Honestly? Get a degree in cs, computer engineering, maybe ee or math
You don't have to do that, definitely; you have the other things you want to do. And you don't need it to be a software engineer. But it makes it much harder to get into FAANGs without job experience, which is the specific thing you're talking about. You could get into them a few years down the line, and you can get into other companies in the earlier times.
