#Are there many remote embedded, low-level, andor hardware dev. jobs? Ideal job for me?

I’m doing ok with game dev, but I really enjoy embedded, low-level, OS, and/or hardware work but don’t think there are likely many out there that are remote. Which would make sense, especially in the case of hardware.

I love being remote and value it enough to turn down roles that aren’t. I’m not new grad anymore but not a senior dev, so I can see that also making it hard to find. That said, what could I do to be a stronger candidate then? Where would those remote jobs be?

In a perfect situation, I’d be somewhere doing something that let’s me use Linux (preferably Gentoo but really don’t see that ever happening), programming in C (gaming let’s me use C++ but I don’t like it at all as much as C. Rust is ok), salaried, and be remote

I can spend hours just fiddling with and setting up Gentoo Linux,. I had a lot of fun making a game engine in C but I kind of doubt it’d go anywhere. Godot is a nice engine but I find my self distracted but think it’s because I’m forcing myself to do tutorials.

I’ve been struggling to be happy, but a lot of those things I feel like are outside of my career but not as controllable. Work is so much of our lives and I don’t want to be miserable. I’ve been lied to so many times about what work I would actually be doing, it usually turns into web dev, and I now can’t stand it.

I have an idea for a game, an app, and maybe some Linux stuff but not really in the embedded area.

#

I think another problem is I burn myself out because I’m always trying to do everything

#

I ultimately want to either have a company of my own or be a leader in another.

#

I know I jumped around a lot but low level stuff always has been nagging at me. Gaming I like because it lets me combine creative interests too

Well, you might of mentioned it before so apologies if I forgot, but I guess just a basic title, how/where you found it, and maybe what the interview was like?

#

Title of the job and role

#

Or at least, what did it involve?

signal sierra
#

my title was "embedded software engineer"

#

i looked on linkedin

#

and i just searched for "C++" , "C" , "embedded" "operating systems"

#

what did it involve? we worked on the operating system for our custom devices, it involved things like adding different features to the OS, flew to some customer sites to see how our devices were working in the field (often had to handle OS level networking issues because these devices were in hospitals and they suck for networking)

#

it was chill

#

all C++17

#

wrote a good amount of bash scripts as well

#

company went public while I was there

#

i left after about 14 months

#

got paid 85k a year with like a 5% bonus i think ( i didnt get the full bonus because i wasnt there for a full calendar year)

#

what was the interview like? I think i had an HR screen, then talked with my future boss, then a take home, then a full day of interviews that mostly consisted of technical conversation, talking about my projects then a code review of my assignment
