our team is mostly hardware people, we only have a few software engineers. Lately I've been asked to go to the lab and work on things like designing and building mounts and assemble hardware (PCs). The mounts are somewhat related to what I work on, but still really out my wheelhouse. I understand I should know how to build a PC as a SWE but I feel like none of this is in my job description. All of it feels like a huge red flag and just want to confirm if I'm crazy or not.

Just to be clear

#

You don’t have to know how to build a PC

#

not sure where you got that

#

But also doing new things at a job is pretty normal

#

I hope that’s clear

Is assembling hardware normal? No.
But is doing things that weren't originally on your job description normal? Yes, in small companies.

It's also ok to say that you don't want to be doing that, and if it's what the business needs from you then consider it a mismatch and leave
