When you apply for a job and they ask for wanted salary what do you put ? Do you go a little higher over your expectations, do you put something lower to get a better shot, do you pick depending on the location (what if it is remote). Any insight?

You try not to name a number at all if you can help it

At this point, I am looking for an exciting project, and would like to understand more about this opportunity before discussing salary.

I agree with the above, can also ask "what range do you guys have in mind for the role" and then if you agree you can clarify that you're ok to continue given that info

#

or you can just say you checked the range on the posting and applied with the understanding that's the range

#

but yeah as a junior/early career they'll probably push pretty hard for you to give at least something

#

and oftentimes on forms they also force you

#

so in those cases I usually do research on the company, check what they would normally pay, then restate that range or number in that range
if there's no info I just do my best estimate of that given the info that I do have

#

if I'm just mass applying and I'm not that invested in the application/company then I just put a wide range around my target salary

#

really, they key is that if it's the application phase or early interview phase you just don't want to give a number so far off that they just disqualify you

#

it's not even that far out of the question to change your number or range later by a little

There's lots of info out there about this, but I recommend watching the levels fyi founder, he has some videos where he does a mock salary negotiation. It's helpful if you know what to do but not exactly how to put it in words

#

It'll be awkward but holding out on naming a number works out best because it keeps leverage on your side

This is just the application phase so the main goal is don't get disqualified by putting out a range that's highly different from theirs
And then as a secondary goal don't let them lowball you

#

But yeah legit you can just change your range later on accordingly

#

Like sure they can be like "b-but you said" and then you explain circumstances have changed or whatever

#

If you were chosen cuz you're cheap they might be cheesed but personally I would never want to be hired because I'm the cheaper alternative

If you make more than what they have shown on LinkedIn feel free to say what you make to prevent a lowball

Generally you should try to familiarize yourself with the compensation in the market for your area based on YOE
