#Not sure if SWE is in my future

Hey guys, entering my final year as an engineering student this September. Currently I am doing a SWE internship this summer and I'm not really enjoying the work too much. I've been mulling over my career choices and I'm considering a pivot into PM work... it sounds more like my type of thing.

I really don't enjoy the grind of coding too much, and I just find SWE work so taxing and grindy, from the interview process (spamming leetcode) all the way to the work (spending hours on a bug or PR).

I have a feeling that PM work might be more for me, in school I enjoyed the design decision making of projects and managing parts of the project/product. It also enables me to talk and collaborate with different teams/people.

But on my resume I only have SWE related internships. Has anyone had experience graduating with just SWE and going into a full time PM/consulting role, or something similar?

TIA

There are people who have, but keep in mind it's an entirely different job and so you'll need to catch up on all the things you haven't been trained for.

I would be cautious about drawing conclusions about the field based on one internship; things can be quite different at different companies. You're also still going to have to spend hours on tasks as a product or project manager. That being said, it is good to be evaluating whether you enjoy the work. Schedule some time with a couple PMs at your company and talk to them about what their days look like, how they got there, the good and the bad.

If you find yourself wanting aspects of that work, it will become available as an option once you're a few years in to software engineering.

I hear that it's largely non technical relative to SWE, and with technical understanding a pivot is easy
