (unless stated otherwise in some random file - this took a while to find out)
- The way teleportation works is wacky and I had to hack the start of the 2nd map to even make the player teleport to the right place
- For some reason the Bee2/Puzz compiled version builds the chamber and the entrance/exits separately (they connect through linked_doors). Another reason for confusion
- Had to config Hammer++ again since idk what happened

you should use GMS for portal 2 synth thing
fl studio GMS plugin
i use these settings and i control the modulation with a fruity peak controller and make it a sinewave
to get that phaser sound
shade smooth and then auto smooth it
and try to keep the level of detail the same throughout
like the top part is rounder (more vertices) then the outer part

I figured it would've made more sense than using a graviational laser since the company that made this thing hadn't figured the science out yet, so the infrastructure for a laser is there but they're using a hoist while they haven't gotten the laser to work yet

In an earlier version, every laser would've had a catwalk on the truss structure for workers to inspect things and/or as an access point for repairs, which is why the big yellow-ish shields are there

it varies wildly, but anything from 0.2x0.8 to 0.05x0.2 works for smaller machines and such
the image has a 1:4 ratio so you can use that for calculating sizes
