#Should I negotiate my raise in my upcoming performance review if so how?

I've been at this company for a year and this is my first time I get a performance review. The manager told me beforehand in our one-on-one not to expect more than 1-3% annual raises. He said it also dependent on an individuals performance and emphasised that the big raises are mostly in the promotional packages.

With the above information, what should I do? If he gives me 3% can I ask him if it's possible to bump it to 5% because of "inflation" or because this is my expectation?

The thing is I don't know what leverage to use, I am not a high achiever.

You use objective measures about your performance and what you brought to the table to decide what you should be worth

#

You don’t bring outside factors that a business doenst bring into consideration (inflation, politics, etc.)

#

You literally said yourself in this post “I’m not a high achiever” so then you probably don’t have any leverage and that is exactly my point @glad rain

#

Hope that’s clear

I see what you mean, the thing is I need to be sure if I can define myself as such, meaning that i was giving a self evaluation form of which i was giving the option to choose a rate like wether I am a "acheiver, exceeded, highly exceeded", the thing is I am not sure if I am "exceeded" so I'll chose "acheiver" to explain this further, I just commit to my task, participate and help others. But that is what I am expected of me in any company, so I don't how to define myself above this

#

in our one-on-one I was told I am a good problem solver and do clean work

#

how can I measure what I am worth?

And generally speaking, you should be in constant talks with your boss about your performance and your goals

#

So that they can help you get the raise, promotion, whatever that you are looking for

#

To me it sounds like you guys already had this conversation recently and were told what to expect

#

It seems a bit odd to decide at the very end , when reviews are happening, that you want to reach for a new goal all the sudden

valid garnet
#

New to your boss (unless I misunderstood your timeline it sounded like you never brought this up to them)

glad rain
#

but I don't know what their raises are like, he just gave me a general idea

valid garnet
#

But then you do know what their raises are like right ? Because they said 1-3%

#

Im not saying you couldn’t go higher

#

Im saying it is hard to suddenly go higher

#

It would be different if you spent the last 6 months communicating “im reaching for this goal how can I get there” and then you worked towards that

#

But that doesn’t seem to be what you’re saying

glad rain
#

You're saying I should've had a conversation with my manager about what I need to do to reach a high raise?

valid garnet
#

?

#

100%

#

That’s literally your boss

#

That is apart of their job

#

To help you reach your goals

glad rain
#

weird, I never thought about it this way, I mean I thought it's his job to decided what I am worth

valid garnet
#

The job of someone who has reports is to help them feel empowered, like they are getting what they want out of their work , keep them happy, yadda yadda

glad rain
#

So can I mention in my new goals what I need to do to be promoted as Software Engineer II? Currently I'm SWE I

valid garnet
#

Because then , in theory , they won’t leave

valid garnet
#

That’s literally your boss LMAO

#

I’m only laughing cause like , I wonder how you would get promoted or go anywhere if the person who you report to doesn’t even know that is what you want

#

Communication with your boss is important

glad rain
#

because I thought promotion happen in a sense of merit

#

like a gift for high performance

valid garnet
#

It is based on “merit” as in is usually performance and hopefully objective

#

But it doesn’t happen out of know where

#

And it isn’t a “gift” in any sense of the word

#

Its something you earn

#

But you literally have to talk to your boss about what you want for this go anywhere

#

They can help you reach your goals

#

Again, that is literally apart of their job, people management

#

Just like he communicated clearly to you what to expect for a raise

#

It is your job to clearly communicate what you want and how to get there
